Brilliant interview! I am gaining an appreciation for both Matt and Mary now. I am a former Pentecostal and now feeling greatly propelled into the CCR movement somehow, some way. It is going to be very interesting to see where the Lord is going to take me in all this! Never in a million years would I ever have thought I would be where I am in my faith journey, but what a ride as a new convert it has been so far! Praise you and your ways, Jesus. Your will be done, Father. Come, Holy Spirit, we need you!

I have to say I experienced the Baptism in the Holy Spirit in 1974. It was powerful and transformational. My love for the Lord, and the Word has never waned but has grown. At 74 I am still on fire for the Trinity. I lived in New Orleans when the Holy Spirit fell on that city and surrounding areas like a tidal wave because of the move of God that fell on that small group of Catholic students up north in the late 60’s (I can’t remember the college name maybe Notre Dame). I had a friend who took me to my first charismatic meeting in 1973. Back then they were held in the priest rectory. I didn’t totally understand what was happening but it was beautiful. Just a handful of people singing and praying and sharing. I never experienced anything wild or emotional ever at any meeting. It took me a whole year to pray and study about it. I remember reading Pat Boon’s book A New Song about he and his family’s experience with the Baptism of the Holy Spirit. But When I read the book of Acts about how the Holy Spirit fell upon the 120 souls in the upper room at Pentecost and this is the kicker that Mary, the blessed Mother was there and received the Holy Spirit with the evidence of speaking in tongues I was sold. By that time, a year latter, they held the meetings in the church and every Friday evening a city wide prayer meeting was held at Loyola University and nuns and priests and Catholics packed out the students auditorium. Mass was the most beautiful powerful God filled holy presence that was tangible and visible like a smoke filled the place and was heaven on earth. Most joyous. Everything came alive and reading the Bible all made sense. Seek the Baptism in the Holy Spirit and evidence of tongues. Tongues is a supernatural gift the Holy Spirit gives that is a powerful prayer language and the Holy Spirit prays God’s perfect Will through us. You life your walk will be taken to new life in Him. ❀

I couldn’t go to church as a child but have always had the love and direction of the Holy Spirit in my life as I was baptized Catholic as a baby. As an adult attending Mass the whole Trinity is present and there’s not a moment that’s not exciting and filled with the sacred. In experiences with the Holy Spirit I have learned that there needs to be both deep solemn worship of the Lord Jesus and then the joy and happiness that is experienced as children of God.

as a new convert, what drew me to the catholic church was traditional, traditional morals and history of teaching spanning 1000s of years. It tires me living in a world that praises new, modern, ,move on, forget the past, experiment, do it different. The church service is a time for me to concentrate on one thing, it then allows me to sort out all the other things in the crazy world. I loved dance music as a kid but dont want that being played while i concentrate on the one simple thing. im afraid Dr Mary this sounds like a new church, I want the old to keep me focused as the new world made me loose my focus.

My parents who love latin mass, and rightly done novus ordo, spent 2 decades having their faith set on fire through the Charismatic Renewal whose effects in instilling faith like at Pentecost where the Mother of God and all Apostels were present at the Church's first meeting (how more trad than that?) are unmatched - know them by their fruits. CR continues to do that work of the first meeting, setting faith on fire, and vast majority interestingly! come out passionate about the Church's teachings and very open to latin mass, tradition, etc. i.e. because the Holy Spirit is present there with real power, i.e. God in the Church doing His work for a renewed Church, saving souls. Very serious stuff, not to be easily dismissed, at least not with intellectual honesty.

Devout in how they give, faithful to the Magisterium, feeding the poor, rejecting contraception, often attending the Latin Mass in the area as well. I appreciated this discussion. As a former protestant, who was exposed to the protestant version of the charismatic renewal on a regular basis, I would only share similar concerns as I might to any movement within the church in regards to guarding against excesses. And just as I consider myself a traditionalist, but find many of excesses in the rad-trad camp problematic, I am sure the same exists in the charismatic renewal. As a protestant, seeing a certain giving into emotionalism, performance, false or pretended gifts, etc. But otherwise, within the proper bounds of the Church, their is room for this movement as well, and the Spirit has worked through them to the good.
One particular point of concern is in the understanding of the gifts. I'm not sure how it is in the Catholic Charismatic Movement, but in the protestant, everyone claimed to exercise any manner of gift from healing, to tongues, to prophesy. Where the scriptures are very clear, that the Lord distributes the gifts as He sees fit, that there is need of every member of the body. To the effect that not just anyone can prophesy, or speak in tongues. This is one aspect of Charismatic belief that I found troubling and doctrinally erroneous.

