  • Not all bows are created equal. The Stemmler Archery Tartar bow has a unique grip that made for an interesting project. Showing the time spent and attention to detail was difficult to squeeze into one video. Constructive criticism is welcome to help us better serve you all in future videos.

    Stemmler Archery the OG of bow building. The first bow that Fred Bear ever made was from a stave purchased from Fred Kibbe, a Stemmler protege.

    My first bow was actually a Stemmler Tartar just like this and I definitely have to agree, it had the FUNKIEST grip I would ever come across. I would LOVE for it to have this kind of modification done to it.

    I worked on a vintage stemmler and they used a very thin glass, thinner than other contemporary vintage bows. Those stemmlers were made quick cheap and sloppy, as shown on video. Excellent work refurbishing and modernizing that bow. I don’t play with Stemmlers anymore.

    Unbelievable how much work you did to this bow. It was fascinating to listen to you explaining not only what you were doing but also the reason behind it. I have made some self bows, but they never come out great because of my inability to pay attention to detail, and my commitment to actually finishing the bow. Thanks for this video, very informative and entertaining. I hope my life allows me to watch more of your videos and possibly own one of your bows someday.

    Thanks for making my bow.
    I am the South Dakota adult male with the Youth Longbow at 45 pounds to my actual draw 24--24.5. I am using for nocking point this piece of ear cartilage just before ear hole as low as I can go while the full finger is touching the cartilage part with top finger using a split finger grip on the string as my nocking point. Thanks for getting it done in time for my birthday December 20th.

    Bow is upper 50's lower 60's, I am thinking due to the bow being made in the late 1960's. This was a cheaper model of bow but not the cheapest they made, reason why the bow was not in the best of design as it was mass produced faster then higher end models Stemmler made. I think Stemmler made there own bows. The thinking as to why the bow was a bit off in the hand and so skinny was that this model was made for a Teens/11-12 first real bow after they had used a 20 pound kids all fiberglass bow.

      @@greatplainsbow It is about all I can find on the bows as the site I used has so little on some brands like Stemmler that are not a Bear, Ben Person, Indian, York, or Shakespear that for business records kept better notes and/or have a big history. I can tell by looking this bow has a 1960's style to it, judging by the almost recurve design my guess is it was just before the time the patent for the Bear modern recurve design was going to expire, so others had to use the Ben Person style of nearly recurve as he allowed brands to use his patent for a small fee as Bear had set the fee really high for use of his patent each year. The other Manufactures had to do this or use the older Static Recurve that was not really used at the time, only for some lesser bows mainly all fiberglass models.

    Man you're a wizard. I'm planning to restore my one piece longbow. I would like to stain the riser. But I'm afraid that the stain is going to go into the laminates And maybe cause delamination. What's your thought on that. Is it possible to stain edges of the lamination when a sand bow dow and not mess up the bow?

    • @greatplainsbow
      @greatplainsbow  Před 7 měsíci +1

      You should be just fine staining it just don't let the stain sit before you wipe it off. As far as the limb edges it'll work fine again just wipe it the stain that gets on the glass off right way. If you don't get it off before it dries, no problem just dampen a rag with laquer finish and wipe the stain off the glass. It'll come right off
