Katey Sagal & Kurt Sutter (PIE, Sons of Anarchy) join us this week as (potentially) our first married couple to share their experience working together on the hit series Sons of Anarchy, finding love through sobriety, and fighting for marriage while giving grace to your partner at their lowest. Kurt talks about the creative inception of Sons of Anarchy, while Katey shares her gratitude for being able to get out of the comedic box that she was put into after the success of Married With Children. We also talk about the working relationship between a director and actor, Katey’s rockstar origins in Hollywood, and Kurt’s upcoming series The Abandons.

Agree, the wonderful thing about The Shield, compared to something like The Wire, is that the overall arc of the story feels much tighter. The Wire meandered a bit, wrapped its initial storyline, and then instead of ending, continued with a greatly diminished story. Taken as a body of work The Shield ranks very high to me.
Kurt Sutter what you brought to the Otto Delaney character was genius. Sheer unmistakable genius. I tip my cap to you. Award worthy performance

At 70, Katey Sagal is as gorgeous as she's ever been. Kurt's a lucky guy. She's one of my favorite actors as well. I'm glad she's still in the game years after the show I watched religiously as a teen (Married with Children).

I grew up with Katey in Married and then 8 simple rules. And then SOA. LOVE LOVED then hated her. Always respected it.
I had the pleasure of meeting them both. They are so nice in person. I was in awe with how genuine and kind they were. They remind me of my own friends and how you could just sit and hang out and have a great time. They don't put on airs, even though both have great wealth. Lovely people.
I wish we could expect that from all celebrities and human beings in general instead of having to be pleasantly surprised 🙂

He wrote a few lines into An episode of Mayans that were anti Disney after they bought fox. One of the lines was something like “this is where Walt buried all the Jews he killed”. After that aired they forced him out and accused him of being abusive to coworkers and being an all around piece of shit. After that Sutter said it would take a public apology to bring him back into the fold.
@@seanwilks7712 why would Disney have to apologize? Kurt chose to put that line in to his show after the FX/Disney merger. It may have been his opinion about Disney, he shouldn’t of said it . I would absolutely love a prequel series about the First 9 . Unfortunately it’s not going to happen anytime soon

I’m literally just repeating what Sutter said. He is referring to them saying he was fired for being abusive to the cast and hard to work with, when the truth was he was fired for the lines he wrote for Mayans.

@@Scientist_Salarian that would be a poor allocation of funds anyway. The time-honoured practice in entertainment is to have the pack sitting on the table or jutting from someone's shirt pocket. It was so blatant in the 60s that the host smoked on air and even as late as 2020 I saw a 60 Minutes interview with AC/DC where both band members interviewed smoked constantly. No-one in that band needs sponsorship money but they reached the point where they could do whatever they wanted - I suspect that some of the SOA cast felt the same way as the series progressed.
@@arthurwatts1680 Mission Impossible (TV) had such heavy Phillip Morris sponsorship that the actors were required to smoke a % of the time. Greg Morris even named his kid Phillip.
@@Automedon2 that was decades before SOA and very common in the entertainment industry. I remember a dying Yul Brynner urging people not to smoke after a career that revolved around his tough guy image. Kids vaping is the battleground here in Oz now and from October vapes will only be available from pharmacies. Yep, our drug stores will sell nicotine to addicts.
Still holding out hope for a series about The First 9, even if it's only 8 to 10 episodes. SOA is still one of the top 5 tv shows ever made. And Mayans was never the same after they kicked Kurt off his own creation, which is a shame because the first season or two were really good before it went off the rails. But they did go out strong with that finale.
I would absolutely love a prequel series about the first 9 . It should all about how JT and Piney came home from vietniem and started the club. The series should also answer a lot unanswered questions about how JT met Gemma, how the club got into gun running and what started the beef between samcro and the mayans .
The mayans series was absolutely great and honestly I was sad that Kurt got kicked off but Elgin did a great job he learned a lot from Kurt and then Elgin went his own way with the show it was just too good
SOA started out so good, and devolved into such stupidity by the end. I could barely finish it. The Shield went out strong.

