The NEW Michelin Defender LTX M/S Review for 2021!

- I'm closing out April with the new Michelin Defender LTX M/S Review for 2021! You'll see it has a symmetric tread pattern like the old Michelin defender LTX M/S, but with an updated compound. I think you'll find this review helpful if you've been thinking about getting a set of these tires. They are quiet, smooth, and last a long time, but they are on the pricey side. The tire shown is a 225/65/R17 and retails for around $196.99
As always let me know your thoughts in the comments below. Thanks!

I have these on my 99 extra cab 8ft bed f150 and have driven them to San Fran from San Diego with ease. I also have taken them many miles off road in sandy washes in borrego springs. Love them!
Bought a set of these from campus automotive and I am very pleased with them. My second set of Michelin’s on my Tahoe which now has 109,000 miles. Very pleased with the performance and the service from Matt and the team at Campus. Great review Matt.
Great to hear!
Great tire. I've put almost 10k on my set (09 Nissan Frontier V6 4WD, manual). Very smooth and quiet tire that has stayed in balance and has excellent traction on wet roads or light snow. They're an 800 A-A tire and act like it. They show very little wear at this point.
I just put a set of these Michelin Defender LTX for my wife’s Infiniti QX-80 because they just started making this tire in 275/50 R22. Had them on about a month and wow! Best riding tire I have ever bought and if they go 70k miles it will be worth the money. They are expensive but so far worth it and they look great on this kind of SUV.
Thanks Matt, your tire reviews are always great!
Thanks for the feedback!
i put these on my 04' highlander & they're amazing. the stability & grip they have is great, looking forward to seeing how they are in floridas rainy season
I've been using LTX's on my Land Rovers for many years, and if you only look at the price point they appear to be expensive. A set of tires will last 2x to 3x longer than the comparable Goodyear's, Firestone's, Continental's, Geolander's, WHY. I've driven many miles from hot, highway conditions to snow covered forest service roads, and never had a moment when I even questioned my tire choice. They perform better than the tread pattern would suggest off road,
IMO, they're well worth the money.
Awesome. I agree with you 100%.
There simply the best...
Thank you for your in depth tire reviews! Decided to put these tires (275/65/18) on my 2016 F-150, and so far they are everything I was expecting. Keep up the good work!
Glad you like them!
@@CampusautoCo Just replaced a set of worn out Michelin Premiere's with the Defenders no comparison. The Defenders are twice the tire, but too early to give it a total review waiting to see the total results.
What load rating did you get with that size? I see they have I believe 116 and a 123 load rating. I have the same truck and tow a travel trailer and thinking of getting the 123 load index.
Thank you for the information. I just got a set of tires that I HAVE NEVER heard of it. Landspider Wildtraxx M/T 35x12.50R20LT (Load E)
EMT018
I keep changing tires due to dry rot within 6 years in Arizona..... and that’s before 5,000 miles. This time I’m going cheap and see the difference.
Just got a pair for my explorer and i came from 2/32nds "mastercraft LSR" and even the drive home felt so damn good. I cant wait for snow and rain to really test these out.
I’m getting these tires next week. First time owning a set Michelins. I have family in your area, love visiting the blue ridge!
Looking to replace my LTX M/S2 after 70k miles on them. I didn't believe the tire salesman when he told me I'd get that many miles on them but I did.. I could actually probably get another 10k if I didn't get a screw in the drives side.
Looks like I'll be going with a set of the Defenders now! Thanks for the informative video!
My dad says these are the best set of tires he’s ever had on his f250 they do good on ice and hard packed snow and actually dig pretty good in deep snow he’s been through bumper deep snow while pulling a car and didn’t get stuck
First snow storm today here in MN I love these tires
Really enjoy your channel. Just bought some for my F-150. Thank You for the review.
Awesome! Thank you!
At age 67, having had many different pickups and tire combinations I can honestly say these are the best tires for my Superduty……. Highest recommendation!!
Yeah there the best, worth every penny...
Thanks for the review, I'm going to switch out the winter tires on my CRV for these. I live in New England and do a lot of highway miles, I want quiet, well-balanced tires, and I'm happy to know these will perform ok with occasional bad weather before I get the winters on again. I used to drive Uber too and I can appreciate the excellent treadwear. Thanks for helping me make my decision.
