Intonated bends and vibrato bends are the 2 things that can take your playing to that next level especially as a blues player. Having perfect intonation on your bends and being able to pull of some vibrato can make really simple playing feel and sound extremely professional.

Great lesson Steve! This cleared up so much confusion for me. I've never quite able to figure out how to tag a bend with a vibrato, even though it's one of my most coveted techniques. You made it so easy to understand and im finally able to do vibrato and vibrato bends. I was curious though as to what your advice is on understanding the same principles once you incorporate a beat or time? I ask because when I'm improving over backing tracks with friends, i feel like that speed of the vibrato or tremolo effect never sounds quite in time when im playing, but when my friend plays and uses these techniques, a HUGE part of what sounds so amazing, (he's a very very adept player), is how his bends and even vibrato alone is so tight and in time with the music. I wasn't sure if this begins to occur naturally over time almost subconsciously or if i should be practicing the vibrato speed using a metronome?
Thanks for another epic lesson and video!

I realise this is an old comment but one idea is to record yourself improvising and using any techniques that you feel you are deficient in. You may be surprised at how they sound, because when you are playing them you brain is concentrating on more than just listening to the notes. You may sound better than you realise. It's for this reason that it's a good idea when buying a new guitar to have someone else play it, so you can just "listen", rather than concentrate on listening AND playing.

I've been playing for years and have a very good vibrato. However, I developed a terrible habit that I can't break. I never learned how to bend up for vibrato. Bend yes, vibrato no. Now I find myself having to cheat, using the whammy to use vibrato some notes. That great rock note we always hear high on the neck, bending a whole step up and then using vibrato?...... Yeah, I bend up a whole step and use my floating tremolo to vibrato up and down from that note. I never developed the coordination to get a good even vibrato up and down going towards the ceiling. End of my confession. I'm such a failure.

A compression/sustain pedal can work wonders for sustain. So you can hold notes longer without cranking up the volume. :-)
By the way, make sure you check out the GuitarZoom Christmas Sale → guitarzoom.com/christmassale/
Because from now to December 25, you can get up to 95% OFF some of Steve’s most popular guitar courses, including Music Theory For Life (60% OFF), Acoustic Guitar (67% OFF), Modes Masterclass (75% OFF) and much more.

I can only do down bend vibrato, which obviously makes problems when I’m playing on the B or E

In classical guitar, you can just do vibrato like you would on a violin. Just squiggle your fingers left and right. In fact bending might not actually good for your strings

Hi Emre. Consistency is the key. Don't be too hard on yourself and give it some time. Eventually things will start to fall into place. Thanks for posting and keep up the good work!