    • @purgatorean
      @purgatorean Pƙed 2 lety

Catholic Charismatic Renewal is loaded with phonies and theatrical gimmicks, which is why there is no place for this in the Mass. Go do this stuff in someone else's house but not the Lord's house. There is nothing sacred about it, and tends to divide more than unite.

I grew up in a community very influenced by charismatic theology. I was never able to feel the way they say I was supposed to, or let loose in worship the way they say I was supposed to. As a result, for years I avoided thinking about faith because every time I did I despaired because I thought I wasn’t good enough. It wasn’t until I dived into other theological traditions that I was able to feel spiritually fulfilled. Charismaticism is fine for those with the right disposition I suppose, but it was only ever damaging to me.

that's a very honest story, and i find your view perfectly ok and valid. But i think some in the movement are immature, so if they said you had to feel something (a misunderstanding possible in a movement that includes emotion though not exclusively), then they didn't need to say that to you. the more mature would have said, "you are good enough, and fine in your very honest reactions". meantime, God seems to be moving here in some people's lives... i'm sorry for you in that expericene, i hear you, i respect it greatly. but keep a door open if you ever feel like trying another group, but be cool, don't expect much. maybe just celebrate some people benefit and come to Christ there... you're awesome, man!

My experience with a community was 40 years ago. But that doesn't invalidate my experience and it doesn't automatically assume that the same things may not be going on today. I never received the gift of tongues, and was made to feel "less than". The leader of the Life In The Spirit Seminar asked who wasn't speaking in tongues. Some of us raised our hands, and we were "rebaptized" in the Spirit. I also noticed that when I did "speak in tongues", I was actually just imitating the leader. If I had stood there and said nothing, I don't know what would have happened! I would be careful. I have heard stories of people who knew Latin and were listening to some of the utterances that were coming out of someone's mouth. The people who were speaking in Latin were profaning God. We are to test the spirits, but even the fortune tellers say that they need to be careful that the wrong spirits don't get a foothold in.
One more thing: I have heard about training people to manifest the gifts of the spirit. I have to agree with one of the posters here. Very dangerous. That's what the new agers do. The bible and the church clearly state that we are not to do that! God is the one who chooses what gifts He will bestow upon us, not us!

Can I ask what it means to add the charismatic renewal to the Mass? I’m of the opinion that it shouldn’t be added at all, as the Mass is, well, the Mass, and it’s inappropriate to make changes. So I’d be interested to know what exactly you mean by that. :)

@@liviagracie1443I know this is a rather old question, but I thought I'd answer because it's important. I too am a former member and deeply love this parish (I entered the Church and was married there, but then God called us to move out of state).
The Charismatic renewal isn't "added" to the Mass, but, as Martha said, integrated. The liturgy is not changed (and often the original Latin/Greek words are used for Mass parts), but there is greater participative reverence by the lay people: they actually sing for starter! the corporate Mass parts are truly their own "Kyrie - Lord have mercy" - is truly penitential, while the "Gloria" is a joyful acclimation of praise.
The Eucharist is reverenced deeply; the true Presence on the altar is adored from the moment of consecration throughout the duration, with appropriate postures of adoration to the King.
There may be certain physical postures that people take as they participate in the Mass parts that encourage participation. For example, a bowed head and hands held out for the Kyrie, or joyful hands raised for the Gloria or great Amen. These are simply outward signs of inward expression.
In addition, outside of Mass (at least in the past) they have had wonderful prayer meetings, healing ministries, courses on deepening your spiritual life (Doctors of the Church, etc.)

The separation between “science” and “passion” in our cultural is the direct effect of Cartesian Dualism. RenĂ© Descartes popularized the view that the mind and the body are separate entities, such that their activities have no significant bearing upon the other. Think “ghost in the machine”. The Catholic Church rightly teaches that the body and mind (soul) are harmoniously interconnected and interdependent, holding that the activities of the body affect the soul and the activities of the soul affect the body.

