I'm a self taught amateur bike mechanic that enjoys restomodding and building up bikes in my spare time. After watching videos by Oldshovel and Monkeyshred I decided to give it a try during the pandemic. I like to build unique builds, if you can buy it off the shelf it's not for me. Dream builds are cool and all but who has the money for that? Give me an old, weird, unique bike that no one else has or would even think to build any day of the week. All bikes on this channel are for sale. Local sales in the San Francisco Bay Area only.
ASMR Bike Build: Miyata Triple Cross
Found this Miyata Triple Cross on the side of the road buried under some bushes and garbage. Loved the original paint job and decals but had a lot of rust. Decided to embrace the flaws and was inspired by kintsugi, the art of repairing pottery with gold. Forgot to film all the rust grinding, sorry. Oh and as a bonus this is using sheldon brown's practice of 8 of 9 on 7. Using 8 cogs of a nine speed drivetrain on a 7 speed hub.
FSA Compact Adventure bars, Microshift Advent 9 speed drivetrain, WTB Volt saddle, Mavic wheels, Panaracer Gravel King tires, Shimano 300LX cranks, promax stem, original seatpost, bottom bracket, wheels, frame. Tange headset pulled from 80's cannondale m500.

ASMR Bike Build: Frame Swapping: All City Mr. Pink

What do you do when your Gravel Daddy is hit by a car? Frame swap! Swapped as many parts as I could to the new frame but the 650b wheels didn’t fit with the long reach brakes so I had to go back to the 700c wheels and cane creek brakes with the 32m panaracers. Also had to get a new seatpost and press fit bb30 bottom bracket adapter to use the 105 cranks. Swapped the whiskey parts co fork for an...

I have the same bike and maybe the same year as its the same colour scheme but mine has the old school shifters on the down tube.
Oh man, do you shift a lot with those down tube shifters?
lol, dude, the music, not really asmr.
You kept the cotter pin cranks, as someone who grew up riding bikes with cotter pin cranks I can't say I hate them because it has grown into something far far darker than that. Great build though 😃
Haha yeah I can’t say they were a welcome surprise but was trying to keep the original look with the cranks. Hopefully they aren’t giving the new owner too much trouble.
just wondering whats the total weight, nc vid thou!
At time of filming it weighed 17.4 lbs. I did a write up of it here: rideloose.bike/caad-13/ Right now it’s closer to 16lbs as I’ve continued to upgrade it.
Such a nice bike! How's it holding up today?
It’s still riding great. I’ve upgraded a few parts since the initial build too. Ultegra groupset, sisl2 cranks, ee brakes, hed wheels, carbon bars, latex tubes, carbon cages and time pedals.
@@RideLooseBikes Damn Ultegra groupset, that's awesome! Bet the shifting is smooth and the bike rips
Yeah very fun going up and down the hills! I’ll have to post a vid with the updates.
Dont they call em hybrids now
Shhhhhh 😂
Beautifully put together. Do you still have it? How has it been?
Thanks, I no longer own it, but I used it to train for a KOM nearby. It was a blast to ride and my first (and only) carbon bike.
@@RideLooseBikes spotted a frame a my LBS. My size. Any suggestions on components I could build with? Would like to keep them within $1500
I was able to keep this build under $1300. Just gotta find some deals. Used groupsets are a good place to start.
@@RideLooseBikes Thank you. Will start
I’m getting this today
This is a great restoration. The addition of new shifting and brake levers were all it needed for modern quality of life functions.
Is it 130mm width rear hub? and how width is the inner width of rims?
The hub in the rear wheel is 135mm but the frame is 130mm. Steel frame was compliant enough to make it work. Not sure if the inner width of the rims.
For a 5'9 guy what size of bike fits best? Nice bike. Im interested on similar bike.
Really depends on a number of factors, but if you’re buying an older bike like this finding the right stand over height is a good place to start. I have a 32” inseam and prefer a 58cm because I have a longer torso at 6’2”. So you could be on a 52-54 or a small or medium. Just give it a test ride first before ya buy it.
how much can I sell it? I have the same one
I don’t know, I still have it. I picked it up for $100 during the pandemic. Prices have gone down lately though.
Top notch
Thanks for watching!
Love that you turned the blemishes into gold. Stunning way to honor the bike's legacy and keep it putting on miles long into the future. You give me hope for the Peugeot and Raleigh I've got waiting for some TLC in my garage.
Thanks it was a lot of fun to try something new!
So a gravel bike 🤭
No need to spend $$$$
Wow! The rusty bike was extremely similar to my bike. Same lugged frame type even the color, same Exage derailleurs, cantilever brakes, etc. Maybe they made these bikes in the 1990s and rebranded them depending on the customer. I liked the gilding and changing from a 7 to 9 speed. (I would have kept the front derailleur.) You showed that with a little work you can make trash into treasure.
Thanks for watching!
Beautiful, but why havent you chosen a downpull fd?
Would have been nice, but this is the one I had laying around 🤷🏽. Thanks for watching!
What was the weight after and frame size?
This is the large frame. The whole bike weighs 23lbs. A bit heavier than expected but I didn’t account for sealant when I planned it.
Fun Fact: MTB components are also good for gravel. No need to buy into gravel specific stuff. Mind blowing!
I found a lime green 1992 Ascent EX nearby a few dumpsters in a parking lot down the street, unfortunately it had a snapped chainstay tube although I was able to salvage a mint Made in Japan Shimano sealed BB , budget 1X sun tour cranks and a rigid Kona Project 2 straight fork. Funny thing is the bike had a California registration plate that expired in 1995 ….meanwhile I’m way up north in Canada , my oh my if bikes could tell stories.
Nice score! Yeah I bought this one in Seattle and I found out it was from a bike shop in California.
Thats neat, im just across the border from Seattle in Vancouver@@RideLooseBikes
Very nice. Mixtes are cool. That crank looks great on it.
Thanks 👍

