  • In this video we discuss all the hand strikes we use in American Tang Soo do for sparring. Not to be confused with power striking or self defense striking. These hand techniques are primarily used for point fighting and in studio sparring.

Sweet! I’ve been looking for examples of full contact sport combinations from a Tang Soo Do perspective ever since I found out about Karate Combat. Thanks for sharing your experience!

Great techniques. Thanks for sharing the ridge hand in particular. I tell my students that it’s basically the karate version of a hook punch. You do a lot for the American variant of Tang Soo Do, which I also teach. It’s good to see as I feel it’s heavily under represented. With Mr Norris using Chun Kuk Do and now Chuck Norris System the translation gets lost. And most people don’t realize it is really American Tang Soo Do as well.
    Take care.

I can concur that the ridge hand works great. I do security in a hospital and a psych patient got out of their room and tried to attack me. I hit them in the jaw with a strong ridge hand.. It stopped him right in his tracks !!!

Here's my thoughts on that. They're super dangerous in the wrong hands, its like a loaded gun. It's just a blind swing and if you actually do make contact that person is getting messssssssed up. Self defense, I'm all for it, in studio sparring... not so much.

It looks like we do the same kind of point sparring as you, so any more sparring tips would be directly relevant and greatly appreciated! I've probably scored half of my total sparring points with the back-knuckle, so I can vouch for it's effectiveness despite not having a lot of power. It's real life applicable as well, since, if you know where to strike, it doesn't need much power to send someone to the ground. But that's another story.

There is no style more effective than others. Like @mckenziesylvain said , one style has this better, one has that better. Each of them have their strengths and each of them their weaknesses.

It's hard to say because not all Kwans are ran the same way. You would think they were similar, coming from the same source (Moo Duk Kwan) and the same parent (Hwang Kee) but the offspring would not agree. Both think the other is the love child and not as legitimate. I studied under someone that emphasized conditioning and form. (Tang Soo) Others emphasize sport. Some go with whatever will sell, offering Bruce Lee's Ninja Turtle Self Defense.
Sensei Ichi did a very good one on why Chuck Norris decided to leave the TSD group and I had a similar experience with my Kwan 30 years ago, for different reasons. I have been in other studios that teach TSD and TKD and they are as different as can be if you have experience in those arts. Again, there is a common core due to Moo Duk Kwan but that is the basic strikes and kicks. The heart of a Kwan is the instructor and what he thinks is most important.
