Will say, out of the Messmerflame incantations Fire Serpent is the clear winner. The range is poor, but I've never had that thing miss *once* (excluding i-frames). Orb would be a high B tier if it had any form of hyper-armor (but it doesn't), and Rain of Fire is (*hopefully*) bugged.
Fire Serpent is amazing in PvP at the bare minimum, all you need is Fire Serpent and Catch Flame and you have an amazing set of tools for pressuring your opponent. Throw out a Fire Serpent or two while approaching your target then chase them down with running Catch Flames, they _need_ to roll to avoid the Fire Serpent as it can't be strafed, and the delay makes it a wonderful frame trapping tool similar to Magic Glintblade which grants you a perfect opportunity to catch their roll with, well, Catch Flame, they can't dodge both if timed properly. Even perfect roll discipline won't help in this situation, they'll need something like Bloodhound Step for extra distance and i-frames to reliably escape, or a very unstable connection.
Honestly, it's easier to list the DLC incantations which are alright, than the ones which suck. Like, 90% of the DLC incantations genuinely hit for basically no damage, have too long of a delay, or lack poise. On top of that, most have absurdly higher stat requirements than they ever should. Like, as it is currently, if Rain of Fire doesn't get a colossal damage buff, the stat requirement should be lowered to 8 Faith. That sounds extreme, but each fire blast does damage equal to a barehanded punch. If they want these spells to be garbage, at least stat the requirements like they're garbage.

And it's Fire damage, meaning it'll do even less while in the rain and/or while standing in water. Also, it takes longer to cast than Founding Rain of Stars if you want to use the uncharged version, which at least shares it's "quick casting animation" with other generic sorceries like Magic Glintblade or Starlight, whereas RoF for some reason uses the very slow and clunky "Fire Storm" casting animation, even though it doesn't even really make much sense for you to slam fire into the ground to make smoke clouds in the sky, really should have been something like waving both arms around while smoke spews from them, perhaps taking inspiration for the animation of Uplifting Aromatic? Ranged attacks with high poise damage are the most broken things possible in the game. Btw. smithscript weapons were apparently much stronger on the review version, they nerfed the reach hard on release, and also prevented the use of buffs like Royal Knight's Resolve.
@@lharsay Yeah, I really enjoyed messing around with the Smithscript Dagger despite recognizing its weakness, and it was pretty clear if it was much stronger in any respect-range, raw damage, poise damage, status buildup-it would very quickly border on overpowered. The only thing I really wanted them to improve was accuracy, particularly the grounded R2 being so buckwild off-target, but buffing anything else I thought might break it. xD

