    I agree with the notion of some of the Primarchs where always destined to fall. The interesting thing about Angron (I forget where I read it) orginally he was an extremely powerful empath or was destined to be (his special ability if you will) but the Butcher's nails distroyed that and in turn he lost his Primarch "Aura" that left many Astartes in awe of their physical presence.

      I don't think this is true.
      I feel like Perturabo had all the roots in him to betray sooner or later anyways. He always felt underestimated by his brothers even though considering himself much more intelligent than all of them. The lack of recognition from his brothers and father is what turned him traitor mostly.
      And speaking of breaking the Iron Warriors' and Perturabo's spirit, this is kinda false, as this is one of the few legions that had never truly been broken and didn't really change even after turning heretic. Perturabo may have been the smartest of all the Primarchs, he understood what Horus was trying to do and only followed him because he agreed to betray, while despising Horus and his schemes.
      The only Primarch that was tricked by Horus was Russ, which led the to the betrayal of Magnus and his Thousand Sons.

    • @FlareKnight2

      @@Casimir2811 Horus Slowly broke both the iron warriors and Perturabo's spirit leading up to the start of the Horus Heresy, by giving them crap war assignments as well as the worst siege battles. The Horus Heresy: Primarchs book about Perturabo goes over a lot what happened to push Perturabo into betraying the emperor. The Iron warriors weren't always the doom and gloom legion they became at the start of the Heresy. Yes Both the legion and Primarch were methodical and unfeeling, but that's because of the way his mind worked.
      !Spoiler alert! For Perturabo: The Hammer of Olympia: Primarchs: The Horus Heresy
      After Perturabo finished purging his home planet of Olympia, he doubted the emperor would forgive him for purging the planet and Horus played on the doubt to convince Perturabo to join him in turning traitor. If Perturabo believed that was a chance that the emperor would have forgiven him for purging his home planet he would of remained loyal to the emperor and turned on Horus. While Perturabo had his doubts about the emperor, he was over all still loyal to him up to that point. Yes, while he and his legion were looked down upon and their strength was underestimated a few of his brothers saw what Perturabo was truly capable of.

      @lich109 Před rokem +2

      @@JagonathNo, they're very real with or without belief. The Emperor's plan had a lot of holes, for example while it weakened Chaos, it also came with a huge cost to the Psykers in Humanity, and in 40k there's a simple fact that humans are gradually evolving into a psychic race, which means that the Emperor's plans were bound to hit every roadblock possible, or be doomed to fail at some point regardless of what he tried. This is also without mentioning that warp entities (I mean stuff like Enslavers as well as daemons) do not require Psykers to make bargains with them, they just need to find a particularly strong Psyker with a weaker mind.

      To clarify my Dire Wolves are firstborn astartes instead of Primaris, though when they’re introduced, I haven’t fully settled on how Primaris Dire Wolves would be handled.
      For my Dire wolves due to some stories involved Endryd Haar and a few other black shield rogues during the heresy, my Dire Wolves are simply a hunter cadre of many others tasked with hunting down black shield, rogue elements. They essentially defected purging the ones still loyal to Horus and had to sit out the heresy due to thinking it better to not provoke a beast already on the war path. That’s sorta the long of short. Me utilizing something that’s possibly but highly unlikely and of course putting it in a hypothetical.

      Many philosophers have observed that this is the true, tragic nature of so much that we think of as evil - no matter how terrible their actions are in the judgement of history, very few individuals willingly and consciously undertake actions that they themselves see as evil for no reason. People always think their decisions, no matter how horrifying, are justified. That they pursue some higher purpose that will ultimately vindicate their choices. Add in the fact that Horus had assumed that he could bend the Ruinous Powers to his own will, and did not see the subtle ways in which they were warping his mind and corrupting his perceptions until it was far too late, and you can see how easily he could convince himself that he was on the 'right side of history'.
      Plus there is the fact that the Emperor himself was no sweetheart either, creating the Primarchs and the Astartes Legions to be used as disposable tools in pursuit of his own power, and thinking nothing of inflicting solar system wide genocide in order to secure his rule. The Emperor himself would also have viewed all those actions as wholly justified in pursuit of his higher goal, that he also saw as ensuring the survival of humanity. Ironically enough, a case can be made that the real problem was that Horus and the Emperor were too much alike in disposition and worldview in that regard. Like father like genes-son, with catastrophic results on a galactic scale.

    I think it's likely the Emperor was using the Primarchs and Space Marines as he used the Thunder Warriors and after the Great Crusade was planning on having them "die off" and be replaced with is final guardians of Mankind, the Custodians. This is why the relations between the Custodians and Space Marines is the way it is, they view them as relics that should have died off, but now due to current circumstances have decided instead to keep them going for now.

