That's the point, he survives doing that because he makes Homelander feel small and makes him want to prove himself. Basically playing into his daddy issues like his female agent in the first season did his mommy issues. The only way to control homelander is to force him to want your respect, admiration, or affection. Even in the comics Homelander never killed the director because Homelander can't kill someone he doesn't feel better than. It'll eat away at him he never got to prove himself better. If he killed Edgar he still got punked out and all he said would never be proven wrong to him. In a way him talking down to Homelander is the exact reason he has a bit of power over him

Soldier Boy was kind of a joke in the comics. When I heard he was a major threat in this season, I was like "What? How?"
But when I saw Black Noir run after Homelander told him they are going after Soldier Boy, that is when I knew Soldier Boy was serious in the show. To know how crazy that is if you haven't read the comics, Homelander got Soldier Boy to sleep with him almost like a power move, because SB wanted to get into the seven, but Homelander just lied to him and did not let him join the seven. Black Noir was able to murk Homelander in the comic.

As an older brother with a less than peachy childhood life, you think it's your fault. When you decide to leave it's because of years of dismay so you've internalized it to the point where you swear it's all you and if you left everyone's life would be better. I believe, and hope, that this is not the end of Black Noir. Out of all the things he has survived, I do not feel like a punch to the stomach, even if his insides were hanging out, would be enough to end him. I feel like either Homelander did not actually kill him (only took him out of commission) and merely wanted people to believe he did, or maybe Stan Edgar plays a part in bringing Noir back. We know that superheroes can be revived in the comics.

20:27, Of all the times they sell Homelander as being insecure despite his status and nigh-invulnerability and lazy since his level of power means he rarely “breaks a sweat” as the Legend says, it was genuinely awesome and surprising to not only show that he isn’t a completely inept fighter since it’s assumed he’s never had to actually fight anything, but him calling himself “the upgrade” feel like genuine confidence rather than self-aggrandizement to hide the “the gaping black pit of insecurity he calls a soul”.
Well it shows that they only sell Homelander wanting to feel loved by his fans cause he never had a family, but compared to other heroes and humans, he sees himself as quite superior

That's just my dumbass opinion. A train is a bitch. Black noir isn't dead. Season 4 will most likely be good.
Ryan wasn't forced into the plot. It's been about Becca from the beginning. Butcher's decisions from start to end were about Becca. Ryan has everything to do with Becca.
Homelander has pursued this relationship with Ryan since the end of season one.

And since they were he only ones with a viable plan or option that COULD stop Homelander, he wanted to do everything he could to ensure it went off without a hitch. And hell, they almost DID end up clapping Homelander.
Like for real. What "right" way to take him down was she thinking of? Legit the only things that _could_ kill him were soldier boy or an entire squad of supes on Maeve's level. They had one but not the other. Homelander straight up flipped their PR script and let them know that good pr was the only thing keeping him from going ballistic. They had _zero_ other options for taking him out and they literally went back to square one at the end of the season for no damn reason.
