Ryan Reynolds' Sense Of Humor Didn't Translate In Germany - "Late Night With Conan O'Brien"

- čas přidán 26. 05. 2021
- (Original airdate: 02/13/08) Ryan Reynolds talks about being named one of People’s Sexiest Men Alive, getting in trouble with Tom Arnold, and meeting his then-10-year-old co-star, Abigail Breslin.
- Komedie
As a foreigner in Germany, I've concluded that the problem with German humour is that exaggerations don't make things funnier for Germans, they make it serious.
Interesting take. I’ve never looked at it that way :)
Same thing with sarcasm, most people don't get it if you don't make it extremely obvious to them. I'm German and I'm always extremely thankful when I meet someone that gets jokes without obvious hints.
There are 5 types of humour - Exaggeration, Pun, Put-downs, Silliness and Surprise. So that means Germans don't like one facet of humour.
@@UnsaltedCashew38 yes. german. everyone of them. always. thats for sure. sooo... in america you are loosing your extreme overweight right now? Just asking because all americans are fat because of eating so much fast food, right?
Can confirm. Though german humour is great it is quite dry, straight to the point, finger in the wound kind of humour
American tells a joke, German does not laugh - Germans have no humor.
German tells a joke, American does not laugh - Germans have no humor.
I genuinely don't understand why this story is being perceived as so offensive. I thought he was being self-deprecating and talking about an embarrassing moment for himself. Not a depiction of American culture, or German culture, just a funny story about things getting lost in translation.
LMAO hahaha
@@Priya-zc1mi Who said I was offended ;D
German sense of humor is to humor what German cinema is to cinema. There are some outstanding outliers but not many. But Germany is awesome w/their engineering prowess, words to describe abstract philosophical concepts, Octoberfest and most importantly an Autobahn where the left lane for passing only is respected unlike the US.
@@willyjohnsons_member6019 sorry I assumed your comment was coming from a place of frustration
Ryan Reynold:

Why do you think, Ryans sense of humors doesn't translate in Germany? I'm German and I really liked The Green Lantern.
XD Der war gut
There was no Ryan Reynolds in green lantern
That's the movie he gets made fun of for the most. He makes fun of that movie all the time himself.
that's funny

I'll never get tired of good impressions of us Germans. It's just weird to me that Ryan would openly admit that he was gonna kidnap a little girl.
😆
Insane hollyvood actor Ryan Reynolds in love with little girls
the content makes me think sarcasm but we all know there's no word for sarcasm in German.
Funny it sounds
@@jedinxf7 There is a word in German and its called Sarkasmus. Or is it just you being sarcastic and I didn‘t get it.
2008 - Ryan Reynolds looks like he's on his way to junior prom. Conan looks completely the same.
so true
Conan looks like my Principal who flirts with every female faculty
German voice: But they are grown men they can't go to prom!
Given the kidnapping pun, I accendentely read junior po*n..... That's so wroooong, stil I'm lfmao
Conan from 1990s also look the same... He is a vampire.
Funny: as a German, I had it happen to me exactly the other way around. In the US, I got in trouble a couple of times for irony and sarcasm.
It's almost like drawing conclusions about a group of millions of people based on one social interaction is kind of silly
Obviously, it's even hard for people that speak the same language, to recognise sarcasm. Why should it better if you switch land or language?😊😉
Timing bro, you don't have it. Miguel Navarro
@@burns83 Ah, thanks.
I am German and our irony and sarcasm are drier and darker as the USAmerican. They dont get it, you have to say: sarkasm.
god that punchline to that bit "you really plan to kidnap a child?"
God Conan is so, truly, genuinely funny
He makes me cringe alot every time I see him in something but it was indeed a good one 😌👌
What makes this great interview even better is that Conan keeps bringing back the idea of the German press taking everything literally. So your mind is processing 2 levels of humor.
That’s what makes Conan the best late night talk show host!
@@michelleamatulle6378 No. It's his hustler outfit when he went ridin' with Kevin Hart and Ice Cube that makes him the best late night talk show host.
Yeah, I mean no offense to anyone who like Falon but he sucks. Then you watch Conan and see what someone with real talent does.
@@YTOnceAgain "Don't be selling no ass over there, Conan!"

