Hello, mom & daughter [Generation Gap Reacts] ! Nightwish fan here, your musical quest summoned me.
Welcome to the world of symphonic metal! And thank you for checking this legendary band! This live recording is from Wacken Open Air 2013, together with Floor Jansen [pronounced Yansen], the 3rd and present female singer of the band, in front of an 82K audience.
About the instrumental and vocal added parts - it's good to know they recorded their orchestral and vocal back tracks with prestigious institutions as London Philharmonic Orchestra. London's The Metro Voices choir group and London's Young Musicians Children's Choir as their regular partners.
Since this is your first Nightwish reaction, it is my duty to give you the [updated] short history of the band concentrated by Ann Waychoff, one of the biggest Nightwish fan who has since passed away (and I am doing this in her memory):
" Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a Symphonic Metal band, with a female main singer. They are from Finland.
Tuomas Holopainen [pronounced Tuo-mas], the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. [Sami Vanska was the bassist of the band starting with their 2nd studio album, he was with them until 2001. Then Marco Hietala was bassist and vocals, since 2001 to 2020. He recently announced his retirement both from the band and the public life for the next year at least. Then in May 2021 Jukka Koskinen [pronounced Yukka] became the bassist of the band, for the Human :II: Nature tour - and recently, the band announced he became a permanent member] And there is the guitarist Emppu Vuorinen [he also recorded the bass lines for their 1st studio album]. Then there is Troy Donockley from UK who is a multi-instrumentalist and vocals. Jukka Nevalainen [pronounced Yukka] is the drummer. In 2015 due to Jukka's health issues Kai Hahto became the drummer and as of now is a permanent addition.
Nightwish has had three singers. 1st one was Tarja Turunen [pronounced Tarr-ya] (Operatic vocals). She was with them until 2005. The 2nd one was Anette Olzon from Sweden (Poppy, strong vocals). She was with them until 2012.The 3rd and current singer is Floor Jansen, from Netherlands (power, operatic, soprano.....most versatile) - you just heard her.
There are live concerts that you should use depending on what era. From Wishes to Eternity and End of an Era (Tarja), Montreux Festival live 2012 and Exit Festival (Anette), Live at Wacken 2013, Live at Wembley, Live at Tampere, Vehicle of Spirit, Decades live (Floor). I hope this helps.
I want to welcome you to the Nightwish community. I hope you like them enough to continue the journey. Believe me Nightwish will surprise you with their songs. You will never know what to expect. They are unbelievable live. I want to warn you that Nightwish fans are hard core. So be prepared. lol "

Although Floor has operatic training, I don't consider the little excerpts she sings with Nightwish to be operatic at all. She sings classical occasionally but definitely not operatic. She did some operatic in this song but only in parts like the single line before the growl, the staccato, and the single word before the belt at the end. She sings on mix mostly.

Floor is an amazing person. Her connection with the fans is second to none.
On the last leg of the South American tour this year, she found out that she had breast cancer. Got home home, got the tumor removed and was notified that she was cancer free. Then went and launched their European Tour 3 days after that. So within a month she kicks cancer to the curb then gets re-energized by her Nightwish brothers and fans.
So dedicated to her craft, family, and fans, she finds a way to balance it all.

Nightwish is a symphonic metal band. Ghost Love Score is Floor's favorite song and this was song #13 on a 15 song 1.5 hour set. Most fans will recommend the 2013 Wacken performance because the sound system and mix is superb at Wacken. Floor had only been with the NW a few months before the the Wacken, Germany festival and she was brought in as a temporary replacement for the previous lead singer, Annette, who had parted ways with the band during the U.S. leg of their world tour. For the moist part Floor was welcomed with open arms by most NW fans who liked her classical and metal style. If you watch some of the other Wacken songs you'll see that she is also the Queen of headbangers and often referred to as the Dutch Windmill. All the Wacken 2013 songs are fantastic and pretty common that new reactors get hooked and wind up going through. the entire Wacken setlist. NW is still very popular throughout Europe and Latin America. If you watch their Buenos Aires or Rio performances you's notice that she also sports some amazing tattoos.

