      To be fair, Billi doesn't have all of these different buttons, and doesn't get to go on great adventures the way Bunny does. Though canines, in general, are very emotional, as they are dependent on their pack, and need to care about how well they fit in, while felines are more independent, and thus more practical when it comes to interacting with others.

Also do you realize how difficult it would be to have a dog learn a script for EVERY one of these videos?Thats much less believable than the idea that dogs can be taught simple words and their meanings with these buttons. Plus, if they really were using smell coded buttons, don't you think the dog would be..you know... smelling them? I'd say the pauses they take are just more evidence they really do understand these words and are carefully choosing what they want to communicate.

      @ben-vh6qn dogs have a human vocabulary of about 150 to 300 words. At least the breeds typically shown engaging in these behaviors. Is it possible that they are perfectly edited and she is just recording waiting for something to happen that makes sense almost like a fortune teller or any other illusionist? Maybe. But also dogs are highly intelligent and capable of much more impressive intellectual feats than being able to express basic concepts of pain and pleasure that we know they experience from scientific research. The best you can do is say people interpret this as a higher form of speech than it really is. Even then you can tell when you have a highly intelligent dog that wants to speak with you and be a part of human life very badly. You will believe whatever you want to believe.

    I love that Alexis leaves the parts where Bunny is thinking in and just speeds them up. Watching her process new words is incredibly cool to watch.
    Something I've been thinking about for awhile is will Bunny get to the point where she can convey something from another dog to a human, if that's even a possibility. If she were able to do that in any manner, it could seriously change the way we understand communication in general.
    That said, my question puts a whole bunch of carts before the horse. But the implications surrounding communication, language and inference (ex via scent) is all kinds of mind blowing.

    • @jaschabull2365
      @jaschabull2365 Před 3 lety +33

      Yeah, that's pretty interesting. I seem to recall it being said that Koko couldn't really interpret for other gorillas because, not knowing how to sign, they were unintelligible to her. And I also heard it even said that there was a signing orangutan who saw himself as a person and other orangutans as animals because they couldn't sign, and thus presumably were effectively mute to him.
      Bunny, on the other hand, seems to have lots of experience with other dogs, and considering dogs are a domestic species, it seems that in general they probably are capable of understanding both humans and each other, so it very well might not be outside the realm of possibility that Bunny might be able to interpret for another dog. Of course that very well might depend on whether the vocabulary of words given to her have the capacity to articulate the types of intra-species communications dogs make. It's definitely a fascinating thought.

      I think an experiment like that is definitely doable but might be hard to put into action. If say you have another dog over for a visit, wait until that dog needs to go outside (but set it up in a way that Bunny doesn't need to go out, walk with Bunny first before the other dog comes over that haven't been walked yet) and ignore/feign ignorance about that the dog needs to go outside. Presumably Bunny would notice that the other dog wants to go outside, so the question is would Bunny go and use her buttons to ask to go outside on the other dog's behalf?

More and more people start to use these buttons, and it keeps amazing me. I grew up with dogs, and I always knew, or had the feeling, that dogs understand us much better than we humans used to think. I can remember that I had a heated debate about that as a kid at my very religious school :-) I think that it is absolutely fantastic that we can communicate with dogs, and maybe even with other animals, with the help from those buttons. To me it proves that we humans are most certainly not the only creatures with feelings, emotions, and so on. But anyone who had the pleasure to have a dog friend already knows that.

    Have you ever tried getting bunny to respond to images/cards that would be used to help children recognise and understand emotions?
    Like can bunny recognise a happy human or a sad human based just on their facial expression in images? and/or can she recognise and communicate what emotions a human in the room is feeling?
    It would be amazing to think that maybe a support animal can recognise the emotions of a non-verbal child and help communicate them on the kids behalf. I know it raises a topic of whether it might stunt the child's development as they'd no longer have much need to attempt to communicate themselves. But it's still an interesting what-if.

      Actually with dogs, they recognize human facial expressions even better than dog facial expressions! There's a whole documentary about it. She’s confirming many things for me. Especially the suspicion I’ve always had w/my girls (dogs) that while they may notice we don’t look the same, I’m definitely their “mom”, their relation, their family all the same. Almost as if I must just be a different version of them, or the concept they have of their self, rather than a different species altogether. I always try not to project my human emotion or concepts to their behaviors, but like Bunny demonstrates daily, sometimes they show you exactly what they’re thinking, feeling. Sometimes the message is simply too concise, too clear in meaning to chock up to coincidence or the human personification of an animal. It’s the additional expression thru human language that’s always been missing. Now that Bunny has this tool, she’s proving to the world that dogs can understand “human” concepts & ponder, even display an understanding of objective realities such as friendship, love, family, etc. She’s showing scientists the world over that dog owners who’ve claimed their pets exhibit these understandings or what we egotistically claim to be uniquely “human” emotions or cognitive reasoning of objective truths aren’t crazy.

      I love this whole talking pets phenomenon, it used to be limited to gorillas in zoos and some parrots and exotic birds.. but those aren't very common, so it's really easy to blow off any findings or place it in a separate mental category as "exceptional" animals. Dogs are so commonplace and familiar and un-exotic, that the "talking dog movement" provides a relatable and viscerally convincing group of evidence that animals have an inner world, and reason and awareness and feelings and social relationships, even a sense of humor. They have dreams. They can use WORDS lmao, the human criteria for being anything other than a robot or a plant