I live in New England too.We need good wet weather/snow traction. I think these defenders will be perfect for my 4 runner
I've had the tires on a few days, excellent so far, smooth ride!
Got these on my Tacoma and best tires I’ve ever owned. Smooth ride and comfort. 55k on them so far and plenty of life left in them.
Right on
I just bought these for my Chevy Colorado diesel. I have a GM Mastercard and collected points for 6 years to buy them and a new battery. Replaced some Goodyears that had some tread left but had no traction. Really didn’t feel too much different on the drive home. Good looking tire. I’m just hoping for good wet weather traction.
I bought a set of 4 from Discount Tire back in February of 2022 for my 2003 Dodge Ram 1500 4x4. I drive about 8-10K miles per year, and so far they're awesome. With the low mileage I drive, I'll most likely have to get new tires due to age before treas wear.
I will put these on my 2019 Sahara Unlimited. Thanks for the demonstration
Best tires I have ever owned. I have been using Michelins Defenders for years.
I had a set of these on my 2006 Tundra. They were very good tires . Pretty quite, smooth ride, good rolling resistance but not too much and I got 45,000 miles or so which is great for my truck which I usually only get 40,000 miles on a set. I'm due for a new set of tires soon and I'm planning on getting another set. I recommend them as they are the best tires I've used.
Hey Matt, love the videos. They help me so much with tire buying. However I'm interested in the Michelin Agilis Crossclimate. Do you have in info and or experience with this tire? Maybe a Video? Thanks Matt!
Iv had these 2021 LTXs on my 2018 Enclave for a year now in Michigan. Love them! It rides very smooth, quiet, and has amazing gip on snow and ice. I think it's the sipping and compound... it almost feels like a winter tire in it's grip.
I also have an enclave and was looking at getting these tires. Would you still recommend them?
Absolutely! Tires are amazing.
Excellent summary. Honest, authoritative and very informative. Thank you very much.
Glad you enjoyed it!
You’re my tire guy I’ve learned a lot! I am looking at these for my wife’s RAV4 highbred XSC! 225/60/18 They don’t show that size can I go up to 235/with no problems
Have these on my wife's yukon xl and no complaints at all trying these on my ram 1500 next month
This is a great review. Thanks for posting it! Keep it up.
Thanks for watching!
If these are anything like the Latitudes, I would give a EASY PASS and get Nok One. I also used Pilelli Scorpion Verde 3 I think it is/was, and they were very good, but not so much in the rain. Guy sounds like a professional sales man. Well done.
Been waiting for this
JUST put these brand new on my 2012 F-150... QUIET comfortable ride and great on dry pavement so far! Can't wait to see how they handle this winter. VERY VERY pleased thus far.
How did they handle winter for you?
@@daoyang8919 perfectly! Best tires ever hands down.
These are the best tires on the market period .I love these , they are not marketed as a all terrain but the truth is they are . I've tried just a out every set of all terrain tires on the market this is the only set ive been extremely impressed with ride quality is so smooth loved the ko2s the ride quality is not for me to harsh for the trade off of the aggressive tread.
Thanks for the feedback!
your reviews are great what other tire would be second to it ,and would it be good for 4+4 tacoma
Great video! You should consider doing the new Mickey Thompson Baja A/T or Cooper Discoverer Rugged Trek next. Thanks
On it!
These are expensive, but awesome tires. Good grip, handles good, good in rain, great on the highway. On my 2wd I will definitely be buying another set in a couple years.
They can handle fine gravel roads and rocks pretty well off road. Not good in mud, unless there is gravel or rock under the mud.
Right on
Have these on a Yukon XL and Suburban. They are EXCELLENT, and especially on wet roads! Cheap out on not buying these, we'll see you in the ditch.
I have a set of these in 295/65/20 (35.1 inches tall) on a 2021 f250 and love them. 4080 pound load rating at 80 psi when towing my 5th wheel. When not towing I run them at 60 psi front and 50 psi rear and they ride great. Quit on the highway. Only complaint is they throw rocks bad when on gravel and dirt roads.
Interesting because dirt/rock County roads that we drive on for 2 miles just to get to a real road is why we were considering them. Oems get torn up in 10,000 miles on our road
Your review was very informative. Would these tires be good for a 2018 Nissan Murano? Tire size is 235/65 R18.