We all know who said that.
Funny all my classmates cracked jokes when they came back from an exchange year in the US about how Americans would look stone faced when one made a slightly sarcastic comment.

Honestly, buying a (famous) recovering alcoholic expensive alcohol is a very Deadpool thing to do!

I was wondering. He almost had a speak impediment.
thx me too...
Wot do you say? His hair was dying? Oh mein Gott! Das ist horrible! I will note that down! ;-)
Oh. That's why he looked... Strange 😂
That Tom Arnold story is gold! Its exactly the kind of forehead slapping mistake I've made so many times. When I do those kind of things I beat myself up for years but when other people do them I just think he's human and tried to make up for it no big deal.
It's cool that he has the confidence to make it into a fun story he can just tell publicly and moves on from it.
Because YOU did it, most people are overly critical of themselves, also you see every mistake that you make, but you only see their mistakes that they want you to see, the way they want you to see it
Erm right

This interview aired so long ago yet I still remember that Tom Arnold story because it’s so hilarious.
The first time I saw him was in "Two Guys, A Girl, and a Pizza Place" (In the late 90s) which later shortened the name to "Two Guys and a Girl". I knew right away he'd be huge. His screen presence and personality just shined.
Van wilder is my favorite. The Netflix movie was garbage
Same here. Loved the show. I was hoping one random "Two Guys and a Girl" joke in the Deadpool films.
Waiting, must see.
I knew him from that show too! Always loved Ryan and Berg!
Fun fact:
Danny DeVito and The Rock were once considered to voice Pikachu in Pokémon Detective Pikachu (2019) before Ryan Reynolds was cast.
I can't imagine Danny DeVito's voice on pikachu

@@rmarques8156 are you kidding me? Any freaking job, Danny devito can do it. from electrician to plumber to the President, and also, voice actor. As a Matter of fact, he has done a ton of voiceovers.
I'm from germany, and yes, irony and sarcasm is really, really hard to translate (thats why i watch a lot of those movies in english). Deadpool for example was really hard i can imagine. They even changed some lines COMPLETELY because it wouldnt have made sense to just translate them. Its not an issue just with germany, it goes through every translation, where it has to be lipsync or its some reference to something else (which people might not know in another country, like some celebrities). But at least with Deadpool they really tried, Free Guy too, though it was not THAT impressive translated. On the plus side, germany is really good at dubbing movies, compared to the US. I watched some european netflix shows in german dubbing and english dubbing. The english version ALWAYS sounds like a german b-movie from the 80s. Or some crappy Videogame-Voiceover from the early 2000s, while in german you often can't even tell it's dubbed. But for german's not beeing funny: Yeah, we don't even have a SINGLE late night show here, that's how funny germans are in general.
there is late night berlin but this is often not so funny...
heute show, zdf magazin royale?
Great interview, and definitely maybe is one of the best romantic Dramedys there is, a lot of heart
I can't believe someone unearthed an interview of Ryan Reynolds being interviewed when he was 12.
Idk, I understand his jokes. I am German and I literally enjoy his sense of humor a lot. I guess the interviewers were not knowing what kind of humor he uses and were not ready for that. Also guys honestly everyone of us has a different sense of humor. Sad he got such a weird response to his Judi Dench joke. I thought it's hilarious and describes his aw towards his co actress pretty well.
Yeah, I've been to Germany and everybody understood when I was being sarcastic, so I agree, it must have just been those specific people.
Well, there's not much time to develop sarcastic humour during the 13 semesters of their Germanistikstudium, and when their parents kicked them out, they had to focus on getting a job.
Love Conan. His show is amazing
Man I remember having this episode on vcr, must’ve seen it a thousand times by now, this was for me the moment I realised Ryan Reynolds is hilarious!
Two of the most witty people ever seen, love them.

As a straight man, I would say Ryan Reynolds is a lot more attractive as an older fellow than he is as a pretty boy like he is in this clip.
Lol
@@Emma-nw2xg what bro?
I mean, as a non straight man, I too concur. Ryan looks nicer now.
As a confusing trans lesbian married to a man, I, too, believe this!
Not sure the labels matter but your opinion is valid with or without them--you don't have to be any particular label to have your opinion.
2:51 I thought he was speaking a different language. I had to replay it 3 times to know that it was English. Accents are fun to hear
Oh the to and fro banter..amazing

It sounds like Tom Arnold spends a lot of time in Ryan's building lobby.
Ryan reynolds is a guy that everyperson needs in their life.

