    Airplay didn’t work because the network he was connected to across the VPN is in a different vlan, which means it is in a completely different broadcast domain. AirPlay relies on “Bonjour” an Apple discovery protocol that used link local mDNS (multicast) addresses that are only available on the local L2 domain.

    • @Jacobhopkins117
      @Jacobhopkins117 Před 6 lety +5

      A+ explanation. I believe Spotify Connect will work over the internet regardless (depending on how relaxed firewall rules are set up). I've accidentally played music from work on my home stereo with Spotify Connect several times.

    • @tomshelton937
      @tomshelton937 Před 6 lety +2

      This could be a L2 VPN though... In which case airplay could work...

    • @MGB72UK
      @MGB72UK Před 6 lety +2

      Yeah, not a different 'VLAN' as such but it would appear that as you've said he's on a different broadcast domain so the broadcast looking for the Apple TV never reached it. Honestly I only watched this video because I was betting that it wasn't a layer 2 VPN 😂.

    • @jameswebb1327
      @jameswebb1327 Před 6 lety

      If you run your own VPN you could add a mDNS discovery daemon such as Avahi. You can then set this on both the VPN interface and the LAN interface, then casting from the VPN should work.

    Course you can connect to Apple TV's through a VPN if you set it up correctly in the 1st place.. Is this ment to be a tech channel, and you dont know what you can and cant connect to via a VPN?

      Like who would pay 150$ for a simple VPN tunnel? Also "setting up an VPN is hard", nowadays every modem has simple web interface and you can get the vpn rolling in 5 clicks. Turn the vpn on, enable encryption, download the profile/certificate, import the profile/certificate to the device your want to connect with and you done...

    Question!! This thing needs to be connected to an internet source in order to work so why not just hook whatever device you wanna use to there internet that's already there instead of using this? Is there a way to take your home Wi-Fi with you but don't need another internet source like camping or fishing not being near any internet access.

    If course as I am sure you know you may or may not be able to see Netflix in the second country you visit depending on the quality if the VPN .Not all VPN s are created alike and not all allow you to see all content .I wonder why I would use this type of system and not a good VPN like Nord or something similar .What advantage do you have here ? Other VPNs are continually being updated and probably don't cost as much as the teleporter .Also while I haven't used the specific mesh system you are using ,they are usually quite expensive and I do have one and gave had comparable results by using a decent router and optimizing it's location in the house .Thanks for the interesting clip .
    Cheers .

    Seems stupidly expensive in my opinion. If you used a nas or something, then fine, it's sort of practical, but otherwise, what's the point? Whenever I'm out and about, my main gripe is the speed of the internet, and with a slow internet connection, going through any sort of vpn, you're going to get slow and inconsistant connections.

    • @12mujtaba12
      @12mujtaba12 Před 6 lety +1

      Eggplant most nas drives have external access anyway? So it’s not even needed

    • @ShawnBuckingham
      @ShawnBuckingham Před 6 lety

      That's true, but while you could be out at a public wifi spot, being able to connect through a vpn to your nas would make it more safe, as opposed to directly connecting to the nas, through the wifi hotspot. To be honest, I'm not sure what sort of security modern nas's offer nowadays

    • @12mujtaba12
      @12mujtaba12 Před 6 lety

      Some nas drives do have ssl connections etc and they also can act as a vpn. Data migration is supposed to be encrypted. So who knows I’m no expert

    • @ShawnBuckingham
      @ShawnBuckingham Před 6 lety

      Didn't know that some nas's act as a vpn, i'll have to add that to my list of things to research :) In that case, this product seems a bit mundane/not really needed. I mean, it looks cool and all, but at the end of the day, it's just a router which is designed to be put near a phone line, and not to look good. Even smartlights nowadays can be controlled through a different internet connections
