I finally got into Stax in October. I got some 007s and L500mk2. I read from one of the most respected amp builders that "the 717 is the best amp Stax ever made" so I got a used 717 for $900. It will drive anything. I also thought about going the transformer route but I haven't so far.

@@nothingelse1520 Not from him but i will be covering this in the next video in the mods as it relates to the next transformer im testing as someone already did the ground work on this and its freely available and easy to mod. Last time I looked, he was using the stock SRD transformers and for the price, simply aren’t worth it… They can certainly get you started but theres much better options out there in transformers land from Lundahl etc…
@@whatcouldgowrong7914 he just released an upgraded version with Lundahl transformers, on his site under used amps. Not sure if they are the same model as yours.
@@nothingelse1520 Good to hear as a custom chassis for a stock SRD transformer isn’t worth it. Likely hes using the same 1630PP which is a great transformer and well known for STAX use if you google how to make your own. Not perfect below 30Hz in my testing but honestly should be a non issue for 90% of folk given how loud they go still… I have much larger transformers coming that will beat them most likely but to sell them like he does… cost must he considered also….

Transformers are so worth it, haven’t tried a 717 but it’s great to be able to use big power amps for STAX use…
Wish we could hear them for ourselves, but that's the downside of the interweb :)
