- Getting a shot at the doctor's office may become less painful in the not-too-distant future.
MIT researchers have engineered a device that delivers a tiny, high-pressure jet of medicine through the skin without the use of a hypodermic needle. The device can be programmed to deliver a range of doses to various depths - an improvement over similar jet-injection systems that are now commercially available.

So they reinvented something that has been around since the 1950's, such brilliance
3 years later and im still getting stabbed with freaking needles.
6 years later and still with the needles.
I will only leave a comment in order to get a notification when people stop getting stabbed by needles
7 years later and they are still using needles, and a great many practioners are incompetent at that. A recent episode they wiggled the needle around to stab the vein under my skin and blood went all over my arm, the chair arm, and even on the floor. Please please please make this injection system commercially available!!! Stop with the barbaric needles already!!!!!
Needleless injection devices have been around for a long time. Google "Jet injector" or "air gun injector" They might not be as fancy as this one, but I know they have them. I bet we could make one ourselves with a needleless syringe and powerful electromagnet plunger.
its fine pussy
High pressure jet injections have been around for a long time and have always failed because the dispersion once it leaves the nozzle damages more tissue and causes more pain. Until they find a way to constrain the jet after it leaves the device, it will simply be a concept periodically revisited and of course fail for the same reason. I suspect it would take something like using ultrasonics to keep the jet constrained, mind you this would likely make the appliance a wide palm like device rather than a narrow cylinder.
They will never use this, it will destroy veins and can't be localized enough.
@@ryanpongracz8051 Well, that's what I said, they keep trying high pressure injectors but it keeps damaging too much tissue though it's meant to be subcutaneous and muscular injections so nothing to with veins and they would target the deltoid muscle to avoid any veins. Mind you, I added that ultrasonic levitation technology might be able to contain the stream but would require a large preferably planar source for the ultrasound transducers and this would make the concept more of a wide pad than a narrow cylinder. I guess the fact that everything you mentioned was already in my post just shows you don't read.
@@johnwang9914 Not really my battle but i laughed because he really didn't seem like he read it.
@@johnwang9914From what I have read, microscopic amounts of biomatter such as blood from a patient could end up in the nozzle and be injected into another patient causing infections.
Which is why I've never seen jet injectors and syringe guns used beside the mass inoculation of livestock.
If you were paying attention to the video clip then you would have heard that the benefits are that with a computer interface you can control the amount of drugs that will be administered and the velocity, as well as inject and aspirate the drug if need be. Plus it would be considerably less painful than the old school injectors. All of which earlier Jet Injectors never did.
Another Star Trek prediction comes to life...
ComeAndPlayWithGames I hope I live to see April 5th 2063.
+GastonAsston Jet injectors have existed since 1960.
TheShadow960
Well, I still want to see April 5th 2063. Just like I saw Oct. 21st, 2015
GastonAsston
Ok.
Hyposprays are based off of Jet injectors not the other way around
And here 9 years later, in this pandemic time, why haven't we seen this get into action yet??
these injectors have been around for a long time now, they were decommissioned due to the possibility of splashback, however with a disposable tip this could be avoided, I suggest you read the jet injector Wikipedia page.
*IN 2017!!*
...still waiting on that completely pain-free injection and blood draw device. :-[
9 years later and we still use needles
wow! exciting on so many levels. Great breakthrough concepts realized for various life saving applications while reducing levels of discomfort for those already experiencing more than they can stand. Amazing and much to look forward to. Thank you!
How could anyone dislike this? Incredible. Dry products... much longer shelf life! No contamination, also - a technological advance. impressive!
My mother's friend in the military told me about this years ago. Apparently if not done correctly it can seriously gash your skin. Although it is still a revolutionary system.
Well thought through, HealingBlight!! I really hope that they can have a version in the field soon - the potential benefits are amazing.
Just for the record, I agree - hypospray ftw.
I got shot with something like this in the Army in 1966.!!! HURT LIKE HELL !!!!!!!!! almost passed out.
All they would need is a small disposable film to put on the front of the device. Nothing is really being reused. It just doesn't need to be thrown away...
But can it compete cost-effectively with typical needles?
That depends on how much it costs and how long it takes to break. how often are repairs needed. Needles are a constant, monthly purchase, if not weekly. These devices will replace X number of needles so find the X to set the costs. Plus, if it's relatively painless, I know I'd prefer it to needles.
