"Be ashamed to die until you've accomplished some victory for humanity." Love it.
***** you dont have to think in big thinges. The ones who protected my country (not USA) and died for it made an example and by that madea victory for humanity.
+InfiniteEIC Not necessarily. I believe that if you at least try to make an impact on somebody else's life either directly or just by setting a good example to follow, you would've done something for humanity. You don't have to be a genius or celebrity. You can just change those who surround you by being yourself and having good morals. They, in turn, would go on to change those who surround them. And there you go. You have achieved something for humanity before you die.
+InfiniteEIC that sounded very close-minded of you and obviously you didn't read what I said carefully. By the way you interpreted my words, we can tell where your mind is at.
+InfiniteEIC You don't have to be einstein to accomplish some victory for humanity. Start with loving yourself. When you love yourself, share that love among those around you. Help them in need. That is also victory for humanity. To care about eachother.
+InfiniteEIC But isn't it better to impact AT LEAST the ones next to you rather than decide that there's no fame in your future? It would just be another good person in the world rather than "the guy who influenced nobody 'cause he decided he couldn't be famous".
"if you could live forever, why even get out of bed in the morning? because we always have tomorrow".....some deep shit right there
+Prophet Dude Try to get the message, Don't read it so literally... You must be a Simple Minded person... If We were inmortals we for sure would stop living life.
Yea Niel has his moments when he speaks the deepest of shit. Love this guy
Thing is, we don't have forever. If you live forever, you'll see the sun start to die and swallow the planets. you still have a timescale.
and what of humanity that evolves without you? They'd think you some obsolete relic, some kind of oddity, like how we look upon our ancestors as unintelligent animals. Most people who want to live forever want an incredibly massive lifespan, like 2 million years or something, but not forever.
dakotagau give e the lifespan of about, 150 years and ill be good.
I'll take 1000 years. Then again, at the age of 33, I already feel that I'm losing touch with society and a lot of our advancements. Maybe I should just clock out at 70.
“I love the unknown” - truest scientist statement ever.
@Jezus nadchodzi Fear an imaginative man? Woman? Deity? Nah, I'm good fearing the people that fear "god".
I mostly remember Larry from this clip. Three years ago, I had severe death anxiety and I was searching for videos on CZcams that can help me. In this interview, Larry expressed in few words everything I was feeling then and it really helped.
His death hits different for me.
R.I.P Larry
I know exactly how you feel. I have a severe case of death anxiety as well and although im young it still bothers me like crazy. I went straight to this video after I heard the news of King dying. Hopefully you find a way to treat the anxiety.
@@hailes9841 Thank you so much. I really hope you overcome this too. I know it can be mentally and psychologically paralyzing, so I wish you strength and relief.
@Lucasfrm92 I am sorry about that Lucas. All I can tell you is that it gets better and eventually you become less anxious about death. Some days death anxiety will hit you from nowhere but you will be able to process the feeling better. Wishing you strength.
@@kingj7013 hey i have death/health anxiety and general anxiety, i over think everything and am constantly questioning life and why im here / what happens when i die, any advice??
@@aviunox philosophy will help. The more you read about death from a philosophical point of view, the better you feel about it. I would recommend existentialist philosophers, particularly Heidegger.

soldiermajor If we were growing up in a world where the media was much less prominent in peoples decision making, he would be considered one of the most intelligent people and communicators to have ever lived, but becuase of right wing media, he's just another 'opinionated atheist' in alot of peoples eyes, MEDIA IS THE SPREADING OF DARKNESS AT THE SPEED OF LIGHT, BELIEVE ONLY WHAT IS EVIDENCIAL PEOPLE!

