I live in Scotland, where we get like a week of good weather a year (25 degrees max), and ice is pretty standard here all year round. I've always been given ice all over Europe, even in winter in ski resorts you'll get ice.

Hey I'm french, and it's standard for sodas to be served in a glass of ice, and in a lot of cafes and restaurants in the summer, especially in the south of France, if you order a cold drink, they'll ask if you want ice in it, even if it's not soda.

My favourite thing about visiting Nice in France in summer they put frozen grapes in my white wine to keep it cool. It doesn't dilute or change the flavour like an ice cube would when it melts. Nobody likes warm white wine!

I also went in 2022 Our guide was my former language teacher and he invited me to go on his adult trip with him and others he invited, so he was the one to plan everything and where we went. But we walked literally everywhere we went without fail with the exception the train ride to get into Austria. And it hit 38 and 40 degrees every single day. Needless to say the shoes I bought a couple days before going looked and felt like I had them for five years
As a European, it's standard practice to serve drinks WITH ice, no matter what season. In EU we don't provide free refills, that is exclusively a U.S.A thing.

I know when I've been to the Netherlands, France, Austria etc they have given us ice. I have never thought about no ice as a thing? Am I missing something?
Former waitress from Germany here. We give most people ice that ask for a „brand name“ drink that usually comes in a bottle. The empty glass to pour it in almost always comes with ice :) wine, water, beer, etc come without, unless you ask for it.

I've worked in multiple bars in the uk over the last few years. Coke has a very specific standard that they set for bars, basically that it has to be served with ice and lemon, to the point where they send product testers to the bars to make sure the bars are complying. It's the same for restaurants too
I think it's just a Europe summer-season thing? Because in my first trip there, they *always* gave me this big ass glass of coke with ice and a slice of lemon! 8 year old me was so happy 😂 it was one of the very first culture shocks I experienced in my life (mostly bc of the lemon slice)
Honey we were in Italy for 14 days and almost had to shed blood for ice. Everyone’s experience is different and I’m glad you got your ice, but it was a hassle. BUT they treated us very well and I would definitely go back!!! Hope you guys enjoyed yourselves ❤

The ratio ice to soda might be a bit different. In my experience you get way more ice in the US plus the glass is usually twice the size of a standard one in Europe. Where I live (Netherlands)you usually get 2-3 ice cubes in a glass or maybe a bit more if it’s really hot outside.

I'm British. Ice is normal in Europe. In England we tend to ask if you want ice, because the weather is cooler for most of the year. I tend to immediately say no to ice because soft drinks are cold anyway. I say no to ice when on holiday in a poorer country or somewhere i think water cleanliness may not be high, one can get stomach bugs from dirty ice.

No. I'm in Germany. Have been here for 10 yrs. They bring you icevor ask if you want it. What they don't do is put ice in a beer glass. That is just sacrilege. 😅

And BTW the ideal temperature to refresh yourself and stay hydrated is actually around 16 degrees Celcius or 60 degrees Fahrenheit or even body temperature. In India for example they drink lots of warm tea when they are thirsty. Ice cold drinks can make you sweat even more.
I like the videos of Americans going to Europe and being shocked that they charge for water😂 Every American would benefit from leaving the country and realizing their reality isn’t the only reality. In Ghana West Africe, they looked @ us like we had two heads. Most places you can get a cold can of Coke, but no ice @ least in kumasi & Atebubu when we were on Mission Trips. Sometimes, we just got warm Coke or Spirte
I went to Barcelona and one day I had a bloody nose while walking by a restaurant they offered to give us ice then we had to give it back when I was done lol. 😂 it was crazy
My question….i want to know how you planned out this trip! I so want to take my kids on a trip to Europe. But stresses me out and I don’t know where to begin! (Lodging..transportation..affordable flights from USA to Europe…etc. I did quite a bit of research and gave up!
As someone who lives between Mónaco London Italy ? You ask for a Coke it comes with a glass & 🧊. Also my Samsung fridge has a tv & Ice maker installed. I'm shocked that most Americans think other Western countries don't know what ice is 😂.

That’s interesting. I grew up on one of the outer islands of Ireland and we never had ice and drinks even in Summer.

90% of the time in the UK you get ice. You don't have to ask for it it's generally asking for it not to be put in your drink
