      I’m so glad this was helpful.
      You can do it!! Keep trying. Viola is such a beautiful instrument. Hopefully someday, you can have your own viola to play at home too.
      Good luck! Keep making your music.

    I've played viola at a beginner level for 5 years, I'm going to be a freshman in highschool and somehow I still can't read music. I had a basic grasp of it, but when I was starting out, nobody taught me how to read notes well. So I learned to play by ear. It's gotten me this far, but it's getting really stressful. I have a hard time learning things and getting them to stick, so hopefully this will help ;-; it's a little dissapointing, but with all the chaos that my class brings, I can't focus which means I don't learn. Anywho, thanks for this video :)

      It’s so common for string players to learn to play by ear and miss the steps to reading music! Ear training is wonderful though! I love playing by ear too, and I’m constantly pushing myself to play anything and everything I hear. But literacy is also important for musicians.
      Now study the notes and you’ll be unstoppable!! You can do it!

    Thank You so much for this video! This is my second year playing the viola and I didn't know how to read notes. This is really helpful to myself as a 7th grader. I will definitely recommend to my friends. I plan to watch this video as much as I can to become fluent in reading music!

    Thanks! This is a very clear and helpful video! I had a viola that I started to learn on, then my son came along so I stopped. At the beginning of 5th grade he decided to play viola in his orchestra class. Now that he has a year under his belt, he is teaching ME, and we have a lot of laughs over how I can't read the music. This gets me closer to catching up with him so we can improve together ;)

    Thank you so kindly for breaking it down this way.. I have a small braln-transposing issue, so when i learn something, i keep it locked into my OWN system, so I don't confuse or mess it up, when i use it.. so-- reading piano music, since I was ten but NOW trying to read VIOLA notes, on music, keeps tripping me up... now-- I clearly SEE the pattern-- I just have to READ each note, as: the NEXT note up... this is wonderful! you have helped me immensely.. and made it so very simple.. 🥰🤗🤗🤗... ex: when i see c, it is really d... well, long as I am NOT playing piano, 😉🙃

    • @angelacorbin2400
      @angelacorbin2400  Před 3 lety +6

      Hi Mikah!
      Good question! The marker here is pointing to the RANGE of where the notes on each string will appear on the staff.
      The notes on the C String (the lowest string on the viola) will be the lowest notes.... starting below the staff at the red "C" note pictured. The notes on the C string go up from there step by step. The C string includes the notes C, D, E, F.
      Then, the G string notes start in the bottom space of the staff and include G, A, B, and C.
      Then, the notes on the D string start on the middle line and include D, E, F and G. The notes on the A string (the highest string on the viola) are the highest notes on the staff and start on top of the staff.. and go above the staff: A, B, C, D.... etc..
      I hope that helps!

      It’s never too late to learn. Talk to the orchestra teacher at your school to see if there are any options for beginners in your high school orchestra(s). Maybe you could take some private lessons to help get caught up?

    • @angelacorbin2400

      Yes, you are right that middle “C” starts on the middle line of the staff, but the LOW “C” (the C string) is down below the staff and it’s actually a “space note.” Hope that helps!
