  • Professor Dr. Carsten Finke reports on his study which presents comprehensive longitudinal data for the cognitive outcome in anti-NMDAr encephalitis. Prior to this study, patients were followed for 2 years with a focus on neurological outcomes reporting an 80% full recovery. This research follows patients for over 4 years with a focus on their executive functioning/cognitive abilities. Some date presented tracked out 9 years. The difference in neurological outcomes and cognitive outcomes are striking. This presentation points out lasting deficits and problematic issues around quality of life. Detailed lists of circumstances where more positive cognitive outcomes are seen are provided side-by-side with the circumstances where poorer outcomes are seen.
Throughout his presentation Dr. Finke provides helpful visuals to illuminate findings. His positive take away is that improvement has been shown to continue over many years, although slowly. The insights he provides will help patients, caregivers and families have more understanding into what to expect on their AE journey.
A 30 minute Question & Answer period follows his 30 minute presentation.
Professor Dr. Carsten Finke, is Heisenberg Professor for Cognitive Neurology and Attending Neurologist at the Department of Neurology at Charité University Medicine, Berlin & Berlin School of Mind and Brain
He is Group leader of the Cognition in neurological Disorders Group whose
research focuses on the clinical and cognitive neuroscience of memory and memory disorders. And are specifically interested in the pathophysiology of memory deficits in patients with inflammatory brain disorders affecting the medial temporal lobes, including viral and autoimmune encephalitis and patients with paraneoplastic neurological syndromes. Their research aims to develop diagnostic and prognostic imaging biomarkers.
The International Autoimmune Encephalitis Society, (IAES), is the only Family/Patient-centered organization for people with a diagnosis of Autoimmune Encephalitis. Leading with integrity, IAES strives to advance services, education, increased awareness and research for this group of diseases. IAES provides science-based information backed by trusted medical experts in the field of autoimmune neurology and relies on the expertise of our Medical Advisory Board. We are an established non-profit organization with a history of supporting all-inclusive services from diagnosis to recovery and the many challenges experienced in that journey.
