Renault Grand Scenic II EPB Parking Brake Failure Reset

  • Renault Scenic II How to reset and repair electronic parking brake after a manual emergency release. Or if you got one or more of these fault codes C1162, 5162 or DF043 (Parking brake failure).
    These error codes and problems usually comes from a faulty relay in the EPB unit. I will show how to repair and reset and where to buy the relay. This DIY will work on any Scenic II but there are variations of the placement of the EPB unit.

    CALIBRATION ADVICE: As the idea is not apparent from the video I would like to share a piece of information how to calibrate this EPB. Just look at 8:00 in the video, the guy says you are supposed to open the cable on the right side with red arrow. Then he says you can turn the whole cable to move the slider inside the EPB. Also he says the recommended distance is 60mm. This is however not universal especially if you really want to calibrate the cable on the calipers. Look at 1:27, the end is perfectly sitting on the lever in the OPEN position. After work on your breaks you might end up with a OPEN position you are not happy about. You wish the cable is little longer or little shorter. The following advice is to calibrate the OPEN position. Personally believe this can be done also electronically with some diagnostic device, but if you don't have it read below.
    Should you need to calibrate the OPEN EPB caliper position you need to adjust the length of the cable from EPB. The short normal Scenic II has the EPB mounted on the right above the rear wheel. There is only one cable going out, the left side of EPB is closed internally. You do not need to dismount EPB from the vehicle and/or open it. For Grand Scenic, I think you can do the same, however you will need to open both sides. As the EPB in Grand Scenic is mounted in the middle of the axle this might become too difficult. Following steps are tested on normal short Scenic II:
    1. Pull the emergency break opening lever in the boot.
    2. Unscrew the plastic nut on the right side of the EPB
    3. Pull out the cable from the EPB. This is possible as of step 2.
    4. Calibrate. Now you must turn the cable clockwise (for making the cable longer at the calipers) or anticlockwise (to make it shorter). This might bring some difficulty as the cable really must turn in the bowden from EPB down to the place where the cable forks to two calipers - in the middle of the axle. One turn is about 2 millimeters.
    5. Remember the emergency parking brake is now activated. Look to video 7.15. You must connect the pieces together however you don't see them as your EPB is mounted on the vehicle. Anyway this is relatively easy. You need to place the metallic square inside EPB. Now make the visible cable as long as you can by pulling it. Once ready swiftly push the cable in. Two or three tries and the mechanism inside locks.
    6. Put the plastic nut back and you are done.
    I wish there are two hidden buttons on the EPB to do this elegantly however there are none.

    A tip to keeping the EPB working is only apply the it (or turn the engine off) when you have your foot on the brake pedal, this makes it a lot less work for it and should make it last longer. I've had mine for 13 years without a problem.

    Hi
    I have the error ..
    It was -20 degree C .. when i put the breaks on it works only on the right back wheel .. the left wheel didnt engaged with the breaks ..
    are those one EPB for each side !?
    and dose the cold effect them !? do you know a quick fix .. !?

    Electronic parking brakes are a solution to a problem that nobody raised. What's wrong with a good old-fashioned lever and a couple of cables?

    Hello, my epb works without any problems, but still shows that it is defective. A relay clicks at the back, like a clock. Whenever I park the car with the brakes on. That drains my battery. What could be the mistake? It's a Renault Vel Satis. Thank you...

      It sounds like it is the brake calipers that is the problem. Not the EPB.

    Hi i have a Renault Laguna II from 2007. and Parking Brake Fault message showing up, but my parking brake works completely fine, i did bought a normal obd reader and when i plug it in i have no error message showing up. do you have any idea how i can get rid of the Parking Brake Fault message?

      Well that is a bit odd. Hard to tell what's wrong, you need to get a OBD reader Who can read The right protocols. A normal OBD can not read the EPB on renault.

      @@RotaruSergiu90 I know it's irrelevant now but for anyone else, I had a error come up but the epb worked fine. It turned out to be the left brake caliper wasn't releasing fully. I fitted a new caliper and everything is fine now.

    Just hired a 'new' Renault Scenic in Ireland for 2 weeks. The Electronic Parking Brake was useless (would not engage or disengage without multiple selections). Overall a poor experience

    The need for removing and opening this assembly may not be universally applicable.
    My 2003 Scenic have an emergency lever from within the spare wheel compartment that only operates an electrical switch. There is no action that forces wires to disengage from each other. So seems there are evolutions of this solution.

      Il dira au client " le module électronique est mort, il faut tout changer, ça coûte 1000 €".
      Dommage pour une paire de câbles à 20 € et/ou un relais à 5 €... ☺️

How did you took the wire apart in your video :7:34 to 8:20 you have skipped the part where i need it the most. I cannot rotate the wire. Please help me.       Hello. You have to unscrew the plastic cover marked with red arrow in The video. Then you can pull the wire to the right as far as it goes. After that you can screw the "cross" at the end of the wire clockwise.