She joined Finnish symphonic metal band Nightwish in late 2012 mid-tour and learned the complete setlist in 2 days before performing in Seattle. This is ten months later, in front of 82,000, and she was superb at this concert singing 15 songs written for the previous two singers. The first,Tarja, was very operatic and the second, Anette, was quite pop. There is a CZcams channel for Floor Jansen where she sings all kinds of covers from Disney, and various types of singers. Nightwish Army South Germany Division here
Hello Mom and Daughter (Generation Gap Reacts) ...Our Boss, Commander-in-Chief and General of the Nightwish Army Gabriel Bardac has already told you the most important things.
It only remains for me to say a warm welcome to the wonderful world of symphonic metal and at the same time welcome as a new recruits to the ranks of the Nightwish Army.
You've just seen and heard her, who is named by her fans worldwide in the sum of her honorifics in hundreds of React videos:
This is Our Majesty Floor Jansen, First of her Name, Goddess of the Valkyrs, Highly Queen of the Vikings, THE Lady of Nightwish, the House Band of the Gods of Asgard, Chosen Ones of Odin ,Protector of our Metal Realm
    Long may she reign
She raises her hand and commands an 80k+ crowd with her incredible presence and power. Just with a wave of her hand.
A member of the Nightwish Army once said: The old gods of Asgard sent Floor Jansen down from the heavenly heights as their gift to Nightwish. They sent them armed with a sword in one hand and a microphone in the other.
And yes, I personally believe that's how it happened.
There is nothing more to say about this
    Greetings from Germany
    the lady
    P.S.: Another Videos for you:
Epica feat. Floor Jansen - Sancta Terra
Floor Jansen & Henk Poort - Phantom of the Opera from the Netherland TV-Series "Best Zangers" from 2019
And another tip: If you're planning on "The Greatest Show on Earth", please show the lyrics to it. In both versions of this masterpiece, that of London and that of Tampere, there are text passages that are a bit too quiet and get lost in the music. These are the lyrics spoken by Richard Dawkins.
And both versions differ significantly in part 1 and 3. If I were you, I would prefer the London version at Wembley Stadium.
The same goes for "The Poet and the Pendulum" as far as the overlaying of the lyrics goes. Especially here it is really important to follow the lyrics.

    @Idefixu Před rokem +48

I'm one who suggested you react to this video. Nightwish is a symphonic metal band, they collaborate with the London Philharmonic Orchestra.
The current Nightwish female vocalist, Floor Jansen, is the 3rd one. She's the most versatile of the three. That's why she, I think, is the best vocalist for Nightwish. Nightwish has many kinds of songs, metal, folky, Celtic, ballads, even one that can be called jazz. Tuomas Holopainen, the band founder, leader, composer, lyricist, writes wast majority of Nightwish songs.
The original female vocalist, Tarja Turunen, 1996-2005, had a very operatic style, the 2nd Anette Olzon, 2007-2012, had poppish/rock style, and Floor, from 2012 on, can sing every style from operatic to growling.
I hope you would react to Nightwish rendition of "THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA",
2005 End of an Era DVD.
It was Tarja's last concert with Nightwish, she did't know that, the rest of the band did. Anyway, her voice is perfect for this song, the role of Christine. So is Marko's, (Marko Hietala, the bassist, 2001- 2021), voice for the role of the Phantom!
About headbanging. Floor's headbanging is called windmilling, because she 's Dutch.
On the video you just see she did not really windmill, it was more like headbanging. Wait until you see Nightwish - 7 DAYS TO THE WOLVES Wembley 2015 video. Floor windmills about half a minute straight, Tuomas on keys, windmills too while playing.
I hope, and believe, you'll react to more Nightwish. As many song as possible and a bit later the other two big ones:
THE POET AND THE PENDULUM Wembley 2015,
THE GREATEST SHOW ON EARTH Tampere 2015
(You just reacted to one of the three big ones, GHOST LOVE SCORE Wacken 2013. The Buenos Aires 2012 version is not bad either. Check it out, it's more intimate.)

As a member of Nightwish Army, welcome to Nightwish! This band started in 1999 with students studying music in Finland: Tuomas (keyboardist & original singer, Tarja). Tarja from 1999 to 2005 sang for the band until she was forced to leave the band. Bass player, Marko here, now retired from touring joined the band in 2002 and stayed until 2021. Guitarist Emppu along with Tuomas are longest served in the band. Tarja's replacement, Anette joined the band in 2007 after Tuomas put band on hiatus because he suffered depression from letting go Tarja. Fans blamed him for letting Tarja go. Then her replacement, Anette left the band in 2012. Band's current singer, Floor Jansen started out as their touring vocalist. Floor and band's multi-instrumentalist, Troy became full-time members.

