  • On 15 June 1988 an unmarked military van carrying six British Army soldiers was blown up by the Provisional Irish Republican Army (IRA) at Market Place in Lisburn, Northern Ireland. The explosion took place at the end of a charity marathon run in which the soldiers had participated. All six soldiers were killed in the attack - four outright, one on his way to hospital and another later on in hospital.

Neighbour against Neighbour. Give back the land or forever suffer the consequences. The powers are to blame

      It's REALLY not so simple.
It's not really a case of Britain refusing the give Ireland to the Irish.
It's the settlers of British decent refusing to assimilate. Even after 400 years.
They didnt want to be part of a Cathotlic Theocracy , which the Republic was up until maybe the late 90's, depends on who you ask.
In other words Ireland was controlled by a sick and twisted church that the Protestants of Northern Ireland wanted no part of, they're still fearful of their identity being taken away, as the Protestant people of Ulster have had a siege mentality from day one in Ireland.
If Britian "gave Northern Ireland back to the Irish" , then the Loyalist (pro-British extremists) would return to their pub bombings and shootings of innocent catholics.
Loyalists (UVF, LVF,RHC etc) killed about twice as many civillians as Republicans (PIRA, CIRA, RIRA, INLA) during the 30 year conflict known as the troubles.
Loyalists were bombing pubs and shootings children (teenagers are children in the law) before the Provisional IRA even formed.
(PIRA was the "main" IRA during the conflict, the militant arm of Sinn Féin, Gerry Adams , Martin McGuinness etc etc)
I really wish it was as simple as Britian simply returning the remaining 2/3rds of Ulster or 1/6th of Ireland that is currently under UK jurisdiction, but doing that right now would just cause another , probably dirtier war than we already went through.

I remember this. Heard the bomb. Terrible altogether and it’s a miracle a ton of civilians weren’t killed but i spoke to a guy who was driving behind the vehicle.
Said body bits were hitting his windshield. Terrible taking of human life

Funny because the British policy at the time was to avoid engagement and catch volunteers down the line.

Yes, you were right. The manly and intelligent thing to do would have been to send out all the IRA volunteers out to fight the British Army in a "straight fight".

Is it any wonder some soldier's gave information to loyalists?? I probably would have aswell after watching the cowardly IRA. Soldiers with there hands tied behind their backs working of the Army's Yellow card system.
