  • I found a species of darkling beetle at this spot a few months ago. I was meaning to do some actual field herping videos and I thought this species was neat so I thought I'd show you how I found them and the habitat they like. Looks like they are a species of Cibdelis, but no clue on how to identify the species.
If you'd like to see more field herping stuff let me know.

Very nice video, fun to watch people out bugging! 😁 BTW, all those holes on that tree at 17:24? Woodpecker holes I'm pretty sure. 😄

Yeah I thought as much. But I imagine the grubs they're going after are these darkling beetles. Hardly anything else to eat out here.

@@elcastro5000 I mean there's gotta be some of these up there for sure, but there are also all sorts of Buprestid and Cerambycids that bore into dead wood on standing trees, both of which are common food items for woodpeckers. Also, the larvae in this specific tribe of darkling beetle seem to supplement their wood based diets with protein from other beetle larvae, so there's gotta be other beetles there too that they're gonna be feeding on.

Hey I don’t mean to be a creep, but I also live in the bay area and I would definitely like to know where the good spots to find cool stuff are, really any advice or information would be very useful to me!!
