This was infuriating to watch. My wife has MS which physically changes the brain chemistry resulting in depression and anxiety. She is also ADD, and this almost destroyed our marriage before it was diagnosed. Once we realized her brain processed stimuli and information differently we were able to make changes to how we communicated. Now we celebrate our differences and take advantage of our unique strengths. JMac's perspective would have left us in despair and exhausted, and most likely divorced. I am grateful to God for supplying the Christian psychologists that helped us navigate these challenges. My counselor showed me the heart of God more than any sermon.

@fatalerror-dz2qy thou shall not kill in context, was talking about murder, not defending your nation against evil or evil ones against another, if that where the case how do you explain the children of Israel having an army and many times God blessed them in battle? Secondly, by your logic, no nation would ever have an army to defend itself, so if the Nazi party or people like Hitler rise up, no nation would have an army to defend against that right? So let the enemy come in and kill everyone and take over correct? That’s silly! Because evil is in this world there will always be bad people doing bad things in this world, so we need a Military to defend against it, that’s wisdom. Also, in that line of thinking, Christians can’t go to war but only the pagans can? So as long as unsaved people die but Christian’s don’t it’s ok? How selfish and unloving! There’s many holes in your logic. Lastly, even if what you say is true, and it’s not, but for the sake of argument, let’s say it is, you basically said, to heck with your suffering of whatever your going through, you get what you get so you deserve this! Wow, so how does that minister to people who are struggling? How does that minister to where they are and help them recover? So, I’ll make sure to not send people your way, thanks, blessings and I’ll pray for more of a loving heart for you ❤️

As a current PhD student or Psychology studying mental illness, this is very concerning and disheartening to hear. It's a reminder that we as Christians need to rely on our local church pastors for guidance, and not rely completely on the big names. Although this is an awful take from MacArthur, I can still respect all else that he has done in ministry and his excellent exposition of the scripture. Heck, I even have a MacArthur study bible. We don't need to condemn fellow believers for bad takes, rather, we should pray for them. Don't throw the baby out with the bathwater and don't take sides. We are ALL brothers and sisters of Christ who are fallen. Even the "greatest" of us are still fallen sinners.

When I was in 3rd grade, I had a teacher who brought my parents in one day and told them, "I think Monoki has ADD (ADHD inattentive as it would later be named) and he should be put on Ritalin."
I was promptly pulled out and homeschooled for a number of years after that suggestion. and pretty much was never taken in to get examined for any mental conditions.
13 years ago, after coming down with strep, I started getting panic attacks and some health anxiety centered struggles. And pretty much, after it was determined my struggles were mental, I was met with "oh youre just not trusting God enough." "anxiety is a sin"
    Parents are big Macarthur fans.
Additionally, my parents had concerns about Autism because of some tics i had since the anxious breakdown. but again, never taken in or tested.
30 now. I'm looking into what it would take to get evaluated for ADHD/ASD. lot of concerns there for another time. But its one reason i don't bring the subject up much with my parents.

PTSD isn't just in Vietnam, or any other war. Some people grow up in American homes that are a war zone. From what I understand, some PTSD symptoms are anxiety and depression. I've had both for decades due to an abusive father. After I was saved, I begged the Lord to heal me, but I guess the answer was "No." I have thru Drs found medicine that makes it bearable. Seriously, I wish God would give the ignorant people who say things like this a taste of it themselves and see how long it is before they change their tune. I think you’ve made a good point, Dean. A lot of this is probably born out of MacArthur’s isolation and ignorance. That isolation and ignorance has made him say dangerous things like this that are truly detrimental not only to individuals that are hurting and need support, but to the cause of Christ going forward. Who would want to be a part of this uncaring community?
On that note, I asked this in the comments on your video about Jinger Duggar, but I’ll ask it again here: In all sincerity, what is the difference between Gothard and MacArthur? The more I learn about JMac, the less daylight I see between him and Bill Gothard. I could TOTALLY see Gothard saying this same kind of thing. It seems like Jinger just traded one ultra-legalistic dogma for another slightly different flavor of ultra/legalistic dogma.

I think Costi was given influence, and took it, too quickly, without slow and healthy discipleship (it seems, I obviously don't know the man). He does represent a kind of zeal that comes from a fresh awakening; its good that he rejected the prosperity gospel, but in a haste to be right we can so easily latch onto new error. And I think the fundie crowd were so glad to have someone with a public profile reject that false gospel, they propped him up and gave him way more responsibility than he likely should've had; and there in the acceptance of this group he accepted their law gospel. I say Costi, it really only appears that way; I could be wrong about him; but, all the same, he represents what many people go through: doctrinal whiplash that comes through a lack of relationship in orthodox theological spaces. He's the one who might've done better in this scenario, MacArthur is no surprise (albeit a terribly unhealthy take) Small rant over.

Secondly, there are plenty of people dealing with mental health conditions who have no need for medicine. I’m just sick of people pretending they have a Biblical basis for judging people whose lives they don’t understand.

I did take an antidepressant for a while, but was refused the counseling that should have gone with it. The time that I was in relieved of the depression was short because the depressive thoughts and anger came back.
This is just another example of what this particular guy has done that shows he really is just more of a talker, rather than understanding the Gospel. He is not a good counselor so, yes, he should not be giving advice if he hasn't experience of the problem or have experience of those who have it. I know someone who started a drug rehab, no drug problem of his own, but he studied and talked to people who did overcome, studied for years before setting up the brick and mortar part of it. Thank you for talking about MacArthur. Honestly, those of us in the historic, confessional Reformed world have many problems with MacA. This spans decades. His "Lordship Salvation" message started the controvery decades ago -- and he hasn't changed in this regard. MacA puts out a couple of reformed tenets out there, but he is still FULLY dispensational. He misunderstands the gospel, adding obedience as a part of our faith to stay in the faith (not biblical). Dr. R. Scott Clark and Dr. Riddlebarger have excellent resources on MacA from a proper historic, confessional Reformed view.