Conan and Ryan make a great comedic duo.
The way that Conan played off the joke.. comedy gold
Spent a number of years in Germany, I called one guy a Lady Killer. Should have seen the look on his face, he's like, I Don't Kill Ladies. My wife explained it to him that he is successful with with the opposite sex. Funny stuff
Did you translate it to german as you said it? Because that would be very weird. I mean, you wouldn't understand "women hero" (Frauenheld) either, because it just sounds ridiculous in English but it perfectly fine in german. So it had nothing to do with not being funny or humorous. It just doesn't make any sense
@@starlighttigerx268 your putting to much thought into this. I said it in English, it's a common saying in the states but the poor German lad had never heard such a phrase and took it as literal. Hence the joke "I don't kill ladies"
I'm from Germany. Lady Killer, I get it. A guy like O. J. Simpson.
@@s.schattenprophet Excellent !
You can't expect a German knowing YOUR mother tongue perfectly if you are the one being in GERMANY. "It's a common saying in the states", so the whole world has to be familiar with it? This isn't confirming anything, it just got lost in translation. I'm with @StarLightTiger X on this.
Conan is so good at improvising when interviewing people!
Iove this video cuz it talks about how Conan loves to travel (and that eventually becomes his thing) and Ryan being able to do more humor (which eventually becomes his thing)
2:08
“We need you to be the good guy”
“I’m not going to be the good guy, I’m going to be the great guy”
Immediately after this he ran into Abigail Breslin leaving a taping of Jay Leno
This would be better as a podcast!!!
I wonder if he looks back on this interview, and says, "Deadpool must be really popular in Germany."
Its the same thing with TV shows, particularly comedies. I remember watching Family Guy when I lived in Germany and they actually change the jokes for them to make more sense in whatever country their in, especially if its a joke that plays on words that rhyme or sound alike because in that countries language the words may not rhyme if translated directly and wouldn't make any sense.
this is gold!
Conan never disappoints.
I remember back then, even with the hype Ryan was kind of slept on as a legitamite actor, but I was a huge fan since I saw waiting and watched 2 guy and a girl. Glad he's so popular now
Conan’s comedic timing is unmatched
These impressions of germans made me laugh so much as a german guy. In general this stereotype is pretty funny
conan and Ryan are hilarious together.
I might not be the first one who think that Ryan and Conan sense of humour and jokes are kinda simmiliar in a way that its unexpected and flow naturally, would love to see more of these two in an interview
Language barriers go hand-in-hand with culture differences, when you learn a new language you also need to learn the culture that uses it. Speaking as an American learning Japanese, most things will translate, but if you don't learn the culture too, it won't translate well and everyone will have a bad time.

I remember Robin Williams describing being interviewed in Germany,
German reporter: "Why do you think there are not many German comedians?"
Williams: "Did you ever think that maybe you killed all the funny people?"
German: "No."
Absolutely rude to say something like that. In no universe this would be funny 😒
Hehe good one
Frankly, if Robin Williams actually told this story like this, he must have made it up. A German reporter would never ask that question because the premise is false. There are plenty of comedians in Germany.

The thing about any kind of humor, but especially sarcasm and irony, is that you need to know about the cultural background in which the joke is made. That's why comedy/humor in a foreign language/country is about the biggest challenge in learning that language there is.

Funny how Americans make fun of German accents, since they are the number one monolingual nation in the world, in Germany almost everyone of the next gen speaks at least two languages
That'll happen when you live in Europe, surrounded by other languages, vs. growing up in America with several thousand miles between most of us and the nearest country that speaks a language other than English.

And i am sorry but: Green Lantern was just awful
It#s so weird, but Ryan's humor is rather German. He uses his body (gestic), his face (mimic), voice voice and his playing with words perfectly like a lot of German comedians. The translation from English to German works.
@@Stefan-ne7rx yes, he has a very german humor, but the problem is tht it often relies on american "insider jokes"... Just like americans wouldn`t understand our political jokes like "The profession of my father is irrelevant." It`s just too dependant on knowing context.