@@rickchamp1725 It's definitely better at some things. Raw damage output, almost certainly. Can you kite with that, though? You have to plant your feet and chuck it. If you could be jumping backwards and throw the spectral lance in the air, it'd for sure be better all around.
Another great video! Man, I really hope they buff the rain of fire spell, because it's so bad it has to be a bug. It can't even kill the basic shadow guys in the dlc.
I think the way spears are supposed to get over the hurdle of poise damage is being pierce damage so they get extra damage and poise damage while counter-attacking, and guard-countering with a shield, which goes well with them since you can attack while blocking with a shield, unlike with great hammers. So it takes longer to get there, but is safer.
Counter damage only works with physical attack. Messmer's Spear is more Fire than Physical so you don't get much out of counterattacking. Also, its guard counter is nothing to write home about, so I much prefer being aggressive with its powerstance attacks.
Awesome info! I wonder if you'd be interested in looking at the revised Quality scaling that came with the DLC patches also, I gave it a cursory look on a dex build and it seemed to out-do Keen when I had just a few points in strength, at least on the Dueling Shield. Could be that swords and the like will now be stronger on quality than keen or heavy.
At level 200 you are running a very similar build to what I am for Messmer's spear. I opted not to powerstance however and focused on using the spear as a ranged, FP-less attack that can soften opponents health bars as they approach or knock flying enemies out of the sky. The Axe talisman also seemed to buff the throwing spear attacks, but I could be mistaken. The first swing of the ash of war has a stun effect on most enemies allowing the combo to fully land more often than not while the actual movement of the ash of war can enable you to either dodge some attacks through jank or poise right through them. I very much liked running shard of alexander for the build if I'm focusing on only the ash of war but also the flame boosting tear for extra damage on the ash of war. Speaking strictly for PVE, Pest's thread spears was an unrivaled addition to a FTH build's arsenal as it's damage just cannot be matched when used on larger opponents, so I used the Erd tree's seal in my off hand, the Godfrey Icon (interchangeable with alexander's shard based on the situation) and Flock's canvas talisman for spell damage, and Dragon's great shield talisman and the crimson seed +1 talisman. The build as a whole doesn't bolster the actual spear a whole lot, but I think it has enough use as a mid-range poking tool and ash of war beating stick to safely compliment a FTH build with specialized spells for whatever you find yourself fighting. Digressing, was there an issue with power stancing two Messmer's spears? I feel like you would get more damage out of just physical and fire damage for the powerstanced attacks than three-way split damage with the barbed staff-spear.
Using a shield and/or deflect tear to go for guard counters when using it 1h or 2h is pretty viable to do poise damage. It gets the regular greatspear guard counter.
Not sure this is of interest but, you can change the AOW for the obsidian lamina by equipping an infusible scythe in off had and using its AOE by 2 handing it. The follow up on OL dynastic sickle play will change to spinning slash.
Thank you for the lvl 200 stat distribution, I like doing coop at that level so the usual 150 and 125 stat distributions arent as useful for me as the 200.
You can stack the two headed turtle with the greenburst tear and the great turtle shell shield offhand/on back and the stamina regen goes crazy! It feels like it refils as you're using it then refils immediately when not

A benefit of the treespear is that you can use its ash of war and then go back to dual weilding for a 10% damage buff. Sacred order works on your main hand if you are dualweilding.
Personally I think vykes war spear is a great option to power stance with spear of the impaler as you get to higher levels where you’ll have more Dex and 18 str requirement.

The throw has some utility and I want to shy away from calling a spade a spade insofar as calling it a gimmick goes- but I would love a sweeping attack on this thing that isn't the weapon art! Maybe too much to ask tho

