  • DAVE LEE'S BEHIND THE DISNEY CLASSICS #15: LADY AND THE TRAMP (1955)
I take a behind the scenes look at the making of 'Lady and the Tramp', Walt Disney's 14th feature-length animated masterpiece.
When I first started production on this installment, I never would have expected my work to be somewhat of a detective hunt. This is a movie which, I surprisingly found to have a poorly documented early production, and whose story had been told in many contradictory ways over the years - by both unreliable and reliable sources.
To put together this piece I had to go on my own detective hunt, to get right down to the true story of the production of the film - even enlisting the help of various Disney Historians as well as tracking down documentation at the University of Michigan in the United States, to help me form, what I hope to be, one of the first fully accurate documentations of this picture.
In some cases, the poor documentation of this feature was the work of a studio publicity machine, who felt their own fabricated version of the truth was better than what actually happened.

Lady and the Tramp is one of my favorite Disney movies because it's very romantic. Certain scenes in Lady and the Tramp remind me of six Thomas the Tank Engine stories about being careful, eight Thomas the Tank Engine stories about working together and eight Thomas the Tank Engine stories about behaving well. The stories about being careful are Percy Runs Away (Volume 3), Thomas Breaks the Rules (Volume 4), Henry's Special Coal (Volume 3), The Flying Kipper (Volume 3), Trouble for Thomas (Volume 1) and Toby the Tram Engine (Volume 3). The stories about working together are James in a Mess (Volume 4), Duck Takes Charge (Volume 4), Down the Mine (Volume 5), The Runaway (Volume 5), Better Late Than Never (Volume 5), Tenders and Turntables (Volume 3), Trust Thomas (Volume 6) and Percy and the Signal (Volume 7). The stories about behaving well are Thomas Comes to Breakfast (Volume 3), Pop Goes the Diesel (Volume 5), Diesel's Devious Deed (Volume 5), A Close Shave for Duck (Volume 5), Gordon Takes a Dip (Volume 5), Double Trouble (Volume 4), A Cow on the Line (Volume 4) and Trouble in the Shed (Volume 3).

This movie grew out to be my favorite of all movies I've watched in all my twenty something years. The one movie I could go and rewatch countless times on end. It is animation excellence of the highest class.

Somebody on deviantart named akril15 has pointed out that Ward Greene also wrote a series of newspaper comics that picks up where the movie left off. In those comics, lady and tramp originally had two sons, not one. The other son that was not included in the direct to video sequel is named Scooter. Also, the name of daughters in the comics were different and there were only two of them.

One of my three childhood favorites, along with The Little Mermaid and Sleeping Beauty. Thank you Dave for producing this behind the scenes featurette. Really enjoyed it 😊

"Lady and the tramp isn't one of my favorite Disney classic's. It's one that I grew up watching but not on an incredibly regular basis."
That's my relationship with this film too. It isn't that wonderful but I do like it very much. And it reminds me of those childhood years when my life was a little easier and simpler.
BTW, I remember my Lady and the Tramp VHS was in 4:3 aspect ratio, but I think it was a pan & scan of the Cinemascope version rather than the original 4:3 theatrical version of the film...

Yeah, I feel like that's probably how a lot of people feel about the movie. It's a classic, but I wouldn't say it's in the top tier.
Ohhh really???!! That is so bizzare! I wonder why they'd do that??!

Amazing video Dave! Definitely worth the wait, and a nice night cap to my first night home from my extensive testing. Some very interesting stuff in here that I had absolutely no idea of. Definitely going to go and watch this film again in the very near future. Have a great night!

This one took a good couple of weeks to properly research and write (in between other videos), smashed out the editing across two full days. Lots of work, but certainly proud of the final products :)

Great Video Dave! Watched this as soon as it came out, but just got a chance to comment. Been missing these! I had no idea that the history behind this movie was so clouded! This might be one of, if not the best BTDC so far just because this story is never told. Love this vid & continued congrats on your climbing subscriber count. I was wondering (I commented on the Blu-ray release video, but I don't know if you get notifications for older vids) if you have heard about the Wal-Mart release for The Last Jedi? It's the one I want.

Trying to do more of these -- this one should've had a faster turnaround, but it turned into a lot more work that expected. Happy I got it done though! Not sure I'll match this one again haha.

Siamese Cats is the worst thing about the movie, but they’re not in it long.
It’s also a product of its time, sadly, so if you watch it, you need to keep that in mind.
