I liked how Soto just walked off like "okay, that was nice" pure respect great battle
A true gentlemens Match
You can tip your hat like man or cry like a baby and complain to the ump yhat the 1st pitch was a ball
Carrying on Miggy's legacy
Best part about baseball
Personally I liked the close up on Soto's crotch shimmy to close the video
Battle ends with both of them smiling, good stuff. That pitch variety is nuts, how could a batter get comfy ever.
Future teammates that’s why
They smiling at each other like “ we gonna be teammates dawg”
that's a nasty pitch at 95mph, total gangster
@@xxCANTSTOPMExx hahahaha😐
@@SoupLegion which one? The second pitch (fb) had some cut bc of arm angle and grip. The fifth pitch (fb) was classic four seam but set up beautifully as explained by Jomboy.
This is classic, old school pitching. It also shows what an amazing hitter soto is. The fact that he didnt swing at that 2-2 change up is crazy.
Soto is good player on the plate hard to put away
Estos bateadores están acostumbrados a la recta a gran velocidad.....si los trabajas con diferentes lanzamientos, les puedes hacer mucho daño, si le lanzas puras rectas Ellos te conectan con Facilidad...

Never been a huge baseball guy but jomboy breaking down stuff that really paints a picture of the mindgames and intricacies of the game have given me a newfound love for the sport
Absolutely! I’m here wondering if batters really process all this info when they’re at bat. I’m just a “keep my eye on the ball as it comes” type of guy at my co-Ed softball league for beer lovers. 😂
Couldn’t agree more.
Same!
@@Lbyt21 Oh sure, a huge part of being a hitter is anticipating what pitch is coming next. Paying close attention to the pitcher and his mannerisms can make a big difference
@@sneersh9107 its why pitchers have to be 100% careful with every move they make on the mound so they don't tip their pitches because hitters, especially Soto, are always looking for tells on what pitch is coming by examining the pitcher the entire game.
If you ever need to explain to someone why pitching is an art form and why hitting is so hard, show them this video.
Who says hitting in the majors is easy? Also, who isn’t in absolute awe of a dude who can throw a change up faster than 96% of the entire population can throw their fastest?
@@saljablo2767 Normals
Hitting is ridiculously hard because it’s not enough to just hack at the ball and make contact
You have to make the right KIND of contact, you have to launch the ball at a good angle with the right amount of exit velocity to actually get hits/not groundout or pop up/fly out
@@saljablo2767 a LOT of people that don’t watch baseball think it’s incredibly easier than it really is.
@@ifbfmto9338 and then u have to worry about these type of player that plays tricks on you, and as a batter have to pay attention and gather information quick to guess the next pitch.
Man I'm glad Urias is on the Dodgers..his pitching in the WS to seal the win was pure nails. Like he has ice water going through his veins. Fun pitcher to watch as well. Like this break down.
Urías absolutely dropped dick to close out the Braves in Game 7 of the 2020 NLCS as well. I believe he was perfect in the multi inning saves to close out both series.
Urias was a stone cold killer... Stone cold.
@@dkchen Still is! 5-0, 0.87 ERA since the All-Star Break!
@@elsongs Yeah he had a slow start this season, but he is killing it. Probably up there on the most underrated pitcher.

Thank you for showing some love to Julio!!! One of my favorite pitchers to watch lately.
HE IS A JOKE......
I wonder if Jomboy understands how much these breakdowns enhance the game-watching experience? I've gotten to where when I see a strange play I try to see it from a Jomboy perspective.
Nearly on par with 90s Sportcenter, & that's as close to sacrilege as I'm likely to get.
Nowadays SportCenter SUCKS
@@levimiller5686 - WokeCenter
@@levimiller5686 totally agree, I can't watch it.
I was always of the opinion that baseball was boring and wrote it off until I started watching these, now I'm fascinated
While I still think Finnish baseball is more entertaining to watch, Jomboy's videos have definitely increased both my understanding of and my appreciation for the American variety.