Just got these at Costco for my
Grand Cherokee..can’t wait for them to install them…
A buddy of mine had a set of these on his truck. When I tell you I’ve never been more impressed with a tire… I mean it. He drove through a alley in 2-3 feet of snow with these things, they didn’t even flinch. He drives daily on gravel roads too, it’s just the cost that holds me back as well as the plain sidewall look but they do stay nice as black.
Did you end up getting them? I am in the same boat
Good to know. Thanks for the input.
Some of us like the plain side wall…just saying. For tri-state area driving (in traffic mostly)
I dont want to look like i’m off roading lol
@@mikerzisu9508 nope. Went with the KO2s. Needed that strong sidewall. Fantastic tires, don’t even need to use 4x4 in the winter. I got a good deal for them.
@@mikerzisu9508i got them there pretty good
Good video. Which Michelins tires you recommends for a Honda Pilot 2022 Black edition originally has continental 245/50 SL 20” continental crosscontac Lx sport. Which Michelin always I have better experience. And thanks for the info.
Just bought these for my 2018 4runner TRD Off Road, felt the difference immediately on my drive home on the highway, felt as if I had upgraded the suspension, very impressed. Looking forward to see how they handle the elements.
I have the same truck, 2017 model. Put on these tires at 35 psi and felt like I was driving the GMC Yukon Denali I rented for vacation and drove 3,000 miles the year before! Absorbs the bumps and road strips like a champ and just smooth all the way around. Amazing transformation from the original Bridgestone OEM tires.
Helpful to hear that. I have a 21 TRD ORP and made the mistake of putting BFG KO2 on them right when I bought. Turns out that one year later and I have put 18,000 miles of highway and maybe 20 miles of gravel road hahah
I want something that will be smoother and better on the road
Any update on the tires? I just bought them yesterday
Ram 1500 Limited. 22" Wheels factory. 98% of driving on highway. No towing other than jet ski's and a pontoon boat. Would you recommend these or the Discoverer AT3 4S, or the Terraincontact A/T? Love your channel!
@campusautomotive I really really want to try the AT2, but having watching a ton of content on it… it seems the newer produced tires seem to wear faster and have more problems. Is that fair to say?
Best tire for Honda HRV? I do a lot of camping, but not so much in mud or snow. Looking for something with some longevity. Thanks in advance!
I got these on my suv. I live in bc where there is every road condition imaginable, including steep grades. I'm really impressed with these tires they are performing extremely well in British Columbia's winter.
Still good?
@Michael-yj6kk yes been using for a year and a half summer and winter. I've been very happy with this tire, and I still have tons of tread left
Put those on my 02 Chevy 2500hd. I had BF Goodrich AT and they lasted great for me (60k) but I wanted to try some Michelin’s. Instantly noticed smoother ride and super quiet! Because I’m almost all hwy I’m super happy with them so far!
Right on
I have the bfg’s now and am considering the ltx’s, it’s just such a different tire, are u really happy with them?
@@Pinhigh1982 yes, I’m really happy with them. But I drive hwy. I’ve already put over 3k miles and got in some rain and I have felt confident in the tires. I liked the BF Goodrich but because not using the truck for off-road the Michelin made sense to me.
@@fildavis2024 thanks for the info I appreciate it 🤘
Great video ! Do you know where this tire is made ? I've had Coopers because they were made in the USA . Thank You !
Great review man !
I have been looking strongly at the defender ltx. However I recently discovered the wildpeak HT02. It would be great if someone would do a side by side comparison of the two.
Would you recommend the sl or load range e for a 2018 4runner that does some off-roading on forest service roads out West? I’m currently using BFG KO2s load range C.
I have been using LTX M/S on my SUVs, trucks and crossovers and even a full size 3/4 ton Chevy work van. Every time I switched to something else, things went bad, and I had to go back to Discount Tire and have LTX M/S put back on. While using them I have never had a reason to think, gee if I only had some better tires on here. All the off-roading I have done they worked fine and were not the limiting factor in my ability to get in or out a place.