A breakdown of the Black Steel Greathammer could be cool, I think it's description caused misunderstandings. "Blessed with an Erdtree incantation. Further holy imbuement will amplify the effect and greatly increase the armament's power." Some say that sacred infusions are even better, others that Sacred Blade is stronger on this weapon and I say that it just means that the holy damage that is already there gets stronger. From my testing, it seems that sacred infusions increase the holy burst damage of the guard counter.
Small request for a black hammer/shield optimization video Chrighttsama. Or the actual numbers for Deflect Tear. Time till perfect deflect, does the first deflect keep stacking the buff to 80% guard counter dmg if youre just holding, dmg and stanina negation amount per weapon/shield types.
Okay, someone requested a crystal tear video so I will make Deflect Tear effect clear over there. It's pretty complicated but it does not stack like Youwy suggests (I believe I got the right person who made the video? Other people have asked similar questions about that crystal tear tier list which is kinda all over the place).
I use this with the normal beast claws with bleed infusion. Would recommend leda’s chest piece, laceration tailsman, briar gauntlets since they proc while moving around during both of the weapons attacks, divine bird legs for stomping aow’s and/or fashion, two hand tailsman, throwing tailsman & horseback tailsmans while using torrent, and if you want alternative headgear for beast claws go for white mask or divine beast head/helm for fashion.
i know you are focusing on new weapons and stuff rn, but i would love a Godslayer Greatsword video at some point since they finally fixed the bugged weapon art poise. Such a cool weapon, moveset and weapon art
I gonna be honest, i do prefer making a incantation build with messmer helmet and knight armor with the lance than just focusing around it. In pvp and pve cenarios i just get better versatility and can use Fire snake with weasome buffs, out scalling godslayer and having distance damage. + even high poise builds will be interrupted in the combos, becoming just a slap bag
It might be MP inefficient but I found some success just skipping the final sequence of the ash every time because after the triple slash you regain control of your character pretty quickly but the recovery time before you can roll or start a new skill sequence after finishing the spear graveyard is brutal. It seemed efficient from the perspective of damage per time spent because you can rapidly chain sequences 1 and 2 quickly but the recovery time after the final sequence hits the enemy is very long.
I tried so hard to make a thematic build but focusing on faith for the AOW and then using incantations left me with a great spear with its slow moveset and horrible damage, I hadn't thought of powerstancing with a faith scaling weapon
@@nxvh9062honestly your going to overlevel, it’s not more of a build but more of having eveything. High NG+ cycles do require this to compensate on the damage you take but base game or low Ng+ is over kill and can ruin the game for some
its incredible how badly the vagabond outshines the other classes for optimizing most builds, I'm currently planning a FAITH INT build and its still somehow the best class for it
I realize it isn’t optimal but my favorite way to use it is with the smithscript talisman and the axe talisman. It’s a bit absurd that it takes most of your stamina though.
Kinda unfortunate how these throwing attacks are implemented. Would you trade heavy attacks, and all the poise damage that could come with it, for a low range poise damageless projectile poke? The one up side is not costing fp
Would be awesome, esp considering that the Rakshasha has unique poise that can allow it to go toe to toe with Greatswords. I'd also love to see just a great katana breakdown that shows building the various ones (esp the Great Katana itself) for different builds (int-based, dex/lightning, arcane/bleed etc.)
Very insightful! I've been struggling to optimize a dragon communion build, but I can't find a decent weapon. The closest I can get is giant hunt or spectral lance on a short spear, bleed infusion is available (and likely optimal) for both, but occult is more on theme. Only downside is no dragonwound grease, since neither infusion is buffable. And you can't sell me on that abomination from the dlc, that thing is specifically designed for a dragon cult/communion hybrid build.

With the DLC making the game playthroughs much longer, more people now tend to stop their builds at lvl 200 instead of 150. It might seem redundant, but it would be really appreciated if build videos in the future also touched on.
Messmer's Spear might be my favorite Remembrance weapon so far. It's 1/1 the spear he uses combat-wise. I shredded Romina on my second try because of its AoW.
I found Messmer's Assault to be a great way to disrupt two of the Peskier NPCs in the Grand Melee near the end. While it's a shame the Throw attack is so weak, it IS fun to harass enemies from horseback with it.
This spear was disappointing to me when I tried it. Wish the ash of war was just the 3 quick thrusts rather than the whole combo with no hyper armor. Also the heavy being a throwing attack is just disappointing damage. would rather have just the regular heavy attack. Underwhelming in every way.
Having dual fire weapons (Flame art Messmer Soldier's spear) would allow you to buff both with the fire tear, oil tear and flame grant me strength. Don't need the stamina tear when you can swap Shard of alexander out against bosses, you're not going to get much weapon arts out against bosses
I wouldn't run fire crystal tear either way. It isn't worth it cause you have so much physical in your build. The oil tear is mid at best. Flame Grant Me Strength is probably the best argument for full fire but greater barriers > FGMS. Still, if you prefer FGMS that's the best reason to run a flame infused spear which you can do with spare points. Not using Shard of Alexander already so nothing to swap out for bosses lol. You do you but stam tear feels the best for me on PSGS.
I don't understand why they're so afraid to let the smithscript weapons throws be good. There's already so many other stronger ranged attacks in the game.
Any plans to do a deep dive into Poleblade Of The Bud? I feel like it's getting slept on because of the lack of hyper armour on the ash of war, which is a shame because it's a remarkably fun weapon.
This weapon will probably wait until the first balance patch as I've got things lined up and they probably forgot a lot of hyper armor on flying skills rather than intentionally leaving hyper armor out.
Honestly, I don't care if the throws have damage drop off. I love this weapon because of them. It's so much fun throwing it from Torrent at bosses that's possible on.
Did you forget that Vyke's War Spear is a great spear? And that it scales almost identically to Messmer's Spear? And that both deal fire/physical damage, allowing for optimization with fire damage buffs? On paper, it sounds like a vastly better option than the Lance, Messmer Soldier Spear, Barber Spear, or Treespear - in regards to dual-wielding with Messmer's Spear. Especially since it also has that little bit of madness, which can put a little pressure in PvP scenarios.
No, it's just weaker than the alternatives so I didn't list it. I answered in another comment that with powerstance nerf the madness usually won't proc until the player is already dead (unless you are running other madness spells or the enemy has VERY low focus). And madness basically doesn't work in PVE anyway.

