Theo and Bee gave up their busy city lifestyles in 2014 to explore alternative living, and have lived in vans and boats since then without looking back! Along with their cat Ginjey Bear they have been driving around the world in their self converted Sprinter van. However, when the global pandemic hit they began converting their abandoned stone barn in Central Portugal to turn into a wonderful tiny stone cottage. Along the way, they have rescued a playful cat called Furrnando and have a wonderful flock of Chickens!

200,000 euros renovation costs . Rental income of 1000 euros per week for 25 weeks a year . Takes 8 years to repay the renovation costs before tax !! This is not in my opinion a viable proposition. What do others think ?

Theo, it's just warms my heart to see you so excited about this project. You are a true warrior, you get hit down (Bee too) and you get back up and keep moving forward...no matter the adversity. You asked are we excited about this project, well I am that's for sure.... It was such a joy watching you bring your homestead house from a dark dingy stone barn to the bright beauty it is today. Sounds like a great project. I’m always traveling around Portugal in a campervan and love staying a farms and small campgrounds. Perhaps you can dedicate a bathroom with shower and a few level parking spots that can can charge for guests to use in addition to the apartments

How about people staying in their own campervans etc & work in exchange of rent/main meal. You would only need a bathroom set up for them. Heck I would travel to Portugal for a month from Australia to stay with you guys and work in exchange 😊

When the building was built. The Animals would have helped keep the home warm in winter. Animal body heat would have risen to heat the home for the family. They still build like this all over the Middle East.

OMG! Theo I am so excited! One suggestion is make the 2 barns into smaller living areas to accommodate more guests. BDW a fissure and a crack is 2 different things, check the lental good, if it a fissure you might be able to fix it using the epoxy blend fabricators use.
I see at least two or three apartments for holiday-rental. ❤
I would suggest you consider handicapped accessibility in your plans. It can be done without looking institutional and will greatly increase your client base.

Am sure you have heard of WOOFERS right? Then maybe that would be one avenue you could explore for help on your farm. Those scaffoldings have a lot more life to them, maybe fencing for animals or something. Prayers being sent from Maine to Portugal to both of you guys.

As beautiful it is as a "ruin", it will be magnificent once you restore the way you want it. Love hearing your excitement! This will be an exciting project to follow, although I couldn’t help but think of your first off-grid property….the back wall was leaking and needed to be rendered last we saw. What’s to become of it after you put so much blood sweat and tears into it? Keep it? Sell it? Maybe you can address it as I’m sure I’m not the only one wondering.

Hi Theo, what an exciting project. It might be worth you talking to Scotters go off grid, eho live close to the Newbys. They are rebuilding an old stone house of very similar construction and have been using local groundworkers and stonemason to build an extension. Watching them work with the enormous stones is mesmerising. Their latest video released on Sunday is great and an earlier one where the groundworkers and Mason built massive walls to support a kitchen extension. ❤ love to you both.

Theo, I renovated a 500-year old apartment in Italy. I put in a skylight which brings in more light than any window in the place. I would strongly recommend a skylight or two.
So excited to see you guys tackle this. I’d make the barns a big open plan kitchen/living space leading out on to a terrace and those beautiful fruit groves!

A tip for when looking for an architect make sure they are experienced in historic buildings too. It's the history you love of the building. Some nice treasures the old owners left behind.

Also Martin Doolard just finished renovating a shepherds summerhouse in the Italian Alps- it has a stone roof on it like your ‘doghouse’! Italy, France, and Portugal! All sharing building styles based on building materials

Might I suggest that you consider making the ruined house accessible, if possible, so that people with mobility issues can also visit. As a wheelchair user, it’s always a struggle to find lovely places to stay. Thanks.
In my Much Younger days, I spent $400.00 US to go help work on a Earth House here in the states. It lasted 4 weeks and we camped in tents, had out houses, took baths in the river and learned Alot about Earth Homes, building, electrical, solar, brick making...it was a blast. You might consider something like that to get help to rebuild that massive stone building....plus you will be teaching others about reuse and repurpose, and living off grid.

The heat damaged stone walls could be rebuilt with a block wall that you face the exterior with stone so it retains the character. I wouldn't trust the large cracked lintel as if it fails that is too much weight to come crashing down and the walls above it with it. If you can dig down to give additional height on the RDC level it would be good but you may need a foundation under the walls to do that. The end barn with the single slopped roof could become a garage for the house.

Hello, I think the two barns should be made into a pantry or root caller for preserving foods and the other one into a large kitchen to dobthe preserving in the extend the second floor over the two barns with a porch in front with 2 living areas for guest. Then you can have an attic bed room and two smaller bed rooms and a bathroom and a main living room and table area. This would allow for processing the fruit trees and storing the produce easier and having guest rent out space to come and visit you.

I think you might start referring to "the Miracle Mountain Estate"! That heap of big stones makes me wonder whether a previous owner had plans to put up another house.
The big stones are from the house we live in, that was also a big stone house that they completely re built.
Hi Theo and bee… have you ever thought of putting in workshops!! People pay to come and learn how to rebuild a house.. lay floors.. repoint the stone etc…. They could come and camp on your property you make the food every day and it could be a great help to get some more hands to help!!!

So much potential for the stone house, just as well you have a seemingly unlimited supply of enthusiasm.
The oak will grow enormous over the years so is far too close to the house, plus Portugal has regulations about how close they can be to dwellings I think.
If this isn't a silly question is there a way to build with materials that would resist fire somehow? Still so many trees very close by to present a hazard in a conflagration.
And I know you will do all though job after watching you and bee the last two and half years what you done to the little house and land and what done here already is fantastic. Hope bee is getting on ok back here in the uk and HOPE yOu ARE OK THERE on your own as well take care 👍👍