I liked seeing Wilford Brimley explain this to me.
This was used already in the 1970s,called the jet gun vaccination. It was used in 1972 Variola vera epidemic in Yugoslavia.
If you're talking about a Tricorder. Several Silicon Valley start-ups and Universities are currently working on making them. Such as Scanadu, and Senstor as well as a Dr Peter Jansen created his own.
This is going to be great for pediatricians.
This has already been around a while. When I enlisted in the military in 2008 I was administered my vaccines while in boot camp with a jet injector. They might have improved upon the original design, but I don't see anything groundbreaking if you ask me.
Lets just call it what it is. It's a Hypospray! Great now that we got that out of the way where the hell is my Warp Drive??? Damn slackers
I'm a medical assistant that uses a lot of needles in administering medications using various angles. How will this work for each angle and site e.g subcutaneous, intramuscular, and subdermal?
Ian Hunter is the smartest human I've ever shared a room with
Not in the least. I believe I make complete sense. And that new 90% shorter needle I saw advertised on TV is one humongous step in the right direction.
I can imagine the cost of even a single unit. Ouch.
it seems like incredibly simple tech, essentially just a linear actuator. Like an audio speaker, but with more sophisticated control.
That scares the shit out of me dude but i guess these will be at least hard to get
it looks like an early model of the thing dr crusher uses to administer medication on the enterprise
like sneak up behind someone on the street, dose them up with some anthrax. now im scared.
Auh the Hypospray was developed and used in the early 50's.
I'd trust that guy's science without hesitation, based solely on the size of his stache.
When will this become standard?
Since the divice can inject substances into a specific depth, it might actually adopted to inject a dissolvent to get rid of a tatoo.
Today I saw a video of a student who has written the cure for cancer, now I see a video about the end of needles..the world is going fast!
0:57 _>"it can both inject into _*_AND ASPIRATE FROM_*_ tissue"_
for those playing at home, this likely means that (at least once) they accidentally shot it COMPLETELY THROUGH a person and it sprayed out the other side!
i wonder if that video exists.
_edit: ok it was likely just into & outof a flesh simulation._
Best of luck guys!!!
I'm pretty sure they are going to turn this into some kind of weapon in the future...
Dont mosquitos release an anesthetic, so you cant feel mosquito bites?
do all liquid drugs have the same viscosity? if not you would have to adjust the pressure depending on the drug and that could add a human error to it.
Ian Hunter looks a lot different to when he fronted Mott The Hoople.
I got shots with an air gun, had to be 40 years ago, in the US military. Seems very similar to this.
perfect...now im not scared to take steroids when using this thing
Why isn't this being used everywhere ?
oh well, since its out there lets make it very obvious.
1. modern society supports fascination for abusive behaviors
2. this is both a physical and psychological tazer
3. these professors are accountable for bringing some knowledge to some masses
4. this instrument needs to be regulated NOW
This is nine year old video. Event today in covid times we are using needles for vaccination.
Well, Roddenberry predicted personal communicators (cellphones), earpieces (bluetooth headsets), tablet computers (iPads, Kindles, and the ilk), and talking computers (Siri). This is but the first step to making a legitimate hypospray able to be used by hospitals. Next, a pill to regenerate organs and then, perhaps, warp drive.
Update now for 2021? Nobody from the labs asks you if you want to get a shot without the needle. Well, you are late to announce your product to the hospitals and labs.
All the best discoveries are made by accident.
If you put a shiny metal case on the device it would be just like star trek
This has been going since the 60s and still hasn’t been made
Right I'm thinking the same damn thing
yeah i wonder what the hold-up is.
Traditional jet injectors used gas cartridges, and were electric or manually powered, this is magnetically powered, and can fire powders as well as liquids. I believe the first jet injections happened with a grease gun, on accident.
You´ve changed another part of Star Trek from science fiction to reality.
Next Revolutionary device, giving people a mustache like his X)
has this device been tested on patients? any possibilities of cross contamination if the same device is used on different patients?
Wait this has been around fir many years why are they calling it new?
The only thing im concerned about is... Does it hurt?
Brilliant! How much do you think the device would cost? Also, the cost of the replacement needles/syringes would have to be comparable to the ones used now for any hospital to equip these.
