I miss my CR500. Most videos do not fully encompass how much faster these old 500's are than the new stock 450's because in most situations that explosive power does not all translate to forward momentum. The best way convert all the power these bikes have to offer into forward momentum is to drag race on the tarmac with a nice sticky road tire. I've run my CR500 against 450's and KTM 520's on the road and the CR500 just leaves them like they're standing still. You need to put your full weight over the bars to prevent looping out and launch in third gear. The first two gears are just a waste of time. Even giving the opposition a 50ft head start I can reel them in and finish with a bike length in front. Off road it's a different story, they're often neck and neck and the 450's will edge out the 500 on looser surfaces due to traction. I can understand why the 450's pull faster laps on the track. There is such thing as too much power, too soon. A top fuel dragster would just sit in one spot spinning its wheels if run on a dirt road. That's why the 500's are ancient history. It's really sad as they had so much more personality than the 450's. While that wild power doesn't all translate to acceleration it sure puts on a good show. Hundred foot rooster tails, boulders being sent into orbit, berm exploding grunt and when they do hook up well, warp speed. It's a primitive machine oozing in testosterone and takes a rider with a big set of gonads to compliment it but no other dirt bike has the fun factor or silly factor of a 500 being run WFO.
