Wacaday - Timmy Mallet and Michaela Strachan (1989)

  • I can't tell you how excited I was to find this at the end of a VHS tape! The evidence suggests it's from the summer of 1989 (possibly Thursday 3rd August), and the icing on the cake is that as well as the inimitable Timmy Mallet, this episode of Wacaday is co-presented by Michaela Strachan. Utterly, utterly brilliant.
Sadly, the first half has been recorded over, so no Mallet's Mallet, but you get a good taste of what the show was like at this point in its history. There are features such as Wactors and Wactresses, the Won Ton Soup phone-in, and of course Wac Snaps (set to Bros's latest masterpiece, no less) at the end. I've left in the adverts as broadcast for the full retro flavour.
The theme of these particular hols seems to have been Thailand (hence all the ties: TIE-land... Geddit?) It's actually a lot more educational than I remembered, and to my surprise, Timmy treats the Buddhist temples with suitable solemnity in his report.
At the very beginning, you get a brief glimpse of a US cartoon called Galaxy High. I have absolutely no memory of this whatsoever, but there was about a minute's worth on this tape (which I snipped because it's available on DVD), and one of the characters clearly had the voice of Bart Simpson. Made me chuckle, anyway.
(Please remember that this is an off-air VHS recording, so don't go expecting 1080p HD quality. I'm fairly certain that this video isn't commercially available, and I've uploaded it for its historic interest only. That said, if you are a copyright holder and object, please don't hesitate to contact me.)

Has there ever been a lovelier, more wholesome female presenter than Michaela?

Can't be the only one here who used to think Elton John and Timmy Mallett were the same people...

I could never watch this when my dad was around, he hated Timmy Mallet but I think he’ll agree that it’s better than the crap kids watch today.

And like all the best kids' TV shows, when in its prime loads of "concerned parents" tried to ban Wacaday. Looking at it today through adult eyes, I can barely believe just how, well, *wholesome* the show was. Plenty of silliness, of course, but it's nowhere near as randomly redundant as much of what gets shown these days.

(It's a real pity that the recording only cut in halfway through - sorry about that. Here's hoping the full episode will show up one day!)