It was funny but having a Mexican dude would've been way better
Homeboy has made me appreciate baseball so much over the years. It’s crazy how much this CZcams page has helped me understand the sport a little more.
Wonder if he changed arm slots throwing hands on that lady🎉
Top breakdown this year. Love the detailed explanations even without them saying a word it all perfectly syncs.
Agreed. Never been through anything like this before. Pure pleasure.
Similar to the one he did about the Yankees changing the way they frame pitches
still got some lip reading.. *poooota madre*
Julio said: "PUTA MADRE". That's two words.
Shows how extremely impressive some of these guys are.
Pitching is an artform.
Well said
People complain about the lack of 100+ pitch complete games, 5+ day starting rotations, increase in pitcher injuries, and also the change in offense to ‘3 true outcomes’… it all comes back to modern pitching being a peak athletic form.
Breakdowns like these are seriously the best sports commentary I've ever seen. Its not hard to talk about a remarkable or quirky play, but watching a deep dive into an at bat like this really deepens my love of the game.
Flawless breakdown sir. Bringing in the sub for the Latino accent is one of the reasons you’re the best Jimmy. MLB is better because of you shining your spotlight on the intricacies of baseball most people don’t see. Reminding me of why I played for ten years as a kid.
a normal human like me would never pick up on the arm angle. that's why these guys are pros!! level of difficulty for both hitting and pitching at that level is insane..my god that was a great breakdown..
Sometimes it's not just arm angle, you can also sometimes read what a pitch might be just by how open/closed their glove looks when they're getting set. Strasburg was tipping pitches that way when they were on their World Series run a few years back.
I feel like it’d be very noticeable as a batter getting different arm angle releases. Because it’s not only changing where he releases the ball but the angle the ball is traveling. As a batter tracking the ball from release to the plate your going to notice 2 completely different angles. Not taking away from them being pros they’re great.
@@rodneybryant6084 Just fuggin track the ball and swing. Not that difficult.
(Yes, I have 1 year of T-Ball experience)
it's their job. i bet you could recognize arm angles and stuff after a week of professional batting practice where you have all sorts of data and analytics on opposing pitchers. your reaction speed would be the limiting factor, not your eyesight.
Learn the game 🤦🏽♂️
I like the Spanish lip reading. Nice addition. Wouldn’t mind seeing some more of that. Keep up the great work Jomboy. You guys are the best!!
What did it mean?
@@samuelorozco255 he said motherfcker
@@samuelorozco255 Puta Madre is often used in the same context as mother fucker
@@samuelorozco255 its an experssion that shows frustration like "Damn it" but like someone else said in the comments. Litteral translation is "Bitch Mother"
@@samuelorozco255 “puta madre” is short for “la puta que lo parió”. And means “the whore that gave him birth”. In any case this is not directed at Solo by any means. It’s just out of sheer frustration of best efforts not giving results. It is very common and not as rude as it sounds.
Hold on, your name is orozco and you don’t understand this? lol you need to brush up on your Spanish mijo.
This is the best batter/hitter matchup i've seen this year. It's just tactics versus raw ability and its beautiful. I knew he was gonna slot the arm higher for a back to back fastball down the middle as his strike out pitch. I'm intrigued by this, I wonder if it's hard on the arms of pitchers to fluctuate their arm slot a lot.
It's hard to consistently hit your spot if you change your mechanics too much.
Urias is so damn good! Glad the Dodgers kept him. Because I know so many teams wanted him when he was still in the minors, Dodgers FO stayed firm. I don't think the Dodgers win that WS without him. Hopefully the Dodgers can get him some more run support this season.
That Joez cameo was legendary
PUTA MADRE
What did he says?
@@rajivsingh7378 "Puta Madre", the literal translation would be "B*tch Mother" I guess but it's an expression equivalent to an Aussie saying "F*ck me dead" or a Brit saying "Bloody hell". It expresses anger/disbelief in a vulgar way.