    • @Theeater126
      @Theeater126 Před 2 lety +1

      I doubt it. The thunder warriors were literally created to be expendable and instable, nothing but a momentary asset. The space marines were likely created to be eternal watchmen, meant to keep vigil over the imperium. This is why the space marines are actually taught skills, and know how to create art, act as diplomats, etc. I fully believe the Chaos gods just used the thunder warriors as a thread of doubt, and was nothing more than a way to bring fear into the primarchs and a belief that they would be thrown away. Unfortunately, we will never know the true.

    To be fair he was given no context and ended up on a world dedicated to emperor worship - but that doesn't change the fact he was tricked.
    Also, the current 40k setting is the chaos victory - if they actually "won" then nothing would be left to empower them - instead they have a galaxy permanently on thr brink, permanently at total war - they couldn't ask for more...

    4:30 - There USED to be loyalist Luna Wolves, but Horus went to great lengths to eliminate ANY within his own Legion that might have shown the LEAST bit of loyalty towards the Emperor. They were the ones who were wiped out during the Istvan-4 campaign. Only a few loyalists managed to escape (like Garviel and the Half-Heard) but they constituted only a fraction of a percent of the entirety of the Sons of Horus.

    The whole Horus Heresy is tragic and dare I say, philosophical. Horus's turn to chaos is a tragedy itself like Hamlet; and in a way he was played by the Chaos gods in showing him "the horrible future" he saw in which he needs to die to happen, to actually happen because of his wanting it to not happen. Ala, Fates/Destiny sort of thing. Also what's so appealing about 30K is that Space Marines are basically the Imperial Guard here, they are the line infantry. This is HALO on steroids instead of the monk-priest special forces type of 40K. Also there's 63+ books to read so....

    Many of the traitor Primarchs have reasons for turning traitor that we, as outside observers, can see for the tragic irony they are:
    -The whole vision quest Horus was sent on was a setup, especially since the potential future he was shown, where the Emperor was the god of mankind and Horus and the (future) traitor Primarchs were removed from all records, was basically the future we know as 40k.
    -Nigh Haunter is driven insane by his visions, because he believes that they are set in stone and can't be changed.
    -Mortarion was extremely distrustful of psykers and manipulated from multiple sides into siding with Horus under the pretense, that Horus would uphold the ban on psykers and the Emperor was the one making deals with daemons.
    -Angron was an empath, but the Butcher's Nails turned that against him in the worst way. The Emperor only saving him and leaving his warband to die definitely didn't help and is way up there as one of the biggest goofs big E did during the crusade alone.
    -Magnus tried to warn the Emperor but in doing so ruined his webway project. The Space Wolves were sent to retrieve him to Terra, but Horus changed the orders so Leman Russ thought he was sent to execute him. He was on the fence for most of the Heresy and only decided to side with Horus because he wanted the fragments of his soul back, the biggest of which was on Terra
    -At least a part of the grueling assignments given to Perturabo were given to him by Horus to increase his frustration. It's maybe worth noting that he actually really hated war, as far as I understand him. He had archives full of building plans for theaters, art galleries etc. and no indication that he'd ever get rid of his place in the imperial war machine.
    -Alpharius and Omegon are weird, given that it's not even clear if either of them truly turned traitor, were acting as double agents for the alien conclave (who though Horus would exterminate humanity if he won, removing the greatest source of power for Chaos) or actually for the Emperor.
    -Lorgar was primed to fall to Chaos by his adoptive father, and the Emperor doing another big goof when reprimanding him definitely didn't help either.
    Honestly, the only one I have a problem finding a really tragic angle is Fulgrim, at least with how little resistance he seemed to put up against the daemon in his sword corrupting and later temporarily possessing him.
    All of them went all in at some point during or after the Heresy though, so as tragic as it all is, they could have turned back at least for a while after the initial decision to turn traitor was made, even if it would have been at the cost of their lives, and probably the lives of their legions.
    It is worth noting that a lot of the reasons also include either very bad or a complete lack of communication from the Emperor to the respective Primarchs, starting with being honest with all of them regarding the whole Chaos thing and/or the plans he had for them after the crusade. Though some of the big goofs, like with Angron and Lorgar, go way beyond his bad communication.
    Him ruining his own plans at the last minute by distrusting reliable allies is a theme with him. It would be out of character for him to suddenly think his secrecy thing through at the last ditch effort that is called the great crusade.

  • @Furydragonstormer
    @Furydragonstormer Před rokem

    Angron's situation was worse than that due to the Butcher's Nails, and if he didn't have it, there was a likelihood he would've gone renegade still. Only difference, he's only standing against how the Emperor would be doing things, but otherwise still a staunch ally of humanity