I'm new to the Catholic understanding, and a lot of things seem really compelling at the core of church teaching, but it's disheartening on the ground when you see Catholics afraid that Satan is going to possess them through the use of drums. I say that tongue and cheek, please don't be offended. But isn't it clear to us by now that Jesus isn't concerned with these trivial things, but rather with the heart? The letter of the law kills when applied on it's own by means of human strength. That's not to say, "All tradition is harmful". No. To say so would be just another legalistic dogma. Tradition can be a beautiful way to preserve that which is sacred for future generations to experience. EMPTY tradition is harmful, because it quenches the spirit and sucks the life out of you. This is a big roadblock holding me back from the Catholic church at present, simply because it makes me sad that the people claiming to be the True Church can simultaneously have such a low resolution understanding of God.

I think Dr. Healy is very right to point out that if the Church does not connect us with our hearts then we will look for that connection elsewhere. I make this connection to Protestants regarding religious imagery. If the Church abandons its claim on the senses then the void will be filled by the world.
With that said, I agree with Matt that charismatic services objectively sacrifice reverence for emotion. If there is a place where the heart and the mind come together then that must be a significant mark in its favor. The reaction of St. Vladimir’s emissaries to the Divine Liturgy is the best story of the effect of such harmony on the whole person. There is no need to err too much on the side of reverence or emotionalism. The balance has already been struck and crafted by God Himself. I’m aware of many young people who wept at their first Liturgy, I’m one of them. I have even met people who cry at almost every Liturgy I have seen them at.
It is not true that the only evidence one ought to consider when discerning the question of which is the true Church is that for and against the Papacy. One would expect that if their is still a Divine/human institution present on earth then most of the conversions would resemble those of the NT and that it would combine reverence and depth of feeling in its worship.

St Augustine said: “Just because nowadays those who are being baptized in Christ and who believe in Christ do not speak in the languages of all nations, is it to be assumed that they have not received the Holy Spirit? No such lack of faith should tempt our heart. We are certain that everyone receives him” - Since then he is received nowadays too, somebody may say, “why is no one speaking in the languages of all nations?” Because now the Church speaks in the languages of all peoples. Previously the Church was to be found in one people, when it was speaking in the languages of all. By speaking with the languages of all it was signifying what was going to happen, that by growing among peoples, it would speak everyone’s language.”
God no longer needed to give the gift of tongues because the Church now speaks in all languages.

And I'm a Catholic who takes interest in learning my faith. Let's face it, in general, Catholics are poorly formed. Catholic education hasn't helped. I love tradition, it's rigidity and structure because I know when we pray, when we sing, when we worship liturgically and also in community the prayers and songs are objectively sound in theology, no risk of heresy. The prayers were written by theologians, they were written by the saints. Therefore, I can then let my defenses down and open my heart and worship God knowing the prayers are not heretical. When she was praying I tried to get into it and open my heart but I was on guard listening to see if she would pray heretically. I did not feel the Holy Spirit rather I felt defensive. Hello everyone! I am definitely a "traditional" catholic, including preferring reverent music during mass and Christian Rap on my own time... However my wife I are currently attending the "Life in the Spirit" seminar. WOWIEE the Holy Spirit is alive in us like never before. It is changing the way we understand and see everything. We really feel like the Holy Spirit is transforming our lives like never before and we cannot understand why the "Life in the Spirit" seminar isn't advertised more within the Church. I really think "Charismatic" and "Traditional" Catholics are both traditional and complimentary.
What we have learned specifically from life in the spirit that kind of went past our heads beforehand was:
    1) We need to have faith FIRST before the Bible makes sense. I always assumed it has to do with your literacy or intelligence. It is the Holy Spirit that is inspiring our thoughts. (The testimonies we hear from people in our seminar have helped increase our faith)
    2) Sin is suffocating the Holy Spirit working within us. Once we have an honest confession and turn from sin the Holy Spirit is able to grow within us. We just have to let it grow and not fight the transformation. (We often think we know better than God so we resist.)
    3) The gifts Jesus Christ gave to us have already been given through Baptism, we simply need to accept and use them.
    4) It is a lot simpler than we think and we over complicate things. We need to think reasonably and faithfully to understand.
We are going to grow the one true Catholic Church by making individual relationships with people one person at a time just as the early church did. We need to use every opportunity we can and listen for the Holy Spirit to prompt us into having conversations with people. Wearing a cross around my neck and giving people a simple nod is enough for some people to start talking to you. Follow the Holy Spirit where the conversation takes you.