@@rajivsingh7378 Whore Mother. It’s a pretty strong Mexicanism. In this context, I’d go with “fucking hell”. In other contexts, it can be more like “Oh SHIT!” There’s kind of a cult of the mother in Mexico, from your mom to the Virgen de Guadalupe. The Virgen is the patron saint of Mexico, serving as both the mother of Mexico and the Mother of God.
It’s kind of like the Mexican version of Aloha.

Never really understood baseball until i started watching Jomboys vids, and still learning lol. Much more to the game than i knew. I always wondered why batters never swing at everything, lots of mind games trying to guess where the ball is going
I saw that game and that was a great moment to break down. Urias is, in every sense of the word, cool. Love that kid.
One of the best breakdowns yet. What an absolute dogfight. When a beast like Soto comes to the plate, who doesn’t any sort of big exploitable weaknesses, you’ve just gotta bring your best stuff and hope it’s enough. This time it worked!
With bonus joez mcfly
@Victor Alvarez it all balances out in the end. Urías had the most wins last season in the NL and many had abismal run support. Not so much this year.
I gotta admit, you bring a lot of respect to the game and show people the amount of personality their is in the game. I think we can thank you for a bit of the resurgence in baseball.
Jomboy and pitching ninja have done a better job promoting the game the last 5 years or so than MLB itself has in the last 2 decades.
This is why I love baseball. The pitcher -- batter MIND GAMES. Most people just see guy throw ball, other guy hit ball. But it's so much more deeper than that.
It’s amazing how much more there is to baseball when you breakdown every pitch. Watching it through a screen live it’s great and all but to really see a breakdown like this just makes the game that much better
Just perfection in entertaining analysis. Appreciate this so so much.

ohhhh man thank you for breaking this down! This is one of the BEST BEST breakdowns EVER! I love these battles and these little mind games they do to each other with arm slots and such! It's why I love watching pitchers all my life, and as a kid my dad told me something very similar and we always looked for the arm slot and different types of motions each pitcher would do and try to throw off batters and/or telegraph to batters.
So glad you did this one. Watching this during the game was awesome, everyone was completely dialed in on the battle and knew it was something slightly different than the usual pitcher-batter battle. Great stuff
“Oh tricks that’s what we’re doing? Ok!” Jomboy on his A game today
Just shows u Urias is a smart pitcher. Sometimes you see an at bat where a hitter is fouling off every pitch but you just keep seeing the pitcher work at the same pace and never change his arm angle. What happens eventually is usually a hard hit ball most of the time.
Right. Few pitchers would have got the strike out, the majority would have given up a HR after so many pitches in the same location.
Nestor Cortez been doing this shit lol
@@freddiebenson-_-926 Cy young Nestor
Gotta respect Urias' skill. A lot of pitchers can't change arm angle at will like that without the rest of their mechanics going to hell. They're lucky enough if they don't hurt themselves, never mind throwing a strike. Pitching is probably the toughest part of baseball. Hats off to Urias for putting on a clinic here.
@@freddiebenson-_-926 bro, I watch that Nestor vs Shohei breakdown at least once a month and I'm fucking crying laughing. 🤣
Shohei's face like "dafuq, dude?" Just kills me. You gotta give him props. It ain't crazy/stupid if it works.
Great video editing here, overlaying the arm motion, showing the pitch trajectory, seeing the hitter’s batting form - just well done. Vocal explanations are like icing on that cake.
Soto is such a great energy. It’s fantastic.
It was a great at bat. Both incredible players. Go Dodgers!
boo dogers
Come on Dodgers! Get Soto from your Nationals Farm team. Guy is amazing. What is he 22? Kid is a massive talent.
So much fun watching the great ones face off
I was at that game, and that battle live was amazing to see (I'm talking about the reactions from Soto and Urias), but appreciate Jomboy breaking it down to see what really went down and explains why there was the theatrics between both of them. I appreciate it Jomboy, good stuff!