Pseudo Philosophy from Neil , Death is actually terrifying and Jesus came to save us , REPENT & BELIEVE.
@@christfollower5713 there is nothing scary about death
@@MichaelMyers66793 u can say that because u didnt face it , but if someone would tell you , you will die tomorrow night , think about it , terrifying , but why be hopeless about it while Jesus came and gave us eternity in heaven with glory and beauty ...
@@christfollower5713 do you know Albert Einstein he didn’t believe in an afterlife and he got a problem with his stomach and could get an operation but he refused to because he accepted that his time was up
@@christfollower5713 This is a big problem that we have in our society -- believing that death is scary and then finding it taboo to talk about it. It is not so. When you look at nature, doesn't everything cycle? Everything is once created, grown, and then dies. We are human. We are simply part of nature's cycle. I respect your religious beliefs. I was once a Christian and grew up with your beliefs, so I very much understand it. Religions depend on people's fear of the unknown in order to "recruit," though. Religions provide concrete "answers" for things that as humans, we can have no way of ever knowing. I think that's appealing for many people. If you believe in something, that's your right. But you can't force a belief on someone. That's not how that works. A belief is very personal. I find it interesting that when I was a Christian in my younger years, I WAS terrified of death, just as you say. Now that I am older and don't ascribe to any particular religion, rather, I recognize death as a cycle and a part of nature, I'm much more at peace. As a result of being at peace with my eventual death, I feel I've been able to live my life in a much more full way. I've also been dedicating my time and working with hospice patients to help them through these issues (look up "Death Doulas!") It's incredibly rewarding and saddens me that discussion about death is stifled in our world. You effectively put a stop on death discussion by saying things like "death is actually terrifying so you should repent." Why is it so scary to YOU? We need to ask these questions and get to the ROOT of why this topic is scary for you. The trouble with people who have these concrete religious beliefs is that inevitably when they die, their beliefs (your beliefs) WILL be tested. Now THAT'S a scary thought. Not having any concrete beliefs about something and recognizing that you don't know anything is MUCH less scary. It opens your mind and heart to other possibilities. So perhaps that's a piece of the puzzle as to why you find death scary and others in this thread do not-- you have this concrete belief for yourself that you know will be tested one day. Again, totally fine. Your freedom to believe what you like. I simply do think it's going to make the process of dying a bit scarier for you since you have a belief that will inevitably be tested. Someone else without that belief will simply be going along for the ride and perhaps using coping mechanisms he/she learned earlier with a Death Doula, perhaps. I really care about people and really believe that death should NOT BE SCARY. It's the BIGGEST part of our lives! We should be treating it just as sacred as we treat births!
It's easy to not fear death, until you face it.
As an atheist, i know that the Only Place Mr. King is living forever in, is our hearts and minds
Why the fuck do people like Donald Trump and Kanye West wanna be presindet, and not FUCKING NEIL dEGRASSE TYSON???? It would be so much win for humanity and the Earth...

+p terziev Because Neil isnt an idiot.

+ROBERT GLENN TRUJILLO Because "it's not his field"?. And What? Donald Trump's field is well-informed politics. HOOOOKKKAAAYYYY
+p terziev Having an intelligent US president does not mean a win for humanity and earth, lol.
Started having death anxiety accentuated after my dad died. He was the most brilliant person I know. It’s so creepy to me how such a beautiful consciousness can just vanish from existence.
It’s nice to be religious and it’s nice to wrap pretty words around your fears like “I love the unknown” or “do your best for humanity.”
But at the end of the day I’m making the same choice as Larry, and living forever. This version of me will never exist again for the rest of the universe’s vast, vast existence. I take up less that .01 percent of its time.
It’s honestly such a cruel experience to be a conscious person. The Buddhists say that living is suffering. I used to think that was just super edgy talk, but it is true.
DM me. I am curious to talk to someone who i agree with here
Rip to your dad 🙏🏻 ❤