My wife's Honda Pilot needed a new set of LTXs and I let someone convince me a different tire would be better for her Pilot. She doesn't know anything about tires or cars but the next day she didn't even know I put new tires on, but she did say "What the hell did I do to my Honda! it doesn't drive right" I said I put better tires on. She told me to put it back the way it was. So I did and now she says I don't know anything, but I know what tires my Honda needs.
you really seem to be very knowledgeable. would you mind telling me the best all season touring tire for a 2019 RX350 AWD? oem size is 235/55/20. i dont mind trading a bit of snowy traction for a more quiet, comfy ride. thank you so much.
I have these exact same tires on my RAV4 and they are excellent. Well worth the cost.
Right on!
What year is your RAV4? I want to try them on my 2013 RAV4 235/55/18, 99H but I only come across this size with T-speed rating. I will not drive up to those speeds though. How did they perform in snow and ice? I live in Massachusetts. Currently these are expensive about $229 per tire.
I’m looking to replace my original Bridgestone Dueler AS tires on my 2018 Subaru Outback and these came up in a video as the number 1 All Season tire of 5 others compared , and based on your description and experience with them as well as the comments here I think I’ll try them out .
I mostly drive on paved roads but
I do light off-road adventures on occasion in northern Michigan where two tracks can go anywhere from sand , dirt , rocks and gravel to muddy slippery and icy with snow covered trails . I was thinking about the Falken Wildpeaks AT , but I read that most people say their fuel mileage is compromised quite a bit . So I think staying with an All Season tire M/S rated is a more practical option than the All Terrain option.
I put these on my 2019 Tacoma TRD Off Road a few months ago...I own a horse farm and use my 4WD around the property a lot..these tires look like a highway tire but I am SHOCKED how well these tires do!!! I put about 40-50K miles a year on my truck...so I go through a LOT of tires...I used the GY Kevlar tires (stock) for the past 2 sets on my truck and these LTX M/S ride much better in the snow, rain and off road!! I have had them in the snow a lot and again I'm VERY impressed!!
I just bought a set for my wife's GMC High Top Conversion van. These tires are TERRIFIC!!!!!!!
Thanks for the feedback!
Thanks for the info. Want to put them on my Tacoma.
Hi Matt, Is there a difference between LTX MS and LTX MS2? Can only see just MS, not MS2 for a Honda Odyssey size 235/65R17. I'm open to any recommendations, thanks.
I like your review of the Michelin Defender LTX but I decided to go with the new Nokian Outpost APT and we're about $250 a set cheaper. The tire has almost identical specs as the Michelin but has the Three Peak Snokflakes rating. The tire is a little louder the the stock Toyo touring M&S but seems to be quieting down after a few hundred miles.
I have had several sets of these. They’re great!
Nice
Michelin Defender LTX M/S and Firestone Destination LE3, the same size, of which, the comprehensive performance is better? Tks
They look identical to my Pirelli scorpion ice and snow, that tread pattern is very quiet. My tyres are for winter only, technology has change since I bought my Pirellis 5 years back.
I am not from the USA unfortunately.. but.. I still need some advice please.. I have a 2018 Ford Ranger 2.2 supercab/kingcab/ cab and a half.. It came standard with continental 255/70/R16. I was able to squeeze around 40K mile out of them.. I'm looking to go to Michelin's. What I can get here in South Africa are the LTX Trail ST.. Are these higher millage and great grip wet and dry? I'm not too worried about road noise but am more worried about safety and longevity.. we dont have snow like you do and I dont do off-road much, but if I do it would me a normal hard gravel road. Please could you give me your professional advice...
Great videos by the way..very detailed and informative..
Between these and the LX25 which tires would you go with for a midsize SUV?
They're surprisingly good in snow and in soft beach sand.
I have a Ram 1500, and was confused between the defender LTX MS and LT AT2. I usually do highway driving with minimal off (gravel/beach) , which one would you recommend ?
I drive a 2019 Dodge Durango GT, I really like this tire Over the Bridgestone Ecopia.
I agree with everything you said about these tires but they are expensive and my yukon denali is 16 years old. How does the continental tire balance out? I'D buy it if it balances out as well as the Michelin
Thanks for an informative video. I'm now more confident that the set of these I have arriving day after tomorrow, to be installed Friday from TireRack. Price was actually better than many of the similar competing tires from other manufacturers. Going on my F350.
Glad I could help
Can you review the Maxxis Bravo 770.
What would you consider putting on the Lexus GX 460?
