ASMR Bike Build: Vintage Raleigh Mixte commuter bike

- 1970's Raleigh stripped down to the bare metal, new primer, new paint, 2 stage clear coat. New 7 speed freewheel with a 7 speed microshift rear derailleur. Replaced the friction shifters with Shimano indexed trigger shifters and gave it new origin 8 brake levers and a set of black lock on grips. The result? A retro ride with modern shifting and road feel. Original doo wop soundtrack recorded in Soundtrap.

This is a great restoration. The addition of new shifting and brake levers were all it needed for modern quality of life functions.

You kept the cotter pin cranks, as someone who grew up riding bikes with cotter pin cranks I can't say I hate them because it has grown into something far far darker than that. Great build though 😃
Haha yeah I can’t say they were a welcome surprise but was trying to keep the original look with the cranks. Hopefully they aren’t giving the new owner too much trouble.
The Woodbridges gave me one of this in 1982 when in U.K. forever grateful to them. Siaw
Well done including decent paint. Glad you took the trouble to replace the Raleigh decals which finishes it off looking great. I like Mixte frames generally, that particular Raleigh bike got lucky.

Enjoyed the video. I bought that same bike, in blue, a year ago. I have yet to touch it. But I plan to put on a seven speed derailleur. the dreaded Tourney, but I have three or four almost new ones plus freewheels in my parts box. The freewheels will fit the Raleigh wheels?
Plan on new tires. New brake pads. Trigger shifters. Leather seat and faux leather grips. Repack all the bearings.
The 7 speed freewheel barely fit. I may have had to dish the wheel to one side. Unfortunately there aren’t a lot of 6 speed trigger shifters out there. Good luck with your build and thanks for watching!

Awesome looking build! I'm actually considering buying an 80s Raleigh Mixte from a classified ad. Do you have any recommendations for typical problem areas to check on these bikes?
If you plan on modernizing any of the drivetrain make sure you have the right tools, i think I had to pretty much destroy the original freewheel to remove it as I couldn’t find the proper tool available. I think same goes for the bottom bracket.

Dude you could have removed the old paint completely with paint remover and please don't change the friction shifter with those plastic shifter, it's takes away the very essence of the bike.. Anyways it was very pleasing to see you work
Yeah using paint remover on another bike, but will probably still need to use the paint remover disc on the angle grinder. As for the friction shifters, I know a lot of people out there are all about the restoration of these bikes, but I still think they are a pain to use. Thanks for watching!

Awful music man, so irritating. everything was ok until 27:30 when you started putting on those modern parts. Then I stopped watching...Besides, the bike is really nice.

Anoying soundtrack
The music was enough to curb my interest. Someone's sence of timing is way off. Too annoying to watch.
Just a word of caution, it's not really ASMR if you have music playing in it. So a lot of people searching for ASMR might be giving you thumbs-downs.
