I think that all of the horrors that we see depicted aren't diegetic. I think they represent each character realizing they're living in a rose tinted past, remembering what actually truly went down, and letting go to some degree.

My dad served in Kosovo, Iraq, and Afghanistan. And this is what happened when he told us about them. Hed show us photos and videos. Laughing people, happy times. But the farther he got into the time he spent there, the darker they got. The less smiles. You could see the differences in the eyes of the soldiers. They lost something. Photos have dates and names. Some pictures have a pair of boots without a person there. It changed him, what he went through there. And this one scene wrapped that up without a word. That's why I love GK.

Just finished watching this series. Really somber ending which fitted beautifully. Marines all knowing that things hadn't gone the way they thought they would. Rays reaction speaks volumes.. quite sad really.
One of the coolest things is that this is the first actual music we hear in the show. Most of the show's music or songs are sung by the Marines and Iraqi people. Even this song could just be from the video and amplified for dramatic effect, because the video ends with the song.
At first, the kindest men who wished peace left, and then the men who wished for war left one by one, and then the men who left last are the ones who are consumed by war.. But all of them will come around when they come home.
This absolutely makes me tear up every time I watch. Obviously there are soo many metaphors packed into this one scene so many emotions but this was so real I was young 12-13 at the time and I thought we were fighting basically modern nazis. Guys this show is perfect i worked with a Marine vet who was stationed with 1st recon (was with recon but same outpost) these men are the baddest of badass the book is a great read too i ordered it after watching it and alot of the lines in the show were actually said by the men in the real life story Evan Wright did a really great job depicting the war in Iraq

The whole end scene follows the whole arch of the show, everybody’s having a great time at first, but everything slowly gets darker and darker.