Cantilever brakes would feel better, try them if you can
Thanks for the tip, never really ridden them before. I'll clean up the original ones and see how they ride.
this will be a better ASMR bike build video without the music bro
Thanks for watching anyways!
I had to turn it off
your choice of background of "CHEESY FKN MUSIC" STINKS
Great concept, lousy piano track....
Thanks for enduring through my piano skills.
@@RideLooseBikes I shouldn't have complained. Good for you for making a nice video, love the bike!
rim brakes wont work on those wheels
They do, they are rim brake rims with disc brake hubs, you can pick em up at universal cycles, but thanks for watching!
Impressive job 🫶
Thanks! Love your channel!
@@RideLooseBikes thanks a lot 🤜🤛
beautiful build! what is the bronze paint you used for the rusty parts? are you satisfied with the result?
Thanks! It’s just Testors gold enamel paint. Build is good, used it on vacation all summer. Wheels probably could use a good trueing though.
Good job! Nice towels too! 😂
Nothings cleans shit up like old underwear.
Its not ASRM with the cheesy music playing.
i disagree
how was it possible to have road bike bottom bracket with mtb crankset with no recommeded spacers? great build tho
Oh there are spacers in there. Might have left that shot out though. Thanks for watching!
I would lose the extension levers and the stem mount shifters. The levers don’t work as well s the main brake levers and downtube shifters won’t get knocked out of gear.
I use black bar tape to wrap my chainstay as well :)
Cyclocross tires
I mean they are Panaracer gravel kings 🤷🏽
Thanks for the info on the tektro brakes. Luckily, just what I've been searching for!
Worst front mech routing ever.
Yeah, might be adding some braze ones soon. Thanks for watching!
xBiking community will love this.
Cool bike! What the tire clearance would be with 700c? And what's the wheel model? My 90s road bike have very similar specs at the moment, but I'm stuck with 25c tire at the back trying to fuguring out if 650b is the way to go or the clearance improvment would be minimal
It’s a comfortable 32c with 700c wheels. The frame I used mid reach brakes though so it has a bit more clearance, similar to older road bikes. I’d guess you’d be able to get a bit more with 650b wheels but hard to know if your frame would work with the long reach brakes without knowing the frame. Check out the link in the description for the blog post with all the build components. Thanks for watching!
There's a category for that--"fitness bike."
Definitely built to be a dad bike. Which are usually hybrid fitness bikes. Thanks for watching!
That looks like it'll be a beast on gravel
Yes! When I find some true gravel (not double track) it’s been a fun ride. Thanks for watching!
Love tue Soundtrack!

Read this to find out why: rideloose.bike/building-a-rat-bicycle-road-frame-with-mountain-bike-parts/
Isn't the gearing too low for the application?
Been using it to haul my kids in a trailer. No amount of gearing is too low for me 😂
Nice. I have a complete 2-star on the way. l plan to convert it to SS when it arrives, transfer my XT cranks and discs from my previous build, and sell off the SX components from the Niner. The complete bike will set me back ~$700 in the end and I'll have $$$ left over for a nice Industry Nine or DT Swiss rear hub. Can't wait.
Are you going to use an eccentric bb?
@@RideLooseBikes That's the plan, although not a perfect solution. I've been on a Vassago Jabberwocky for years now and it has classic track ends with their own set of issues. Mainly you can't change gears out without ending up on the extremes of the track ends or changing the chain length. They also require fairly high clamp loads to stay put. I love that bike, but it rides like limo with the 70 degree head angle. It turns well, but you always need to keep the weight back. High speed cornering gets sketchy. But mainly, the 135mm rear spacing, 27.2 seatpost, 68mm BB, and 1-1/8 straight steerer with external cups, make upgrades difficult and hard to rationalize.
Oof yeah sounds like you are long overdue for an upgrade!
@@RideLooseBikes I installed a Wheels Manufacturing EBB. So far its flawless and no creaks at all. The EBB pressed in easier than it was to remove the SRAM DUB PF30. Knocked the DUB out with a piece of PVC pipe and sledge, and got the EBB 95% seated with my palm and the bolts doing the rest.
great, congratulations. Electric vehicle A big difference Its power is very strong. it is very compact. Can you tell me how wide the tire is? What is the maximum tire width for those brakes? I want to build a bike like this but don't know where to buy electric wheels. What type of battery should I use? After completing it, I don't know if I can register the license plate or not. Thank. Have fun 😂😂😂😂
I have a road frame with mtb parts I bought it new in 1996. They just called it a mountain bike back then.
haha
Love it!!! Three questions: What headset & fork are you running? What width tyres? What are the max width tyres for those brakes? OH, and start a Patreon 😉
The fork is the one that came with the retrospec frame (a cheap heavy commuter bike I bought 5 years ago) but the headset is a richey logic. I’m running 47mm 650b WTB byway tires. It’s the max the frame could fit. Not sure the max on the brakes. You do have to deflate the tire quite a bit to get the wheel off so I wouldn’t go bigger. I’ll get on the patreon once I can commit to consistent video schedule. OH, and thanks for watching!
@@RideLooseBikes Mate, you're an inspiration. I can't stop building bikes despite my Wife's desperate pleas to stop. I just have to stop riding them and find new homes for them. What do you do with your completed builds?
