  • It's anticipated that the new defenses will guide any potential overflow of the thin-flowing lava away from the town. These defenses will be constructed alongside the existing rampart designated as L12, where lava accumulation has reached significant levels, surpassing the height of the walls in some areas.
Jón Haukur Steingrímsson, a geoengineer at Efla, explains, "What we do is move about 120 meters to the side and just lay down another line," The objective is that if lava breaches one barrier, another will intercept it, redirecting its course away from the town.
As lava started gathering at the existing walls by late April, it became evident that action was imperative. There's a finite extent to which the current defenses can be heightened.
"Because for every meter that rises, there is more width and more material needed - and then maybe at some point it is easier to just move and start over," says Jón Haukur.

This camera is situated on the southern tip of Þorbjörn. Þorbjörn is a 243 m high volcanic mountain next to the town of Grindavík. The camera is usually pointed Northeast at the erupting volcano but may occasionally pan north or south to observe other features of the area. It is about 2km away from the erupting volcano.

What can be done, must be done. It is ever only an experiment with unknown finish

They’re certainly working faster there than they do in the U.S. on highway repair projects! 👏👏👏

Apparently spraying water on the edge of a lava flow doesn't create a berm.