POWER IN MISERY
I do not fear death. I fear non-existence. To not exist means I will never see the future of humanity, never know if we can find a way to go faster then light, never know the answers to millions of questions I have. That is what is going to happen when I die and that is why we have religion and the ever-after. Religion gives us the hope of seeing and learning after we die. Unfortunately, you only have this one short life to make a positive or negative contribution to humanity.
Deep my friend. Nice words.
All this won't even matter to you anymore when you die cause you'll be dead
The fear, the worries, the wondering of "what if" are all part of what it is to exist, to be currently alive. Ask yourself, did you ever have this pondering to know about the future of humanity, of progress and the million other questions you have; did this pondering of yours affect you before you were born? Before you were born is the same as non-existence. After you die you will likely be a part of this non-existence again. Fear, fear of death and fear of the unknown is only for the living. I had none of these fears before I was born and I will likely have none of these fears when I am gone and at peace. You are correct though, we do likely only have this one short life to make a positive or negative contribution to humanity. As Patton Oswalt's late wife used to say about life according to Patton, "It's chaos, be kind."
It's all illusion. Life and death are concepts.
Eh? "I don't fear death, I fear the ending of my existence"... THAT IS FEARING DEATH!
That's as much bull as saying, "Oh I don't mind being hungry, it's not having any food in my stomach that I don't like."
Nothing to fear now, only peace. RIP Larry King!
Here after the sudden death of Larry King. This was the interview that first came to my mind. Rest in peace.
thought of this clip as soon as I heard of his passing. RIP.
Me2, this clip came up same time as I finished reading the news about he's death. I got a really bad feeling about my own existence same time as I feel horror for Larry

That’s so deep because it’s the truth. Death is the bouquet of life, and it’s a collection of a story and stories and paths we went down. It’s the end to a story. And knowing that the party won’t last forever makes it so you can see how much there is to do and how much time you really have is limited.
Holy crap now this is a dark moment.
Not really??
RIP Larry King.
I hope Larry didn't fear death in his final moments
I remembered this interview the second that I heard that he had died.
R.I.P Larry King 👑
Me too, instantly
It’s is the knowledge that I am going to die that creates the focus of me being alive
Neil: "You know what I want on my tombstone?"
Larry: "Mushrooms and pepperoni"
That’s racist
I'm completely the opposite. I figure since I am going to die anyways, what's the point of all accomplishments, success, wealth, etc. It's all going to be taken away in a flash as though I never acquired it in the first place.
Sure, if I leave something behind that's going to benefit society, well that's great and all, but will it really matter to me when I'm gone??
Suppose I won't even remember anything from this life. It would be like it didn't happen. It would be as if I weren't even there.
Black Shark the point is to feel the importance of your doings while alive. So, yes, it doesn’t matter after death, but that doesn’t matter.
Black Shark, the way I view it, you've been given this life as a gift of sorts. You didn't earn your life, you didn't go through some extensive, rigorous test which you had to beat to earn 75 years. No, you're just given this life. All the sudden, you wake up on Earth, and you're alive. You have 75 years or so total, and you can do whatever you want to do with it. It's up to you. Live it in a way so that when your time comes to die, you won't look back and say "Dammit. I wasted it. I wasted my only chance at existence."
Every second, every day, every year, your life, it's all a gift. Do with it as you please. You can do your best to make life an adventure, to be kind to others, to learn about the universe you've been thrown into, or you could waste it. Now, maybe you and I define what not wasting our lives it differently, but that's not the point. It's all a gift, it's been placed in your lap without you earning it, use it like you would wanted yourself to if you could look back after it's all over.
Have a great day, and life. Best of luck.
@pmanxs but I am me and I don't want to be nonexisting. Yes this is ego maybe but it really scares me.
@pmanxs that's also something I'm afraid of but when I'm happy and enjoying life it's worse because it will be taken from me one day. It was so much easier when I was suicidal because I wanted to die.
@pmanxs I know you're right
I actually love Neil he's so smart. Like idefk why every time I see him explain something I'm like yasss
What's smart about what he said here?
Wow, I love Tyson's other quote too about whether or not heaven exists. He only replies with, "Doesn't matter." He doesn't have the inclination to completely refute or accept the existence of God--he's too busy living life. He's one of the greatest agnostics I've heard.
He’s actually chill unlike Dawkins, the bitchiest militant atheist
I am rich, have kids and accomplished many things in life. But when i face death and thinking about many things, the feeling of accomplishments never enough