Six Feet Under has an okay ending but it's so confusing hardly anyone understands it.
Partly because it turned more and more self-indulgent in its music montages to the point where I think it should have become a Broadway show.
M*A*S*H, The Shield, The Good Place, Breaking Bad = Best series finales of all time.
Something on the ceiling must be pretty entertaining for Kurt - he keeps staring up there.
SOA had fantastic potential at the start- vigilante justice, protecting territory, strong (yet toxic) family bonds... then if felt like it fell apart when boys started going to jail and ratting on each other... then who was going to murder who... and I couldn't hang past season 3. -.-
Fair play for Michael for the way he put the question. Could've easily just gone, we've had a lot of actors from Sons on who have negative thing to say about you, discuss?

In all fair honesty, sorry I never heard of Michael Rosenbaum or watched any of his movies but this podcast is great and now revisiting the movies that he's done in the past he's a pretty damn good actor too. I didn't realize my bad lol

1:45 I totally assumed that the guys would be like that. Just watching the show, you sensed the lines were no doubt blurred between actor and character. Even seeing the cast guys interviews in regards to the show, you sensed they were not separating fantasy from reality. So long as they were on the show, THEY WERE the character pretty much, on and off camera. That must have been something to see that on the set every day. Ego, attitude, etc. Boys Club. I know of guys who watched the show and became obsessed with being like the guys on the show. Emulate them, and live that life. Disturbing.
When talking about Taylor Sheridan leaving the SOA for a career in writing/showrunning, Jon Bernthal said something along the lines of "I guess he got tired of being around delusional actors who thought they were real bikers." or something to that extent lol.

I will say one thing if all Kirk stutter did with his life his life’s work would be complete because SOA that was just a fantastic show on so many levels.

First season was one of the best shows I had ever watched.I just couldnt stay in it after a couple more.
Seasons 1&2 were great. The rest of the show was pretty hit-and-miss for me.
I prefer Kathy's directness than this guys blowing smoke up people's asses.

Agreed. It became soap opera-ish. But it was still overall very good. I miss that time period on cable tv. There was Breaking Bad, Justified, SOA, and good ole Walking Dead had its moments.
First 4 seasons or so, after that it kinda fell off the rails

Katy’s character was one of the main drawbacks of the show. She was a side character who ended up with more screen time than the primary protagonists due to who was running the show. And that’s aside from her character repeatedly getting shoe horned into multiple arcs that she had no right being in.

Original vintage movie posters are usually folded not rolled, because that’s how they were shipped to theaters, they’re probably real vintage posters. As for the glare he could get anti glare glass but it’s expensive and he has the right to spend his money anyway he wants.

I was at a horror con in New Orleans about 10 years ago. One of the few girlfriends I've managed to get, at that point hated the show and then she eventually wanted to dress up as zombie gemma Teller, and I was walking around and ran into some of the cast of sons of anarchy. And with the exception of Ron perlman they were just douchebags. They did act like they were real bikers and tough guys. It was funny to see.

@@jenicdarling9425 I'll only speak positively after submitting a negative post... Ron perlman was just cool. He was just nice and down to take pictures. But it was outside the con and my ex didn't realize he was hellboy and when she did she melted and he just put an arm around her like your favorite uncle and I took a couple shots on my phone and he was nice. He did say though,"hey if you publish those I get 15%." It was just a nice way to end the con.

Obviously you’ve never interacted with any fans of both shows. The general consensus is Mayans went to shit after Sutter left and James became sole showrunner. The first 3 seasons were top notch television and the final two seasons were slow and boring. Also, Sutter made a promise before Mayans debuted that they would never make SOA the antagonists of the show, something Elgin James did the very first chance he got(essentially making Jax’s hard work and sacrifice completely pointless).