I've bought for my 2020 Ram Limited, $1676 with the warranty protection plan (Belle Tire). Far superior to the factory Goodyears that came with the truck. Just got the Michelins installed yesterday, they are absolutely phenomenal!
22” wheels?
That's a darn great price.
We paid 1900 for a set
If comparing this tire in a E load would it ride softer over bumps and what not compared to Toyo At3 E rated? I have the Toyo at3 E and it not a comfortable ride in the city. I feel every bump even with low tire pressure.
Do they make a load rating E version of these? I have a 2013 ford expedition EL. It’s a big SUV. Not sure if the standard load would be ok?
Hello, What tire would you recommend for a 2014 Ram 1500 crew cab 4wd in New York.
95%. Highway driving?
Thank you
John
Would you recommend the LTX for the Subaru Outback?
Would you recommend this tire for a 2017 Ram 1500 Rebel? For me it is between the Michelin LTX M/S or the Michelin LTX AT/2. Remember the Rebel has the 55psi front and 45psi back.
Balancing well is very important. It is annoying when there is a mystery vibration as it can be hard to track down the cause, and don’t need more potential causes of vibration. This is why I am hesitant about your favorite pick, the Continental TerrainContact AT. If Continental would address this issue I would buy them immediately. For now I may stick with this Michelin Defender LTX or try something new and different like Vredestein Pinza AT. One question - does the LT version of the Michelin have much different road feel vs. the P rated version? I am tempted to move up to the LT version for even better cut and puncture resistance on sharp gravel.
How are these compared to the Pirelli a/s plus 3. Im putting these on an Escalade and I’m in between both. I did order the Pirelli but can change it
@Campus Automotive whats the best tire for a 2019 Chevy Tahoe LT 265/65R18?
Been enjoying your reviews! Wondering if this is over kill for a 2016 Subaru Crosstrek with just148 horsepower? 225/55/17. I like the idea of good road manors and off-road capabilities with out looking to meaty. Thanks and Happy New Year!
I actually looked at a lot of tires and just bought it from discount tires. Getting them installed this Saturday.Needed reliability in the rain.
How does this tire compare to the Primacy ltx? Features, use, benefits, etc.
Have these on a Tacoma and a RAV4. Can’t beat the treadwear or the traction in ice, rain, and snow for a highway tread.
A little more up front but great price per mile like you said.
I am ordering these for my Tacoma did you see any increase in fuel mileage
@@PHILLIPS8822 nice Darryl. I think you’ll be happy with them. I did see a .5-1 mpg change over the stock Toyos and the ride is much quieter with mine. I can’t complain at all with them.
Have a good day.
Great review. Appreciate how in-depth it is. You mentioned that it is a good tire for CUV. It looks a lot like a truck tire to me (not an expert) and I'm wondering if you think it would be a good match for a 2013 FWD Toyota RAV4.
Yes it will.
@@CampusautoCo I went ahead and got these tires. I couldn't be happier. These tires are AMAZING. By far the very best tires I have ever had and the best I've had on my 2013 RAV4. I drove 3,000 miles within 2 weeks of getting the tires and I couldn't believe how great they were. The handling was noticeably improved even in perfect driving conditions. In one leg of the trip we drove through torrential rains. Very confidant handling.
Thank for the video and advice. I greatly appreciate it.
Great review! Would you recommend these tires for a 2017 Kia Sorento AWD? I want Michelin's but I am not sure which ones to get. I am done with the OEM Kumho's.
Yes, definitely
Which tire do you recommend for Cadillac Escalade? Size 22 inch
I only buy Michelin tires... My Dad did, what can I say? lol Just put a set of these on my F350. Heaviest weight rating I could find for my SRW truck. 295/70R18 rated at 4080lbs. Driving them home, I noticed a huge difference coming from BFG A/T's. Can't wait to load up the camper and RZR and see how they handle.
Awesome. Keep me posted.
I'm torn between these and The BFG terrain T terrain TA for my Ford F150I drive it in the snow a little bit off road mostly on road
what do you recommend for a 2015 Lexus RX350 for quiet nice ride
Would they be good on an f150 when towing a travel trailer? I only tow it about 4 times a year.