Sarah Brightman is not a strange comparison at all. In fact, as others I'm sure have already mentioned, Floor Jansen sang "Phantom of the Opera" on the Dutch TV show "Beste Zangers" (Floor is Dutch) with fellow countryman Henk Poort who originated the role of the Phantom in the Netherlands.

For their metal sound A Song for Myself and Romanticide again form Wacken 2013. These will triple your viewer numbers as well. Floor just had surgery for breast cancer but is already back on tour.

Welcome to the world of symphonic metal and Nightwish. Her name is Floor Jansen, she is Dutch and the 3rd and current female lead singer.
The band is from Finland. The mastermind is keyboardist Tuomas Holopainen. He writes 90-95% of the songs ,including the orchestral backing track recorded with the London Philharmonic.
See the comment from Gabriel Bardac for more info and links to a lot of their songs.
You mentioned Sarah Brightman. Sarah played Christine in the Phantom of the Opera. NIghtwish has covered that song, with original lead singer Tarja Turunen and the bassist seen here, Marko Hietala. (see the live version from the 2005 Helsinki show, End of an Era DVD)
Floor has performed Phantom with Henk Poort(Dutch Phantom). First at the 2019 Dutch TV show Beste Zengers and at her solo 2021 Amsterdam show. And just last weekend for the first time, Floor and Henk sang it with Nightwish in concert (only cellphone videos so far)

You just stumbled upon an entire new genre of music that's very popular throughout Europe and South America, but for some behind-the-scenes industry politics reasons doesn't really get traction in the US.
Symphonic metal and its sister subgenre, Gothic Symphonic metal, usually feature classically trained or operatic vocals and orchestral backing (usually in the form of pre-recorded backing tracks, as it's hard to tour with a full orchestra in tow).
So far, the only band from this genre to really break into US charts is gothic metal band Evanescence, but the Nightwish Army here is introducing the band to everybody they meet. And the Nightwish rabbit hole leads to plenty more amazing bands you've never heard of. Kamelot, Within Temptation, Visions Of Atlantis, Xandria, After Forever, Blackbriar, Sirenia, Ayreon...just to name a few.
After Nightwish's Storytime from this same Wacken 2013 festival, I suggest dipping into Gothic Symphonic band Epica - with a guest appearance by Nightwish's Floor Jansen 😉 Epica's Simone Simons is Floor's best friend, and very nearly as good a singer.

The founder, CEO, composer and keyboardist is nicknamed the METAL MOZART, Toumas Halopainin. The music as you analyzed is a merge of classical/symphony music with Heavy Metal. The genre is named SYMPHONIC METAL. Welcome to the NIGHTWISH universe. The lead vocalist, the third in NIGHTWISH'S history is the classically trained, Metal vocalist, who I call a Valkyrie Songstress of SYMPHONIC METAL, Floor Jansen. There are so many, many, many recommendations that I can suggest but you will be inundated for song suggestions from hundreds of commentators to your reaction. I'm sure others have already commented on this, but it makes me a bit sentimental when you praise Jukka Nevalainen, the drummer in this clip. Unfortunately, due to severe problems with insomnia, he had to step back from the band. I've got problems with insomnia myself and shudder to think how exhausting it must be to tour all over the world with that condition! He's still active behind the scenes though, taking care of the business side of things. As a drummer he was replaced by his good friend Kai Hahto. I've played the drums myself and really appreciate Kai's skills - he strikes me as a really nice guy too, albeit perhaps a bit shy. However, Jukka really had a stage presence that I loved, so it was sad to see him go, no matter how much I like Kai.
As a side-note, band leader Tuomas Holopainen calls this specific style "soundtrack metal" ☺ Even though Nightwish is usually labelled a symphonic metal band, they've got a quite varied sound that draws from many influences, so what you've heard here won't give you anywhere near the full picture of the band's sound.
    Thanks for the reaction!

Nightwish is probably one of the best group in the world. These musicians have year of studying music. They write the music, lyrics and are absolutely amazing. When they featured Floor for a tour it sold out everywhere in minutes. She has studied Classical and Opera and is absolutely at the top of the scale when it comes to singing and performing. There needs to be more group's like this. They are all top notch musicians. Their instruments are set up differently than most. Not just for looks but ease of playing them. Keyboard is not straight like most but the player has one side lower than the other so he can play it more easily. They are amazing, I think they make everyone in the crowd sweat with the power of their performance. Incredible 😉❤️. You have got to listen to more of them featuring Floor Jensen. Freaking unreal.