Such a great moment, such a great breakdown. When you show Jomboy to your friends, this is the one you're supposed to watch first.
People who don't follow baseball or even people who do would not notice some of these interactions and/or battles. Like Yogi Berra once said, "Baseball is 90% mental. The other half is physical." These are so interesting to watch. Thanks Jomboy for showing us the nuances of these at-bats.
I love me some yogi Berra isms
Dodgers are my favorite team. And Urias is such a great pitcher.
That loop of the "Soto shuffle" (aka letting your nuts swing) along with the Manscaped promo at the end was just..... *chef's kiss* a fucking cherry 🍒 on top of this perfect cake and ice cream of a breakdown.
As a cricket lover you made me watch and love this game respect.
Really happy you did this breakdown Jimmy. I watched it live and was just so enthralled. Dodgers announcers were all over the arm angle stuff too. Made it really enjoyable
Jotrelle is coming along nicely
Your breakdowns make me understand and appreciate baseball more with every video.
Commenting to boost your engagement and say that this is top tier Jomboy for me. I like a lot of stuff you put out, but this kind of video is where you're at your absolute best, imo. Thanks for making it!
What makes baseball so much fun for players is that every single pitch is loaded with anticipation.
The part where Joez came in for the lip read had no business being as funny as it was 💀
Until Jomboy learns Spanish, which he really should, he needs more Joez
Love the Soto breakdowns! Guys great for baseball
These little battles during games are everything and Jomboy breakdowns of them are flawless
Been watching Jimmy since the Astros scandal, and this has to be the best breakdown yet. It's funny that some people think baseball is boring.
Baseball is “boring” in the same way that chess is “boring.” The most interesting parts of the game aren’t obvious to the casual observer; you have to have some knowledge before you can truly appreciate it.
Fascinating stuff, makes me appreciate the game further.
Urias has been doing this since 2016!
It's interesting that in today's pitching environment, teams really stress pitchers keeping a consistent arm slot. It's the complete opposite of the thought process from back in the day. As an example, in "The Science of Hitting," Ted Williams talks about how having multiple arm slots for every pitches effectively increases your pitch repertoire. He believed if a guy threw 3 pitches, but could throw each of them from 2 arm slots, the pitcher essentially had 6 pitches.
He's right, but that's also *why* teams stress keeping the consistent arm slot. Very few pitchers are capable of throwing more than three good pitches, so it comes down to whether or not you want your guys to focus really hard on being able to repeat the three good pitches they have really well, or throw more pitches less well. I think 100% of pitching coaches in the major and minor leagues would prefer to have their guys focus on quality over quantity in their repertoires, but there will always be some freaks for whom the normal rules don't apply.
@@jawbone78 Oh sure, and obviously today's pitchers and analytics are superior, in general. It's just interesting to see the accepted wisdom change over time.
This breakdown of the battle between pitcher and batter makes me appreciate the nuances in a way that would otherwise go unnoticed. Thanks man!
Good stuff. Imagine if Urías adds an offspeed out of that drop-down slot? Lights out.
Now, do Lux getting sac-tapped! Third time this season a Dodger's been tapped. What gives?!
A cutter would be a good addition as well. Specially for lefties like Soto, they would get jammed every time.
When Urias is in command of his stuff he's insane. Great battle acknowledged by both players 🤝🏼
I love these breakdowns of at bats like this. As a very casual baseball fan who mostly got into it because of your vids this is the stuff that makes me appreciate the sport
Love how much I’m learning. Every sport needs a jomboy.
I would have loved to see Jose' Fernandez pitching to Soto. He was another guy who was deadly serious about his pitches but knew how to keep having fun in the moment.

Does this happen often with Soto enjoying a good pitcher batter duel? I would never have expected such gamesmanship and mutual respect from either a pitches or Soto. Clips I’ve seen, Soto is proven to be great enough a batter that he can shuffle about and glare at the pitcher.
