I’m gonna be real, I’ve criticised these guys in the past and it’s embarrassing to say but I’ve only just realised all the things they do for the world game in Australia and it’s legacy which is not only amazing, but admirable on so many levels. I’ll admit I was stupid not to see this nor realise it earlier and I take regret in my short sighted criticisms I’ve made in the past. We should be all supporting you guys so thank you Foss and Lucy! You guys honestly deserve a medal along with the crew there in Russia

Zelic isn't exactly inspiring but she's a great MC. Can't recall a single clanger from her so she obviously knows a bit about the game. And what Australian in their right mind doesn't love the Silver Fox? He's a top shelf _special comments_ man.

Putting on exotic accents is unnecessary when pronouncing foreign names and words. I don't expect foreigners to talk with Australian accents when pronouncing Australian names and places. It's political correctness gone mad.
If foreigners decide to migrate to Australia, and then endlessly whinge when SBS presenters don't adjust their accents to their liking then what kind of Australians will they make?

I teach and I always make sure to get student's names right. It just shows respect and that they matter as a person, as an individual. It makes me sad when they tell me that I'm the only one that says their name right.
Not a football fan in the past but the additional information, analysis etc. that both Lucy and Craig provide, before during and after a broadcast, add so much to the experience for the uninitiated. Continue on as you are and ignore the "knockers", we seem to have plenty in Australia, your efforts are appreciated.
Lucy's explanation stole the show, here. I have confidence in her conviction. I am also sometimes laughed at when I try and say things properly, respectfully. Having lived overseas for a time, you try and learn things properly, then get mocked for it when returning home. That's Australia for 'ya'..!

SBS' coverage has been phenomenal this World Cup, extremely professional. Great hosting by Lucy and great insight on the game by Fozz. How could anyone criticize it?
I have always appreciated the work you guys always do and thank you all at SBS for the great effort covering not only the world cup but everything we love to watch on this great channel.
Keep doing what you are doing you two, even if you do muck up a couple words, the point is you make an effort to get it right and that's what counts! Awesome watching you two and I hope to see this partnership in future presentations of the world game
What a sad reflection of a nation where a huge portion of the population are within 2-3 generations of a long ass boat ride from distant lands, & have probably been annoyed at mis-pronunciation of their family names in the past, for criticising someone celebrating & showing respect to the cultural diversity of the World Cup. Thankfully it's a minority who can be ignored & the coverage will continue.

The commentary and analysis by Lucy and Foss this World Cup has been brilliant.
As an on-again / off-again football fan you can get dismayed by the FIFA corruption, the diving, the ref inconsistency, etc. but you can also get enthralled by the skill, the passion, the cumulative story of the people who play the game and I think SBS have always done a tremendous job at highlighting the best parts of the game. Even more so this World Cup!
SBS is a multicultural channel and remains one of the best channels to watch. Growing up, it gave me great pride when people took the time to pronounce my name correctly. Keep up the good work.

When I heard people were making comments about it all - I was shocked with sadness. But the strength and solidarity Lucy has shown with the SBS team is commendable. I completely share the sentiments of Lucy Zelic & Craig Foster. as a kid of immigrant parents I always got annoyed when people couldn't or wouldn't pronounce my name properly. I kept correcting them and urged them to pronounce it properly eventually I gave up and settled it was just to tiresome to keep correcting them. its great to have TV presenters that know and try to pronounce culturally diverse names and countries properly . that's one of the legacies that Les Murray left behind besides its SBS so its expected too. Congratulations to all on this years WC coverage in Russia. PS love the Adidas shirts one of the perks of having adidas as a sponsor of broadcast. 👍👍👍👏👏👏

+Claudia NL agree with your comment. in English or Anglo speaking countries your name is pronounced Cl o dia. the letter A is not pronounced. its part of the oddness of English language. A is silent. my name is similar to yours in that all the letters are pronounced and the letter A is pronounced in a European way not Anglo way. my surname is more difficult.
I'm Australian born and previously lived in England, but I have Austrian heritage too, and several German and Swiss - German friends...so I pronounce Claudia with an "ow" sound between the l and the d. Does that differ from Spanish dialects?
+MrMmnngghh I think so. its how the A and the U are pronounced. depends on how u pronounce the ow. if its like the word Owl where the letter O is pronunced like a A then I think its OK. reply to Claudia's comment to my initial comment and u can get a more accurate answer . thanks for taking interest.
But just out of curiosity, if you get annoyed with people who pronounce your name incorrectly, do you also pronounce other peoples name correctly all the time ? Eg. do you pronounce Chinese names with proper Chinese accents ?

Nothing wrong with respecting the tradition of SBS television and it's broadcasting of the world game. Lucy is pretty good broadcaster and host and is heaps better than Mel McLaughlin. People are criticizing her for pronunciations being over the top should pull their head in and get over it. The great Les Murray would say the say thing to people. Respecting his legacy and tradition of the world game which he put so much into. I reckon all creds to Lucy and Foss for putting this to air. SBS should have broadcasting rights to all soccer including the ALeague.
Agree with that. Dont know if SBS will cover the world cup again with the lack of funds they get. I got the feeling that Foxtel and 9 or 7 will get the next one in Qatar which is a pity as SBS has covered the world cup well since 1986 I recall and the big tournaments with Les Murray at the forefront.
One of the highlights of this World Cup is to tune in to watch Lucy and Fos, ultimate professionals to my mind. SBS my fav channel.

SBS coverage of football is first class. I enjoy hearing other pronunciations of team names. To me it shows respect and a willingness to learn about other countries.
I looked up "La Celeste" and "Die Mannschaft" to find out the different names given to their national teams after hearing them on SBS. No other coverage in Australia shows the level of research or respect that SBS does when covering the world game.
Quality coverage from Fozz man is a genius. Les would be proud.
I like their insights and laid back style. Their smooth, no frills delivery, is the perfect way to ease into a marathon world cup session.

As an Aussie who has spent many years travelling the world, speaking people's language the way THEY speak their language is simple respect. Zelic was doing her job not just as a journalist but as an ambassador. Aussies who expect her to speak like a yob need to go back to 7, 9 or 10. SBS and ABC have higher standards than that.

When I used Optus for the premier league, not only the quality was just an absolute joke (sounds familiar 😁😁😁) but presenting the games weren't much chop either. So when ever SBS was hosting a Liverpool match it wasn't hard choose which I prefer. You guys are setting up what already is a great legacy thanks to Lez. Keep doing what you r doing.

Craig is the epitome of a gentleman. His professional attitude to explaining the situation is perfect, I know of other hosts who would have simply fired back in anger calling their critics idiots and so on but Craig doesn't do that, he explains his view point and presents his argument. A very respectable man, not only does he represent Australia well but he is a role model.

I remember Les Murray said on a world of soccer episode that he never knew he had an accent until someone pointed it out to him. I was born here and the same thing happened to me! Here I am thinking I have a Mick Dundee accent and someone pointed out that i sound like Habib from fat pizza SMH :D Lucy Zelic has done a fantastic job. No one deserves to be treated like shit because of the way they talk.
