    I really enjoyed it, it was essentially a tongue-in-cheek ‘documentary’ that contextualises his scumbag life and presents him as an awful person with zero remorse. The musical numbers added to the irony and a load of stabs at him and the royal firm in general

    I liked it. A lot. The Andrew POV works for me, framing everything as he sees himself. The bias is obvious through its exaggeration, so no need to provide a 'balancing' voice or to explain anything to an audience. Plus, its all event driven, so we dont need to bother with character arcs. It doesn't pretend to be anything more than it is, which is 50 minutes of laughing at a complete moron. Compared to the appalling Diana the musical, this is great.

    If Diana The Musical had committed to being a parody that's meant to be camp and silly and ridiculous, like this musical, I think it would have done so much better.
    I really enjoyed this musical, I thought it was hilarious and absolutely ridiculous, personally didn't feel like we were meant to be laughing at Andrew, rather at him. I love that in the Obey song when Charles is showing slide show pics of Andy and Epstein, they put up a picture of Charles and Jimmy Saville, I would love to see it adapted into a full show similar to The Windsor's, with Edward as the pathetic bumbling fool and Anne as this vampire like character, and more.

    Personally, I loved it. It's what British satire should be, which channel 4 has a long history of doing and is a reminder of why the tories should not be allowed to privatise it. I felt you were firmly laughing at Andrew, not along with him. If comedy can't punch up at the establishment, then what's the point?

    • @markaxworthy2508

      Errrrr.....no. Satire should take risks to confront major issues. Prince Andrew is such low hanging fruit as to not be worth addressing. Let's not pretend that this is in the finest tradition of British political satire. It is using a sniper's rifle from the safety of a pill box to shoot an already wounded bunny caught in headlights.

      @@cammiehalliday757 It is likely that most of us are or have been knowingly or unknowingly friends with a paedophile. Regretably, in the past it went under euphemisms such as "kiddy fiddling" and society tended to look the other way.
      What exactly is Prince Andrew himself accused of doing? Having sex with a 17 year old in a jurisdiction where the age limit for consensual sex was then 18. In the UK at the time, this would have been legal. In the Bahamas, where they also reportedly met, this would have been legal. In Florida, where she came from, it was legal. In Australia, where she lived for some 20 years, this was legal. In Utah, where she lived for two years, it was legal. In fact, in every other jurisdiction touched on by this case, it was legal. And guess what? Today in New York it is now legal as well. In other words, if he did the same today, he would have no case to answer.
      I have no problem with Andrew being charged with historic abuse cases, being found guilty and punished. Unfortunately, this never happened because his accuser took the money, so justice was not seen to be done and the interests of the rest of us were not served.
      As a result, people talk on these threads openly claiming he was into 13 year olds, for which there is not a thread of evidence.
      By most accounts, Prince Andrew is unpleasant and unlikeable. However, he is only about eighth in line to the throne and of little more constitutional significance than the rest of us. So no, this is not of great public importance, though it clearly is of interest to the prurient.

    An interesting ponit about being both narrator and protagonist. It did occur to me that this might be an example of being an unreliable witness. Such that having narrator and protagonist being the same person underscores the failings of the man, deluding himself about his virtue, honesty, decenency and value, and having these delusions revealed by the other characters.

The cast seemed to have fun and the songs were quite witty. I liked the Alice in Wonderland meets the Royal Family quality that made it just curious enough to keep your attention, but easy to follow along the light dusting of "plot" that moved the story along to the amusing ending.

    I enjoyed this, very much in the satirical tradition of stuff like Spitting Image and it was really Musical Theatre literate which was a nice surprise. Mainly I'm impressed with the balls on Channel 4 for sticking it on prime-time in Christmas week!
    I don't think it's a subject beyond parody, but I do agree, having Andrew as the Protagonist and Narrator was a mistake. Far be it from me to make suggestions but I couldn't help but feel the Newspaper Seller would make a better Narrator, as a kind of 'voice of the people' sort of role?

  • @roisingrant
    @roisingrant Před rokem +2

    Maybe it could’ve been a better choice to have Edward be the narrator? Could’ve set it up as “having tea with Edward in his drawing room” with maids and possibly Sophie/the children popping in and out of the room whilst he’s giving this account. I feel like overexplaining _why_ we’re having tea with Edward would ruin the novelty of it… it’s not as if we’re told why Che is telling us the story of Evita, so why bother? And where Edward could be a “trustworthy” narrator, I feel like Sophie could give sort of snarky commentary here and there. I think Edward would make sense since he’s arguably the quietest member of the RF, with little to gain from being biased, yet he and Andrew being close in age would have grown up together giving us an “accurate” picture; and having Sophie as the “snarky sidekick” in telling the story would make for an engaging dynamic. Just my 2 cents.

