    For anybody struggling with this, it’s all about your muscles in your picking arm. The more you practice the gallop rhythm, no mater how may it may sound, the more you practice and the more you will build the muscles in your arm, the better, more constant, and the faster you gallops will get.

    I have never seen anyone explain this technique so clearly! I always force the down strokes to get the sound, and never considered playing sixteenth notes to achieve it..the hardest part is annunciating them like the song Murmaider by Dethklok..it's not a "Gallup" and sounds more like a quick triplet or 32nd notes all on beat one..great video thank you sir!

I have been fiddling with playing guitar since i was a kiddo in the early 80's and now that I'm older and can actually buy some of the stuff I could never have as a kid, I really want to learn to play. Its so hard to find a good instructor that has a plan on how he/she wants to teach in a fairly organized manor. The Metallica gallop sounds so heavy I can never quite nail that, it always sounds like a fast Maiden gallop, the thrash gallop sounds like there two notes instead of three.🎸

  • @thereasonableamericans411

    Steve, I could use some help on something I'm experiencing with this gallop thing, maybe others have too. I accidentally learned this by doing the first into notes to the theme song for "King of the Hill". I then found it again today with the main rhythm in "One Headlight" by the wallflowers. BOTH use this gallop but unfortunately (I think?) I've accomplished this gallop song in a different way than you're describing and it comes easy to me but it might be wrong and I can't ditch it now. :( Essentially what's happening is I play Down, Up, Down Then because my pick is already down, I play Up Down Up. It's like paradiddle in drumming. I'm playing triplets but the starting position alternates. I can do this quick enough to play along with either of those songs but, is this a problem, the way I'm accomplishing it? I don't want to burn in a bad habit. I can't seem to do either of the methods you just instructed, at least I can't do them with any kind of speed or consistent repetition. What are your thoughts?

    • @actionpotato
      @actionpotato Před 4 lety

      I kind of learned it the same way years ago. And that theme song is by my favorite band, The Refreshments. They're now known as Roger Clyne and the Peacemakers. Give them a listen, if you get a chance!

    Hello Steve, I am an intermediate guitarist and i am just beginning to get this rhythm down. My problem is that i keep accidentally hitting the string on the upstroke in which im not supposed to play which prevents me from playing the rhythm properly unless i play it very slow. What would you recommend i do to stop this habit and move on to greater speeds with my galloping?

  • @Vampier

    been playing guitar and bass for 22 years now... for the life of me i can't do this (even when going slow). It seems I need to unlearn my 'unhealthy' practices and start to work on pick control.

    IMO Run to the Hills and Disposable Hereos are the best gallops

    I can play the Hardwired pretty nice, but the problem I have is that I flex my bicep on my strumming hand too much, as much as I can actually. I am not sure how to rid of it.

    Hi Steve, how would you play sixteenth sextuplets and sixteenth note triplets? Like for example sixteenth note pairs (each group has 4 sixteenth notes) grouped together under a single triplet header and also how would you play a group of sixteenth notes with the 6 written above them in guitar tab? That confuses the heck out of me in guitar tab.

      Renaissance Man sextuplets and sixteenth note triplets are the same. Six notes per beat. Hope that helps.

    Technique wise, how do you skip the down/up strokes? Thats what I'm struggling with.

      I am not 100% sure, but I think he mentioned tht he makes pause at that point, but I guess other method would beto keep that down up down up steady rythm and just skip one wire stroke. That way your tempo should be more stable.

    So...gallops are created by missing strokes? Here I am, thinking that you have to play them as fast as needed to make it SOUND as if you're missing/changing the beats...Thank you for the great lessons!

    Could play this also with all upstrokes or downstrokes, which makes the alternate picking seem easy. The other option is to also do the picking with the fretting hand. Playing the right handed guitar is so limiting, and playing the mirror image changes ideas and timing.

      Hi. Thanks for commenting. Consistency and practice are really the key to progressing. The more time you spend with the guitar, the faster you'll notice your progress. I know time is always an issue...but finding some time to practice will also keep you motivated. Keep up the good work. All the best! 🙂