...didn't I see this in Lost?? beginning of season 2 -that Desmond guy? ..the heck?
Why not just use a hydraulic ram to amplify the force on the plunger and use a very short needle to only puncture the epidermis the dead layer to lower the required pressure? The patient wouldn't feel pain from that short of a needle. A hand plunger would push a ram amplifying the force 25 times. A second ram would push a plunger in a glass vial with a 36 gauge 1.0mm long luer lock needle. The vial and needle go in the trash and the ram only contacts the plunger in the vial. You would limit the needle pain by only cutting the dead epidermis and limit pain from the jet by reducing the required pressure
Weren't jet injectors a thing long before this? What's different here?
How many days/months/years until this is used in assassination attempts?
Can't wait for research to come out on if this "hypospray" could increase the efficacy of DNA vaccines, or decrease vaccine associated sarcomas in cats, or increase vaccine efficacy while lowering cost of vaccinating in third world countries. This could make the lives of veterinarians, nurses, diabetics, ect so much easier/better.
LOL the 1960s called and said they tried to do it then and it failed to take off.
who are you questioning ? do you need more information on law enforcement and regulations ?
why jet injectors never took off because the injector gets contaminated if it could be made touch free, or have replaceable injector heads then maybe it would take off, but needles are cheap and easy to make.
Drug inject's not easy for me for long time. Thank you very much.
Part of me is sad in that, with tablets and needless injectors, the future is turning out to be more like Star Trek and less like Star Wars. Where are the Bacta tanks and light sabers?
I want to work with this dude...cool stuff
Awesome technology. Keep up the good work
9 years later and we still use needles….
No, I think you wouldn't feel it all, but the poison is what makes it itch afterwards.
I hope this invention will be used As Soon As Possible. Seriously I hate injection-needle
No one shall ever have to heat a spoon for their heroin ever again!
this year we got black hole photos, a visor to give vision to blind, rad-x pills, a cure for cancer, THE FREAKING SONIC SCREWDRIVER :D, and this. At this rate we might have the hover board by 2015.
How is this device sterilized to prevent cross contamination. We are treating a HIV patient with PRP this weekend, how safe is this?
Why doesn’t this have a billion views
But my system wouldn't produce any nobel prizes and require a room full of engineers. If I knew the pressure required I could build it myself.
عقل الانسان ليس له حدود. مطور منتجات د-أسامة احمد باهديلة
Indeed.
Wouldn’t this force air into the blood stream
Isn't it a bit dangerous too? I mean, what if some air bobbles are in the "needle", and it will get injected with the drug?
I just thought of it like a Steampunk needle.
..isn't this how they administered smallpox and tb vaccines?
So yeah they have. My Grandma told me about the flu outbreak in the 1970's.
Where is this in use today?
Интересно, что будет если неправильно настроят скорость впрыска. Например, для детской руки выберут скорость для старой жесткой задницы.
How does the vibrated powder behave differently from a liquid drug?
Already invented by a Hungarian company (2003) (it's very similar)
Amazing!
I thought it was the moustache talking.
imagine this technology in the tattoo industry
Communicators? Check. Tablet PC's? Check. Hyposprays? Check. Holodecks?
You are absolutely right :)
I am Professor Ian Hunter and this is my mustache
Cool video. Can't believe I've never heard about this technology before hope this replaces the good ol' needle. As long as drug addicts don't get hold of it lol
Bill Gates is going to love this.
+Powerful Primates
This is much better than a needle, and useful in rural areas in 3rd world countries where you need really good hygiene when injecting drugs and vaccines. This would help because you can probably clean the device by just actuating with cleaning solution and cleaning the tip.
And Bill Gates funds development in Africa especially.
I've been meaning to get addicted to heroin. Scary needles have been holding me back :)
Hmm, seems a lot like a technology that a professor at my university tried to develop, Prof. Mark Kendall. He deemed it inappropriate, but the technology used here is slightly different. He's currently working on a different delivery system, check it out. aibn (.) uq (.) edu (.) au/no-needles-no-fear
you don't feel the mosquito's sting cause it's narrow? WHAT???
Is it not commercially available/able to be mass produced yet?
because a more expensive better looking more futuristic wheel is always better
