  • Khaltmaagiin Battulga - The Godfather of Mongolian Judo
Mongolias President Khaltmaagiin Battulga, was so enamoured with Francis Ford Coppola’s The Godfather, that when beginning to build his business empire, he named it Genco, after the pressed olive oil company, Don Corleone used as a cover for his wide ranging, often nefarious business activities. Insightful to say the least.

Battulga came for humble beginnings, like the Genghis Kahn before him, who he idolises, his formative years were spent on the floor of a ger, the traditional Mongol tent which has barely changed for a thousand years
His family were relocated to a camp on the outskirts of the capital Ulaanbataar, after losing everything in a flood of the Huul River, when he was three years old.
He grew up on the streets and attended a local secondary school, before securing a place at art school, where his entrepreneurial flair first showed, when he began selling paintings to tourists in the capital, learning some English along the way.
His father was a coach in traditional wrestling. Battulga soon excelled at the sport. He won the Gold medal at the 1983 World Sambo Championships at -52kg aged 20 and competed for the Mongolian National Wrestling team for eleven years, from 79-90, In 1989 he won the World Cup Championship in traditional wrestling, and in 1995 Battulga was awarded as a Merited Sportsmen of Mongolia.
Along with his interest in judo, Battuglas business empire grew, Genco acquiring controlling interests in many state owned assets during their privatisation. From hotels and taxis, to meat processing and bread milling plants.

His love of judo and national wrestling went hand in hand, and in 2006 he was instated as Chairman of the Mongolian Judo Association. Under his guidance the sport blossomed, with Naidangiin Tüvshinbayar, taking Gold at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing and silver four years later, in London, with Sainjargalyn taking the Bronze. The national spotlight was on judo, the sport attracted youngsters like never before.
With such a dynamic, entrepreneurial leader, running the country and the national judo association, expect Mongolian judo to flourish and grow, as their industrialisation follows suit. With recent sweeping changes in the country, both politically, and judicially, I’ve a feeling he may prove to be one of those leaders, who are easy to elect, but nigh on impossible to remove.
Above all things, the man is ambitious, like his hero Genghis before him, he is doubtless laying foundations to conquer the World.
On the tatami at least ………….
