  • Actor, comedian and musician Matt Berry invites music journalist Pete Paphides to have a root through his collection of bizarre, uniquely British records. Star of The IT Crowd, and more recently Toast Of London which he writes with Father Ted co-writer Arthur Mathews, Matt Berry released his 4th studio LP 'Music For Insomniacs' earlier this year.

check this great write up of Brian 'Butch' Royal at the Publand Variety Show 1974 ...
"And then, as the final artist entranced, the well-known Gremlins of Publand struck as if dead on cue! For from the moment singer BRIAN "BUTCH" ROYAL launched into "Beautiful Day" the hand microphone crackled, died, blurted, hummed, and did all in its electrical power to thwart what the singer had set his heart on, the performance of his life.
To the great relief of the willing audience, however, the artist remained unperturbed switched mikes offered "C'Mon over to my house," and followed up with three absolute showstoppers in "Solitaire" "Danny Boy," and (a nice false tab here) "Somewhere over the Rainbow."
At the close of his performance the audience simply erupted, with "Butch'' so deeply touched by the response that he was nearly in tears! But oh yes, they are beautiful songs; and they were beautifully sung!
The accompanists for the entire show were the very competent musicians of THE BRYAN WILLIAMSON BAND. And with a happy Ray Donn joining the cast for the final curtain, so came to an end the 1974 "Publand "Show"... "

Tubular Bells by Mike Oldfield, 3 million plus copies sold so far? Yes very obscure.
Kate Bush, first 3 albums and the "woodland folky pastoral" feel. Plays an almost disco song from her 5th album. The person who titled and edited this video is a berk.
That said, Matt's got good taste in music. Even spotted a Jean Michael Jarre bootleg in one pile.
Then we have the journalist ironically snickering like some sort of hipster tosser over a perfectly decent Dennis Waterman record.
Bang on a Drum? Very good 70's kid's LP complete with a killer drum break which at one point meant it was changing hands for £100+ a time but thankfully seems to have levelled off at more reasonable £5 (I paid £1, £0.50 and £0.50 for my three copies, two of which were long gone trading fodder) Moderately obscure but a lot of people do know about it.
Brian Royle. Done right that kind of stuff is wonderful and unique but you have to plough through dozens of mediocrities to find the any sort of gem. In fact save yourself the time, money and legwork and pick up both volumes of "Working Man's Soul" instead.
Not got that BBC themes compilation. Would snap it up for a couple of quid or less.
Morris On! Great choice, though frankly I prefer Morris On 2. Rise Up Like the Sun by the Albion Band is another great album kind of in kind of the same vain.

Jeff Ferguson That doesn't surprise me at all, I just made a conservative guestimate. Turns out I was way to conservative.