Not 100% sure on this one but I think the light portion might not scale at all (except to weapon upgrade level). Need to wait until I get the MV for the weapon art though.

I know not everything can be pvp viable, but do you plan on building around the Lamenter Omen transformation? All I can think of is an ironjar, endure, bleed trade build using the arcane bonus, unless the headbutt from the Lamenter Mask has a niche.
From really needs to just remove the damage fall off from all the throwing weapons like this spear and all the smithscript stuff. They already do less damage than a normal R2 from other weapons in their class, they don't need the drop off on top of it.
I can't be bothered with incantations (besides Flame Grant me Strength and Golden Vow), I'm level 160 now and wearing crucible knight armor and putting more points (a lot more points) into Dex is actually viable as well.
I want to like this spear. However, as a Serpent Hunter and Treespear enjoyer, a Great Spear with weak R2 is kinda meh. That's like powerstanced curved swords without jump attack, like a Godskin Peeler without running attack, like martial art weapon without kicking. It's just kinda wrong.
Great video as always but if you do it this way it becomes like. A mesmmers spear build. And limits your weapon choices to this and like.. the eclipse shotel. Maybe the black knife and the golden order GS. This is great for people playing through ng+ and duels but if youre an invader like me it would be more beneficial to meet base faith requirement and slap it on a pre-existing dex build, to use it as a tool in their arsenal along with things like ledas LG. Grab some messmer fire pots, flame grant me and the fire cracked tier just incase. But that's just what little old me would do..

I've had Rain of Fire simply not spawn the cloud. It's a really good spell if you just feel like wasting fp for nothing.

On my testing Keen still outperforms if you have twice the DEX investment of STR, but it seems to scale better than before.

Powerstancing two Messmer's spears would require NG+. Even if you duplicate a Remembrance, you can only get each option for it once per NG cycle.
you can duplicate the rememberance and then turn it in as soon as you start NG+. Still requires NG+ but you can play all of NG+ with the build.

A benefit of the treespear is that you can use its ash of war and then go back to dual weilding for a 10% damage buff. Sacred order works on your main hand if you are dualweilding.
The flame cracked tear boosts the fire damage of the weapon too 👍
Personally I think vykes war spear is a great option to power stance with spear of the impaler as you get to higher levels where you’ll have more Dex and 18 str requirement.

The throw has some utility and I want to shy away from calling a spade a spade insofar as calling it a gimmick goes- but I would love a sweeping attack on this thing that isn't the weapon art! Maybe too much to ask tho
i tried a similar build but with vykes in the offhand, it also worked pretty well while being somewhat thematically appropriate
From my testing, the Fire Coil seems like the best Messmer Flame "incant" despite being a consumable, have fun farming embers though

Some say that sacred infusions are even better, others that Sacred Blade is stronger on this weapon and I say that it just means that the holy damage that is already there gets stronger.
From my testing, it seems that sacred infusions increase the holy burst damage of the guard counter.