Nobody will probably read this but i fear death like larry does and would live forever and neils theory is right however the world is always changing and there will always be something new to experience before it goes away forever and thats what would motivate me to get out of bed even tho if i would live forever but unfortunately thats not how nature works and i hope there is actually something after live and that it makes larry happy and at peace, rest in peace larry king i understood your fear
This is something I literally just thought of but it makes complete sense to me. Why fear dying if you feel like you've experienced enough already? In a way, I feel this way not because I think I've run out of things to experience, but because I feel like there is a certain baseline we all come back to. If we are too high or too low, eventually we all come back to our typical baseline. It doesn't matter what you experience, what you have, or how you feel in the moment, we all will come back to our baseline emotion; our default. We might fear dying because we think we have too much to live for, but what if you believe that acquiring more doesn't really change our baseline? Why then be afraid of dying if you've already experienced your baseline for long enough? I know my future might have short spikes of highs and lows, but it all comes back to the same baseline eventually. I'm don't feel afraid of not experiencing that baseline in the future because I've experienced it enough already. So why would I be afraid of losing my future if I feel like it's just more of the same baseline?
🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾
It's easy to not fear death when you've lived a very financially comfortable and happy rewarding life. It's us poor people who are terrified of death. We don't know how next week will be for us, we can't sit back and enjoy life.
I agree with you partly however I think people who struggle have more to live for thus making their lives more meaningful. It's like working on 67 Mustang Shelby from the ground up and then accomplishing it months-years later and having a sense of accomplishment that sticks with you your whole life. Knowing you did something difficult that most couldn't do.
Instead of just buying it, which most people can just do.
I'm not specifically talking about cars but just accomplishments in general, makes life worth living. It makes you think less about death (and life)....and just doing what you love. This is why I think it's important to always set goals, no matter how big or how small. Like man...one day I wanna break 90 playing golf....or one day I wanna make a million dollars..or one day I want to sing in front of a huge crowd.
A life of no struggle creates no meaning. If life were purely good times, the good times would lose their value as we would get bored and eventually tired of it, then what?!Scarcity creates value, therefore if there is suffering, the good times mean infinitely more. A life of struggle and meaning is far more precious than a life of ease but no meaning. Also, if your life were to be only ease and pleasure, it would be much much harder to let go of this life when it is your turn to look death square in the eyes, which would induce only more suffering. People who go through more struggles would be more welcoming and accepting of a final rest in this physical life. Maybe the ones who have it harder in this physical life, have it easier in the next life since they have learned more.
Boy the promptness with which Mr King said yes😊😊😢
Tyson is such a brilliant guy. Fucking love him.
But if everything dies eventually, then what's the point in getting up in the morning? It will all ultimately amount to the same thing, correct?
i guess its to appreciate life as it is and to aspire people without the same thought to do the same thing, love life as life, in fact why fear death if it is the now or soon to come, just live knowing you will live to see tomorrow and use that belief to make something out of today so you can embrace it the next day, thats how i live life.
+RavenBoy99 I guess my only question to that would be, why? Why do what you say? Live well, aspire to do great things, etc. Why?
Chris Longmire because what else is there to achieve in nothing, or in heaven or whatever happens after life, not much can be discovered or changed or remembered, why spend time on nothing and not on something? its pointless to bloat on that the inevitable comes, as the mind will only think that it self will die and so will the universe instead of the other way around, we all must face this phenomenon and then go on with the flow, this has been a thing happening from the begging of existence and will continue with or without you depending on what happens next. so what im trying to point out is its okay to be afraid, but its not okay to be baffled and frozen on something that doesnt matter 'now'.
+RavenBoy99 I see what you're saying; that fearing the inevitable finality of death isn't wrong, rather to be fixated on it would be wrong. I agree, however, the part I don't understand is the accomplishments and changes to be made. Why do them? I understand the motivation is to cherish life, since you will be dead one day. However, if death is final, ultimately, it won't matter whether you cherished life or made changes or had great accomplishments.
well thats where people will just stop and think and get that fixation on the 'ultimately' issue why i understand. its practically impossible for people in these conditions to wrap their head around that kind of problem and find a solution to it. In all honesty there is no primary goal set already in the human mind and that's okay, we don't need a primary goal, only a way to make them. thats what humans are so amazing at, creating stuff (up), there's practically billions, maybe trillions of ideas to get the mind wrapped around from just one individual such as yourself can create other then just one genre of ideas, and they can get distracting (in a positive sense) to people to look at another side of the spectrum, remember we dont know if being dead is an experience or a phase even and ultimately i see no purpose on finding out about it, its irrelevant to look at something that happens once in life and create expectations on it, try to focus on things that can continue to grow and change in this world. i understand this maybe hard for anyone to understand but theres never really an escape from life and death, but neither from happiness or saddness, its a process we live with and cant get enough of and this goes for all beings.
That's the stupidest argument i have ever heard... I would want to get out the bad every single day, because i can... for eternity and do shit i want.. or i can lay in my bad for eternity cause i want to.. it all comes down to of your personality. the urge to live is not bound to the fact that you know you are going to die.. but because u can, the urge is the movement of living, you move because u can not because i know i am going to not move( die) and this feeling is stronger then the idea of being eternal and having a wish to do it tomorrow.. i could become everything i want if i would have time for it..
RIP Larry King 👑

