Three years ago, Chrysler was sputtering toward bankruptcy, but one man bet he could save the company and tens of thousands of jobs. Steve Kroft interviews Sergio Marchionne.
What a remarkable individual he was. His achievements were astounding. Best of all, no suits and no clean cut image. Grit and sheer single minded determination. Tens of thousands of jobs saved, two famous brands survive.
I worked for Chrysler from 1985-2010 when I had to retire due tio a disability.I retired from Belvidere,Illinois after transferring there from our plant closing in Newark,Delaware.I will say that we should have sold it to Lee Iacocca instead of Daimler, all they did was run Chrysler into the ground.Glad Fiat took over, now we are on the fast track to become one of the worlds best automobile production companies in the world.Thank you Fiat.

Rest In Peace Sergio, Sergio’s leadership and passion shall not be forgotten. Italy is mourning the loss of their greatest ambassador of Italian workmanship, style and ingenuity. Sergio single-handedly saved the auto industry in Italy which by itself was a Herculean task but he was able to replicate the industrial miracle in America by saving Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep. Sergio will always be remembered with immense affection and gratitude by the thousands of workers and their families through out the world who have partnered with him in achieving stability and success.🙏
as a chrysler employee at a dealership i can tell you the quality has imporved tremundilously since FIAT has bought us as well as both the interior and the stlying
Much respect for Signore Marchionne, he saved not only Fiat but also Chrysler (and subsidiaries). We need more men like him in the auto industry to revive dying brands.
I've watched this quite a few times and I often wonder if he already knew then that both the Dart and the 200 were both going to be sales disasters. Rest in peace, Mr. Marchionne.
In 2010, when development started, people were still recovering from the recession. So economical compact cars were an important segment. Unfortunately by the time the Dart hit the showroom floors the 2nd SUV craze began as the economy recovered some.
I've watched it a number of times now, and I'm pretty sure it's one of the Lancia-based concepts that will eventually be the new 200. I could be wrong, of course.
And yet 8 years later there are only 3 cars that Chrysler still builds and are in a major need of updating: The 300, Charger and Challenger. All relics from the Daimler era. I want to root for Chrysler but I keep reading about how unreliable their products are, unless you are a Ram Pickup. That's where all the love seems to go.
the dart is not half bad I own one great car got a Durango to go with it too great cars great engines and efficiency sad to see the dart get killed off but sooner or later we will see a replacement emerge the 300 charger and challenger will be replaced by something else and I see it happening at the end of the decade times are changing
Drew Mallicoat Actually the market shrank as people are moving more to Crossovers and SUV's in addition FCA wanted to start updating all of its plants without stopping as much production as possible. They started shuffling product and updating plants, the plant that made Dart and Chrysler 200 has been updated again and will be producing the next generation Ram 1500 which it is already producing testing mule trucks and it will also produce FCA's line of body on frame large SUVs starting with the Jeep Wagoneer.
The shift to SUVs in the 1990s was a major problem for Ford after the wild success of the original Ford Explorer. Just like in investments, diversification is key to weather trends and ultimate success. Focusing on fads benefits only in the short term.
kinda forgot to say chryslers stockholders and bond holders were kinda wiped out,,,, the usa and sergio did to them what bernie madoff did to his investor/creditors
Sergio had no skin in the game. His only interest was the dealer/parts network to be used by Fiat. Those who had legitimate offers where told to kiss off. Those who held bonds where told to drop dead. Sergio's only interest was to bring Fiat back to the US market because of the low price foriegn labor used to build Fiats, translates to nice profits for "their" people.
Where is the Passat the Malibu the fusion the legacy (soon)… the segment died. It’s even talks of Hyundai discontinuing the sonata. Also the fiat 500 is very VERY profitable outside the US market. Do your homework.
FCA quality now that’s something to laugh about! Mechanically the Dodge Dart is outstanding.... what a joke! 217 NHTSA complaints about the engine, and tons of failures about the transmission. Link to website: www.carcomplaints.com/Dodge/Dart/2013/
Not a fan of this guy, just funneled Mopar profits overseas. Killed off Mopar performance and gave everything a Mercedes engine. A high schooler can do that.
he is awful he killed off an American icon the Dodge Caravan that's been around forever that's all you see on the roads are Caravans I agree the 200 is one of the best cars out there he lacks leadership I'm really worried about my local Dodge dealership or they're going to sell piece of crap Fiats
Marchionne should take that shitbox Fiat and go back to Italy. For all its flaws Chrysler doesn't need a waste of space like Fiat sitting RIGHT next door to it to remind everyone that they sold themselves out to someone who can't even build a decent car on his own. Profitability is NOT worth this kind of insult.
What a remarkable individual he was. His achievements were astounding. Best of all, no suits and no clean cut image. Grit and sheer single minded determination. Tens of thousands of jobs saved, two famous brands survive.
Well said.
Rest in peace, Mr. Marchionne. Through hard work, extraordinary passion and sacrifice you made yourself into an industrial giant on two continents.
I remember watching this and thinking what a cool leader.
R.I.P.
What a great man. I may not be a Dodge/Chrysler/Jeep fan, but I damn do respect them.
Indeed... may he rest in peace.
Ferrari as well.

I've watched this quite a few times and I often wonder if he already knew then that both the Dart and the 200 were both going to be sales disasters. Rest in peace, Mr. Marchionne.
to be fair all car sales are disasters since consumers love SUV's
In 2010, when development started, people were still recovering from the recession. So economical compact cars were an important segment. Unfortunately by the time the Dart hit the showroom floors the 2nd SUV craze began as the economy recovered some.
That Alfa sounds nice,,,
Wow, amazing executive. He must have been the busiest person in the world. CEO of Chrysler, Fiat, Ferrari, and Maserati at the same time!
An Incredible Man ,May He Rest In Peace
Sergio 🇮🇹❤👍
what is the car behind Gilles at 07:53?
I've watched it a number of times now, and I'm pretty sure it's one of the Lancia-based concepts that will eventually be the new 200. I could be wrong, of course.
Am happy for Chrysler, for Detroit and, most importantly, for America!!!
Mike K exactly! Even scotty kilmer says quality went down even more after the merger. I must say, the 1996 caravan was the best looking car they had
RIP. #ForzaSergio
It's the guy from Mario the music box arc

"If you can't make it in this segment, you're doomed" ~ Sergio Marchionne. Dodge Dart cancelled after 2016. Enough said.

Chrysler was at that time the worst auto maker of usa . Now with fiat partnership is the worst automakers of the world. What a crap
Fiat 500 continues to be a flop and where is the Chrysler 200?
Where is the Passat the Malibu the fusion the legacy (soon)… the segment died. It’s even talks of Hyundai discontinuing the sonata. Also the fiat 500 is very VERY profitable outside the US market. Do your homework.
lmao
Great man but Chrysler products are still terrible.
Lord you tell.
FCA quality now that’s something to laugh about!

The pitfalls of being Italian? That was a moronic statement Sergio, really out of place there
Fiat 500 flop in USA...
Too bad they make absolute junk. Garbage.
Lib Dis quality got worse with fiat :(
Not a fan of this guy, just funneled Mopar profits overseas. Killed off Mopar performance and gave everything a Mercedes engine. A high schooler can do that.
