1989 BMW E24 635CSi Review - BMW's Golden Age?

- Given my limited experience with 80s-era BMWs, getting the owner's OK to take this E24 for a spin was a pleasant surprise. Purchased for $3000, plus some elbow grease to get it to its current condition, is this 635CSi a primitive thing to drive or does it still embody the "ultimate driving machine" mantra 35 years later?

You are the new Matt Farah doing proper one takes. You should get on his podcast
Having owned 4 e28 bmws I can tell you for certain that the steering in that car needs a full refurbishment. You should drive one with a rebuilt system. They are almost telepathic and you can read the road surface through the steering wheel.
Wow I love how bright and airy it is inside.
The big BMW coupes have always been a bit more on the Grand Touring side compared to the 3- and 5-series sedans, which is counterintuitive since two doors usually signals sportiness. From the same era, E28 M5 would be quite different. Anyway, great review, always enjoy the old car content.
Keyword “big” their sporty coupe is the M3
The 6-series share the same chassis and pretty much every component with the 5-series. Early models shared the same specs as the E12. The weight difference depends, but approx 40kg. Both are close to 50/50 in distribution. This is a cool review, but a bit off (as the driver says himself), compared to an accurate representation of how these cars should perform, when in top condition.
You are brave taking that down canyon roads
You should try and drive an Alfa GTV6 definitely my favorite sports car from the 80’s
It's good to review a bad car every once in awhile as a pallet cleanser lol
My 83 633 is a bit lighter and also manual, which helps a bit. I think these had 208hp stock, where as the older ones were around 180. As for steering, there are many components in the recirculating ball system linkage that can wear, so this maybe a problem. However, all systems like that will be completely dead on center. Once I get used to it, I find it decent for more casual back roads driving and pretty good in high speed turns. Overall however, it is definitely a much more laid back experience than my 2017 Toyota 86. 😆
I think the Vision Neue Klasse is (maybe) pointing towards this direction on exterior design. This car looks very pretty (the 635CSi, of course)
I have a 1984 633 csi E24, the shark. A rocket.
This is the best looking car ever made!
Awesome review!
Shark nosed BMW's are simply the best looking cars, EVERRRR!
You really do need to try a better example. If you ever get near DFW give me a DM.
I remember distinctly the first E30 318i review that I read, which had it as a massive return to form for BMW. Apparently the company had lost its way in the 70s and early 80s, with the over-rated 320i, the terrible eta engines, and the 635i that was derided as a “German T-bird”. I can see where they were coming from after watching this.
@3:38 they only made 185hp. US Spec m5/m6 made 250 hp from the s38b35 engine.
In 3.8L form, mine absolutely rips: czcams.com/video/z35RbzNVziI/video.htmlsi=BgT0gkETivXTa1wb
Looks like a great b58 candidate 😮
Nice.
