Historic result as Sinn Féin becomes North's largest Westminster party

  • Sinn Féin have emerged as Northern Ireland’s largest party at a Westminister level for the first time.
With only the safe DUP seat of East Derry left to declare, Sinn Féin has won seven seats, the DUP four, the SDLP two, while the UUP, TUV and Alliance have all won one each; an independent unionist has also won in North Down.
The historic result comes two years after Sinn Féin won the most seats in the Stormont Assembly.
The republican party comfortably held its two most marginal seats; in Fermanagh and South Tyrone, the Sinn Féin majority soared from 57 votes over the UUP to 4,571.
In Belfast North, the party’s majority over the DUP increased from 1,943 to 5,612.
There was also a strong swing to the party in Foyle, where SDLP leader Colm Eastwood saw his majority tumble from 17,110 to 4,166.
"You endorsed Sinn Féin candidates who will work hard for you every day and lead positive change for everyone," First Minister Michelle O'Neill tweeted.
"We will continue to work for all, striving to build a brighter and better future for workers and families."
The DUP, which won eight seats in 2019, has lost Lagan Valley to the Alliance, South Antrim to the UUP and - most sensationally of all - Ian Paisley Jnr has been defeated in North Antrim by the TUV.
In Belfast East, Party leader Gavin Robinson held off a strong challenge from the Alliance’s Naomi Long, while former DUP MLA Alex Easton won in North Down as an independent.

Gregory Campbell DUP held on to his seat by the slim margin of 180 votes in what was always a strong Unionist constituency , his winning speech was realistic and conciliatory, he knows time is not on the side of Unionists in Northern Ireland and for the union within the UK to survive unionists must appeal more to Catholics, apart from the border issue the DUP policies are not that out of step with traditional Catholic values and even though Sinn Fein are increasing their vote everywhere that has more to do with voting along tribal lines than a wish to see a united Ireland any time soon if ever, apart from SF party members no one in Derry that I know ever talks about it and I’d doubt if it’s in their top 50 concerns.
Many Republicans say the Republic is not the same place that they would have fought to rejoin during the Troubles , the current government in Dublin is more beholding to the EU than it’s own citizens, the open borders has caused a huge change in demographics, there’s a severe lack of affordable housing, healthcare or even finding a doctor which also cost money for each appointment, as a former Republican activist like many of my old comrades I certainly wouldn’t be voting for a united Ireland, it’s really incumbent on every citizen of Northern Ireland to make this place a better place for our children and grandchildren and forget about the south , that train has already left the station. I’d gladly work with any unionist willing to make an honest effort to make Northern Ireland a more wonderful place to live .

Distortion , propaganda , essentially just tripe , in reality the Northern Ireland political situation has not changed in any meaningful way , the Unionists parties collectively , ( which includes Alliance) , still poll collectively approximately 60% of the vote . All Sinn Fien has done is syphoned votes from the SDLP their overall vote has changed very little . Most of the Alliance votes come from the unionists population . If you look at the who was elected to UK Parliament SF , SDLP, ALLIANCE remains the same, the Unionist party’s have the same number of seats , the only change is that instead of a DUP unionist it’s a more broadly unionist representation, cause by the DUP capitulation to Sunak , returning to Stormont , and Donaldson’s fall from Grace. What is being ignored is the collapse of the Irish nationalist birth rate in the North which now stands at 1.47 approximately, which is well below replacement. In short Irish nationalism in the North is in a stalemate situation with a reducing population. The only way they can have any sway over power is to contrive a coalition with Alliance which is constitutionally unionist. If you choose to delete this or ignore then it’s reality no me you have a problem with.

@@golaglanman860 There's a relationship with Great Britian and Northern Ireland militarily. We saw this in the second world war. If Ireland is reunited we need to adjust the military spend. Neutrality without adequate defense in the face of Russian aggression is not an option.

Ireland is already in the NATO Partnership for Peace Program - Ireland is NOT Neutral - we are however, Non-Aligned.
The USSR landed in Shannon during the Cold War - currently the US Air Force are landing there.