That was amazing!
I fully agree with him
I sure hope Larry now is in somewhat like heaven and doesn't need to be afraid anymore

RIP Larry King
Wise words. I agree, Tyson.
I like you neil, and your viewpoint is definetly worth considering ... though i think some of us (at least i) dont do things thinking that the clock is ticking and maybe the opportunity wont be there tomorrow , but rather because of the expectation of a long/short term reward (neurologically speaking) , i dont care if i live forever or just a year, i want to spend that time doing something fullfiling ... though in my case prefering eternity instead of the year.
So when you ask why? My wanswer would be, because i want to have fun (in the broad sense) now as much as tomorrow.
I'd probably say this is my favourite person in the entire world.
No better way to diminish the fear of death than to build out an extensive list of accomplishments that you can be proud of
“The meaning of life is that it stops.” -Franz Kafka
Living forever is a wish that every person has. But living forever isn't a blessing if your loved ones can't. Imagine watching all your loved ones die off and you are still here with the heartache.

My reaction was exactly the same, when Larry said "Yes", I thought: "Uh .. OK, we are done talking!", and I started laughing at the same time as Neil deGrasse Tyson. A small step for my brain, but a giant leap for my ego!
"삶에 끝이 있다는 사실을 알고 있는 건 중요성을 부여해요. 내가 지금 살아있다는 것에 대해 말이죠.
성취해야 할 일에 대해 조바심을 내게 하고, 사랑을 표현해야 할 필요성으로 이어집니다. 지금 당장이요. 나중이 아니라."
I love his insight. I wanted to share with you before I fall asleep. Good night :)
"Be ashamed to die until you've accomplished some victory for humanity." - Don't be fooled by lofty words and loftier goals people. This advice is all well and good, but humanity exists in the simplest act of kindness to all sentient beings. You don't have to split the atom or cure cancer or be nailed to a cross to save humanity's "sins". By these measures 99.999999% of all who have passed would have died ashamed.
It's more than enough just to love someone with all your heart and care for them till they pass or till you pass. No illusions of grandeur required.
Is making life for other humans more pleasant through kindness not a victory?
+Cameron Reid Exactly. That's the point.
He's not saying that grandeur is the goal. Your examples are victories in their own right.
Agreed, only a very, VERY small number of people leave this world behind with a legacy. How many of us know our family tree past our great grandparents and beyond? The cold hard fact is that the vast majority of us will not accomplish great feats. There are different ways to look at it, of course. Pessimism vs optimism. Pessimism is just more realistic to me.
Dude I'm pretty sure Neil would agree with you on all counts, his prime example was expressing your love to people :)

In a speculative scenario with a focus on a high quality of living and sustainable resource use, let's consider a hypothetical number like 1,000 years. In this extended lifespan scenario, advanced medical technologies and efficient resource management could support a thriving and healthy existence. The significant physiological and genetic changes over such a prolonged period might lead to discussions about reclassifying humans as a distinct species due to the unprecedented nature of the adaptations. However, it's crucial to emphasize that this is purely imaginative and not grounded in current scientific understanding or capabilities.