When the holy spirit speaks it speaks Absolutely right, the church has always been charismatic and how typical of God to begin this century with those of our family who were fractured from us.. personally I find this incredibly beautiful 🙏🙏

It's one thing to believe miraculous healings are real or even common. It's another to believe they are an "on call" power to be expected anytime one asks for it.
The Church believes in prophecy but condemns divination. What's the difference? It is not that divination is always false. Exorcists confirm that demons access the foolish through Tarot, Ouija, and other occult practices and demons can certainly perform supernatural feats. The difference is that prophecy occurs at God's inititiation for God's own purposes, whereas divination attempts to control the spirits or claim supernatural powers for oneself.
If a saint can regularly perform miraculous healings, it is because that saint is exceptionally receptive to the Lord's will. He or she knows when God offers a cure and when He will answer prayers in a hidden way.
I have known very faithful people who had experience of healings, had confidence that the Lord would answer, and yet did not apparently heal the person they prayed over. That's fine. The Lord is good and surely answered in another way.
I sympathize with the Charismatic Renewal in that the Lord does indeed continue to accompany His teachings and with signs and wonders, including the sacraments. We should ask and expect more from our loving Lord. But this on-call view of healings seems as false and reckless to me as Herbeck's claim that the gift of tongues is an on-call personal prayer language, rather than an occasionally inspired ability to communicate clearly across boundaries.
We should ask the Lord for help with expectation of a response, but not presume to know the Lord's will apart from inspiration. His miracles are for His plan and not for ours.

I don't think Dr. Healey said anything about "on-call" healing, but to your point about tongues I think Paul does give indication that tongues is not an uncommon phenomenon, but something so regular that he says he desires that everyone pray in tongues but even more that they would prophesy. Seems to indicate it being a pretty common reality. Herbeck is spot on in my experience. I'd invite you to go to a Life in the Spirit Seminar and see what the Lord reveals.

@@T_dog1 All due respect to the Angelic Doctor, we know Thomas Aquinas is not infallible(e.g., the Immaculate Conception). I'll have to get back with you on the Church Fathers point, with specifics, but Aquinas does take something of a cessationist stance on Tongues, which is not in line with Church teaching about the Charismatic gifts, but rather a Protestant perspective.

"On call" healings are not the belief or practice of (orthodox) charismatic Catholic circles. I've spent the last 5 years in a charismatic community and while this may be a first impression, it quickly became clear to me that these small miracles are not something that God gives just because you want them. They're not even really gifts *for you:* rather, they are given when they lead to greater glory for God and conversion. Think of the Acts of the Apostles: all of the signs and wonders performed at that time were always for the advancement of the Kingdom, and those who would try to wield that power pridefully (like the Jewish exorcists that Dr. Healy mentioned in this interview) were met with disappointment.
As I continue to grow in my faith and see the charismatic and traditional communities that I'm a part of, it frequently astounds me how despite the differences in expression, the underlying orthodoxy is the same.

@@T_dog1 That's like saying that there is no orthodox monasticism, since the "monastic movement" had a beginning. Furthermore, given the photo on your profile, I have to ask, do you believe that Vatican II and the Novus Ordo are valid? SSPX is not an authoritative representative of authentic Church teaching. If your response to that is that the Charismatic Movement is not authoritative either. I am not claiming that, I am claiming that the charismatic nature of the Church has been affirmed again and again by recent Popes and that does bears the weight of authoritative representation. Beyond that, I would never advocate for joining a "movement." I think the use of the term movement denotes a subjective reality rather that acknowledging the Charismatic nature of the Church and inviting people to join themselves to the Holy Spirit, the "Mover." Also, to be clear, none of this is intended to call into question the validity, beauty, etc, of the TLM. My charismatic pastor has an affection for the TLM and celebrated it as his first mass. Trevor, I pray that as you grow in the experience of God's grace that you come to know the person of the Holy Spirit.