    I thought it was funny, bower it wasn’t a high quality production. It did have an odd feeling that they’d had this sitting around for quite a while though, and that they thought they’d get away with showing it in this odd gap between Christmas and new years. I think The Windsors did it better, that had a truly wacky stage version too.

  • @missaj5623
    @missaj5623 Před rokem

    It was a really strange concept but I wanted to watch it out of curiosity. Like you I was a bit unsure that something as serious as the allegations are should get the spitting image treatment. I must say I do have a very tiny amount of sympathy for Andrew in that he has not been convicted of anything and wanted a chance to clear his name in court but settled out of court to prevent proceedings taking place at the same time as the Jubilee. That being said many seem to think he is an unpleasant individual and did keep unpleasant company (not that we can or should be judged just by the company we keep.) But I watched and found it quite entertaining in parts. I agree it is probably more an Edinburgh fringe type thing but then it is unlikely so many would have got to see it.
    I am surprised you say we don't have much musical theatre on British TV. When I was growing up my introduction to musical theatre was great film adaptations of the Sound of Music, West Side Story and Seven Brides for seven brothers to name just 3. Yes technically not films of the stage version but still a good introduction and made me want to go to the theatre to see these and other shows which I have now done. The Sound of Music is my favourite but the film is way better than the stage production which is odd.
    So thanks for this review which I mostly agree with. The guy playing Charles does look nothing like him which I found a bit odd but then again the guy playing Andrew didn't look much like him either. I think the one playing Emily Matlis was probably the one that looked most like who she was playing but I suppose it wasn't supposed to be a look a like competition and it was easy to keep track of who was who. I found my mind was drifting a bit towards the end but I managed to stay with it.

    Fun fact. The period between Christmas and New Year is called Twixmas!
    I didn't watch this. And I'm unlikely to. I wasn't surprised to hear that C4 were going to do this, but given their reputation as anti-monarchy (see a lifetime of alternative Christmas Day messages), I had no expectation it would be something for anyone who is an Andrew/RF defender. I wasn't surprised when it was being shown, public broadcasters tend to put their high profile shows at this time of year as people are more likely to watch. And that it was aimed at older viewers who are less likely to stream something else.
    My problem has always been that it would minimise, and make a joke of sexual abuse. That it takes a crime and reduces it to entertainment. Because there is no way a 50min musical could do the seriousness of the allegations justice. Satire makes people look ridiculous. But ridiculous people are always less threatening, and something to laugh at. I don't think there is anything amusing in Prince Andrew. I feel sympathy towards his daughters, but that doesn't mean that Andrew deserves it. Maybe, if it had been a hard hitting drama, I might have watched. But mostly Im waiting for the day he finally gets arrested. That I would definitely watch.
    Also I don't think there are many people left in Britain who think Andrew should have his titles (or freedom). But there are lots who believe he should be expelled from the RF because he damages that institution. But unlike with Prime Minister's it's a bit harder to fire a member of the family!

    This review is right. It was well made and the songs were fun, but it trivialised the subject matter and made Andrew seem a blithering idiot, but not really anything worse. This was partly because Kieran Hodgson comes across as likeable. What also struck me, though, was that the other performers were miscast. In the case of Charles, why the bushy grey eyebrows and goatee? The woman playing Sarah Ferguson was bland and completely failed to communicate her personality. Margaret Thatcher was merely grotesque and Harry Enfield didn't evoke Tony Blair very well either.

    I liked the idea of it but the reality was abit poor. The songs-all terrible. They just didn’t sound right and they weren’t very modern which I think made them work even less. People who wanted the scalding pointed commentary (like me) didn’t get enough of it. The Tony Blair impression was weak which is a shame because I love Harry Enfield in the Windsors. I did like Munya Chawawa as Charles and felt that they should’ve done more of the family tbh. That’s why the Windsor’s works-it picks fun at multiple royals and not just the cheap shots like Fergie and Andrew. If Anne had done a fierce tango whilst verbally decimating Andrew I would’ve loved that. But they played it safe. Controversially I think now is the best time for this sort of content to be on tv-prior to the coronation we need to be having genuine discussions as a country about the continued need for a monarchy. Highlighting their extreme flaws is exactly what we should be doing right now. I’d rate it 4/10-a generous point added for Munya and the one song I liked “I nailed it”. The rest was toothless and indeed tuneless.