Funny what you infer about Floor Jansen's character. Floor is the most empathic and soft character in real life. But she can also be wild. Floor is a living juxtaposition, as is Nightwish's music. Floor started performing at 16, did music university (partly) and the Dutch Rock academy with a focus on musical theatre and (of course) Rock music. On youtube you will find many extremes. The oldest recording on TV (and YT) is from 2002 (at 21 y/o) After Forever "Monolith of doubt". Het wildest is in her own band Revamp "Disdain (live at pinkpop)" and if you want true opera Floor sings "O mio babbino caro" on Dutch TV. She just started a solo career (at 40 y/o) but stated that she will continue serving Nightwish as well.

Sarah Brightman was the first Christine on Andrew Lloyd Webber's "Phantom of the Opera". This singer has sung with Henk Poort who played the phantom in the Netherlands stage version of "Phantom". They were on a show together called "Beste Zangers" and Floor Jansen and Henk Poort sang the title song "Phantom of the Opera". Floor is the third singer of NW. The first singer, Tarja Turunen sang the title song with NW (with the bass player) just before she was fired (long story). I think that Floor recently sang with Henk Poort on stage with NW recently, but I haven't seen it yet.

General Gabrial should be along soon with all of the background info on the band and a long list of other Nightwish songs to check out. I discovered this band about 4 years ago and was blown away by them. I grew up in the 1970's listening to groups like Pink Floyd, Genesis, Led Zepplin, The Who, Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Yes, Jethro Tull, Rush, Kansas, and many more. I started checking out reactors reacting to songs from the groups I knew so well, and I noticed that on these channels was requests for them to react to Ghost Love Score. One day I decided to watch one of these videos and the rest is history. Because of that I have discovered that there are many great groups like Nightwish, Epica, Ayreon, Wintersun, Kamelot and others that are producing music at a high level like back in the 70's. I am 62 years old and Nightwish has renewed my love of music again.

Follow the wealth of information that Gabriel left for you and you will not go wrong. Expect to be surprised each time you listen to Nightwish. My favorite song changes and is usually the one I just listened to.
I have always said that Floor is a Goddess because other singers may be good and sound great, but they still only sing to your ears while Floor sings to your soul. You feel everything she sings deep and it can make you emotional even if you aren't normally an emotional person. She is simply stunning in so many ways.

My son and I went to their last show in London. Floor has a stage presence that is so immense you almost lose the rest of the band. It's effortless, but she not only engages hugely with the audience, she brings the band with her too, so you don't lose them. Voice of an angel, presence of a Valkyrie. Nightwish as a unit are so good that you don't go and listen to their show, you experience it. They aren't just there behind Floor, they are everywhere.
As soon as we left the gig the first thing my son said was "We need to go and see them again".
The song starts off alternating between 5/8 and 6/8 using a lot of bass and floor tom. Then changes 9/16 and 12/16 where you get a lot of bass double peddling, and bringing the crashes in. Before the very obvious, but very clean switch to a standard 4/4 for a couple of bars before the vocal comes in. yes, I play drums, yes I really like this song 😂

Welcome to the Nightwish's rabbit hole! You've just opened the door of lyricism, poetry, literature, history and science accompanied with symphonic metal music. Awesome reaction and comments from both of you! Greetings from Nightwish's Army Department of Greece!

Welcome to the world of symphonic metal ladies. You have just been introduced to the Dutch Valkyrie Queen of symphonic metal. She can sign almost any genre and has both classical operatic and musical theater training. Wait until you see Floor go hard into her Dutch windmill style headbanging. It is amazing and miraculous that she just stand up straight and starts to sing perfectly. You have only heard a small sampling of Floor's vocal capability. Jukka the drummer is so much fun to watch as well as the rest of the band. Great commentary ladies. I look forward to seeing you both again very soon. Gabriel below will guide you on a journey of discovery if you so desire.

I'm pretty close to your mother's age. I'm a huge fan of Nightwish.
The style of music is called Symphinic Metal. The female front is Floor Jansen. At the timing of this video she was the new lead for Nightwish.
Anyhow, the style of the music is popular in Europe.
Evanescence is like the poor country cousin to Nightwish.
The very first female f front was Tarja Turunen. She's on par with Floor. Jansen.
This is at Wakken in Germany. Huge rock festival.
You should here the song Nemo or Overbrook hills.
I got to see them in 2015 in San Antonio
    (fellow, now- former Washingtonian).
There are several symphonic metal groups you might like