A few months I spent countless hours viewing and attaining info on tires for my 2021 TRD PRO Tundra, my first truck. The truck came with Nitto Grapplers, looked incredible, however I was concerend on wet weather and noise, and MPG. After many video's this video and some of your others were the reason I went with the Defender LTX MS. They are NOT sexy by any means especially on a trd pro tundra, but oh man that ride! Living in Florida, all city an highway driving with summer rains this was a practical choice. THANK YOU for that! That being said, we do go to our cabin, Blue Ridge Mts, for winter. Although not CO snow there is some, but mainly gravel driving up the moutain, wet weather an agan some snow. What tires would you recommend considering a 9 hr drive there, Fuel economy, road noise yet a slight more aggresive for handling harsher conditions? Im curently looking at KO'2s, AT3's, Toyo's and yes maybe even the nitto's again although I hear they are not great in wet weather. Thoughts??
Nope. You are good with what you have. If you do change, I would try the Continental Terrain Contact AT. The others will be too aggressive for you.
How will they do in Colorado on a 2017 Ford F-150 Lariat 4x4 ? Thank you
Love your videos man! Getting obsessed with deciding on the right tire for my Grand Cherokee High Altitude V8 and your video help a ton.
You mention these tires are good for specific trucks so I'm wondering if you think these would be good for a V8 GC High Altitude like I have or do you think there are more specific tires you'd go with an SUV like that? Maybe an idea for the next video?
Thanks a lot, keep it up!
Agree! Wondering what is great for the Jeep Grand Cherokee, too? I drive a lot local, quite a bit of highway and long road trips a few times a year. Not very much off roading but love the idea. I may tow a boat in the near future too.
I’m deciding between this tire or the Continental Cross Contact A/T. Thoughts on the two?
@@JohnnyMK78 what did you end up getting? I am in the same boat with my 2018 grand cherokee limited. Really leaning towards these tires but would love to hear opinions. My stock michelin premier ltx tires wore out around 40k miles, so am a bit concerned about that these
So did you end up getting them? How have they been?
@@danielsoutdoors Yes, I did end up getting them Last February. They are fantastic tires and I don't regret my purchase at all. Great grip in all conditions. I haven't really taken the Jeep offroading or through mud so I don't have any feedback there. Snow/rain is fantastic.
Overall, very happy with my purchase and would recommend.
@@Artamon8371 Thanks. I’ll probably go ahead and get them for my Jeep GC.
Would you recommend this tire for a 2021 RAV4 Prime?
My local Costco says that I cannot put these tires on my 2016 Platinum Tundra CM because of the speed rating. Anyone know if this is correct?
I had these tires on my old truck, over 50,000 miles and when I traded that truck in the tires still had around 60% tread.
Id like to see a video on michelins agilis cross climate for passenger and LT's. As well as your opinion on which would be better for a heavy duty truck 2500/3500, agilis or defender, for part time towing.
The Cross Climate product line is designed with snow performance in mind. If you're in a climate where that's a serious issue, those will be the higher value option for you. But you do lose out on treadwear. Non-LT CC tires are consistently 600 treadwear rated vs 800 for the Defender LTX. So any CC tire will give you 3/4 of the treadlife of a Defender LTX. LT tires don't have posted treadwear ratings due to use case, but in my experience they perform as well as their non-LT counterparts assuming you're not pushing the boundaries of your truck's GVWR on the daily.
In terms of comfort, I haven't had any complaints after putting CCs on customer vehicles. Tire Rack's testing falls right in line with that experience. The main tradeoff I see is life span vs snow performance.
I think the Defender LTX would be a better choice.
Just put a set of 4 on my 2016 Dodge Dart SXT. Far better than the Michelin Premier I used to use. Great during rainy weather & I suspect they'll be much better in snow !
I bet. That is alot of tire for a Dart.
How many miles did you get on your premiers? That is the stock tire I have now on my grand cherokee 2018 and they are pretty much gone at 39k miles
@@mikerzisu9508 The Premiers were great wet grip tires but, like you, I averaged about 35K. I've already got 20K on my LTX's and they hardly look broken in. I expect to get well over 50/60K from the looks of them.
Just saw your video. Very informative. I have a 2017 Ram 2500 mega cab with Cummins diesel and tow a travel trailer. Looking to replace off/on road coopers with something quieter and smoother. Would these Michelins be a good option?
Sure would.
I just ordered another set of defenders! With tires I’ll put my money in up front on Michelins… and they won’t let me down later!
Nice
is this tire better than the Cross Climate 2?