Or the actual numbers for Deflect Tear. Time till perfect deflect, does the first deflect keep stacking the buff to 80% guard counter dmg if youre just holding, dmg and stanina negation amount per weapon/shield types.
Okay, someone requested a crystal tear video so I will make Deflect Tear effect clear over there. It's pretty complicated but it does not stack like Youwy suggests (I believe I got the right person who made the video? Other people have asked similar questions about that crystal tear tier list which is kinda all over the place).
I use this with the normal beast claws with bleed infusion.
Would recommend leda’s chest piece, laceration tailsman, briar gauntlets since they proc while moving around during both of the weapons attacks, divine bird legs for stomping aow’s and/or fashion, two hand tailsman, throwing tailsman & horseback tailsmans while using torrent, and if you want alternative headgear for beast claws go for white mask or divine beast head/helm for fashion.

I gonna be honest, i do prefer making a incantation build with messmer helmet and knight armor with the lance than just focusing around it. In pvp and pve cenarios i just get better versatility and can use Fire snake with weasome buffs, out scalling godslayer and having distance damage. + even high poise builds will be interrupted in the combos, becoming just a slap bag
Anime moveset reminds me of the Abyss Watcher's greatsword from DS3!
It might be MP inefficient but I found some success just skipping the final sequence of the ash every time because after the triple slash you regain control of your character pretty quickly but the recovery time before you can roll or start a new skill sequence after finishing the spear graveyard is brutal. It seemed efficient from the perspective of damage per time spent because you can rapidly chain sequences 1 and 2 quickly but the recovery time after the final sequence hits the enemy is very long.
I tried so hard to make a thematic build but focusing on faith for the AOW and then using incantations left me with a great spear with its slow moveset and horrible damage, I hadn't thought of powerstancing with a faith scaling weapon

@@nxvh9062honestly your going to overlevel, it’s not more of a build but more of having eveything. High NG+ cycles do require this to compensate on the damage you take but base game or low Ng+ is over kill and can ruin the game for some

its incredible how badly the vagabond outshines the other classes for optimizing most builds, I'm currently planning a FAITH INT build and its still somehow the best class for it
I realize it isn’t optimal but my favorite way to use it is with the smithscript talisman and the axe talisman. It’s a bit absurd that it takes most of your stamina though.
Messmer's Orb is top tier for the simple reason that it is the most badass incant in the entire game and due to the rule of cool is tier 0
Kinda unfortunate how these throwing attacks are implemented. Would you trade heavy attacks, and all the poise damage that could come with it, for a low range poise damageless projectile poke? The one up side is not costing fp
They should had given it the same damage and poise damage if used up close but weakens a lot the further it travels (up to the what we have right now)

Note: the Sacred Order skill of the Treespear would actually pair well because it grants a 10% (2.5% in PvP) damage buff to both weapons.
I found vike war Speer to do the best because they both have high dex scaleing(just my personal opinion)

Would be awesome, esp considering that the Rakshasha has unique poise that can allow it to go toe to toe with Greatswords. I'd also love to see just a great katana breakdown that shows building the various ones (esp the Great Katana itself) for different builds (int-based, dex/lightning, arcane/bleed etc.)

Very insightful! I've been struggling to optimize a dragon communion build, but I can't find a decent weapon. The closest I can get is giant hunt or spectral lance on a short spear, bleed infusion is available (and likely optimal) for both, but occult is more on theme. Only downside is no dragonwound grease, since neither infusion is buffable. And you can't sell me on that abomination from the dlc, that thing is specifically designed for a dragon cult/communion hybrid build.
What, the Flowerstone Gavel? Trust me, it's incredible on an arcane build, the ash hits for 2k damage.

The scalling of all new madness weapons are a mess, its like mundane in ds2
With the DLC making the game playthroughs much longer, more people now tend to stop their builds at lvl 200 instead of 150.
It might seem redundant, but it would be really appreciated if build videos in the future also touched on.
There is already a level 200 in the stat distribution section. I will continue to add the level 200 distribution to the build videos.
Messmer's Spear might be my favorite Remembrance weapon so far.
It's 1/1 the spear he uses combat-wise.
I shredded Romina on my second try because of its AoW.
I found Messmer's Assault to be a great way to disrupt two of the Peskier NPCs in the Grand Melee near the end.
While it's a shame the Throw attack is so weak, it IS fun to harass enemies from horseback with it.
This spear was disappointing to me when I tried it. Wish the ash of war was just the 3 quick thrusts rather than the whole combo with no hyper armor. Also the heavy being a throwing attack is just disappointing damage. would rather have just the regular heavy attack. Underwhelming in every way.
the ash does have hyper armour, it's just only at certain points during the animations
Having dual fire weapons (Flame art Messmer Soldier's spear) would allow you to buff both with the fire tear, oil tear and flame grant me strength. Don't need the stamina tear when you can swap Shard of alexander out against bosses, you're not going to get much weapon arts out against bosses
I wouldn't run fire crystal tear either way. It isn't worth it cause you have so much physical in your build. The oil tear is mid at best. Flame Grant Me Strength is probably the best argument for full fire but greater barriers > FGMS. Still, if you prefer FGMS that's the best reason to run a flame infused spear which you can do with spare points. Not using Shard of Alexander already so nothing to swap out for bosses lol. You do you but stam tear feels the best for me on PSGS.

Any plans to do a deep dive into Poleblade Of The Bud? I feel like it's getting slept on because of the lack of hyper armour on the ash of war, which is a shame because it's a remarkably fun weapon.
This weapon will probably wait until the first balance patch as I've got things lined up and they probably forgot a lot of hyper armor on flying skills rather than intentionally leaving hyper armor out.
Honestly, I don't care if the throws have damage drop off. I love this weapon because of them. It's so much fun throwing it from Torrent at bosses that's possible on.

Did you forget that Vyke's War Spear is a great spear? And that it scales almost identically to Messmer's Spear? And that both deal fire/physical damage, allowing for optimization with fire damage buffs?
On paper, it sounds like a vastly better option than the Lance, Messmer Soldier Spear, Barber Spear, or Treespear - in regards to dual-wielding with Messmer's Spear. Especially since it also has that little bit of madness, which can put a little pressure in PvP scenarios.
No, it's just weaker than the alternatives so I didn't list it. I answered in another comment that with powerstance nerf the madness usually won't proc until the player is already dead (unless you are running other madness spells or the enemy has VERY low focus). And madness basically doesn't work in PVE anyway.

Not 100% sure on this one but I think the light portion might not scale at all (except to weapon upgrade level). Need to wait until I get the MV for the weapon art though.

If only the weapon throwing attacks weren't so bad. Charged r2s are so important in pve but they do so little damage for how much stamina they take up

I know not everything can be pvp viable, but do you plan on building around the Lamenter Omen transformation? All I can think of is an ironjar, endure, bleed trade build using the arcane bonus, unless the headbutt from the Lamenter Mask has a niche.
For 8 points in arcane it really isn't worth not wearing armor. Rock Heart/Priestess Hearts are way better.
From really needs to just remove the damage fall off from all the throwing weapons like this spear and all the smithscript stuff. They already do less damage than a normal R2 from other weapons in their class, they don't need the drop off on top of it.

I can't be bothered with incantations (besides Flame Grant me Strength and Golden Vow), I'm level 160 now and wearing crucible knight armor and putting more points (a lot more points) into Dex is actually viable as well.

I want to like this spear. However, as a Serpent Hunter and Treespear enjoyer, a Great Spear with weak R2 is kinda meh.
That's like powerstanced curved swords without jump attack, like a Godskin Peeler without running attack, like martial art weapon without kicking. It's just kinda wrong.

Great video as always but if you do it this way it becomes like. A mesmmers spear build. And limits your weapon choices to this and like.. the eclipse shotel. Maybe the black knife and the golden order GS. This is great for people playing through ng+ and duels but if youre an invader like me it would be more beneficial to meet base faith requirement and slap it on a pre-existing dex build, to use it as a tool in their arsenal along with things like ledas LG. Grab some messmer fire pots, flame grant me and the fire cracked tier just incase. But that's just what little old me would do..
