    Consider Subscribing and Fly Along! Took over 25 minuets to get my clearance at Orange County (MGJ) Frequency and phone number was down. This is my 1st Hard IFR flight to Columbia County (1B1) with no autopilot. Lots going on at once. Be ahead of your plane. I had a great learning experience on this flight. Thanks for Flying Along!

    Quick thought. You can try to call before engine start on the phone for a "hold for release" clearance, ready in say ~20 mins.. At least in that scenario you'd know if anyone will answer before you start burning fuel! (of course that doesn't change the problem of being at the end of the runway and still needing someone to answer AGAIN.)

    Calling the FSS number listed in Foreflight might get some movement on the clearance delivery. I imagine the FSS can contact approach control to alert them to the issue. Just discovered your channel and working on IFR currency. Thanks for sharing the good and the bad. It's how things go sometimes.

    If you can takeoff and remain VFR you can request your clearance in route. It’s called picking up an IFR in route. You could probably reach ARTCC or the nearest approach on the radio if you are high enough. I have taken off from airports that have no way of reaching approach or have a clearance delivery, but I remained VFR until I was able to pick up my IFR clearance.

    • @PilotFun101
      @PilotFun101  Před rokem +1

      Very true. But it was pretty low ceilings all around so I couldn’t stay VFR unfortunately.

    • @crufflerdoug

      Also, you need to have a plan if they ignore you for a LONG time (which they’re allowed to do).

    • @aviatortrucker6285
      @aviatortrucker6285 Před 6 dny

      @@crufflerdoug they usually don’t ignore you if you have a flight plan on file. They tend to ignore people that want to just do flight following.

    • @crufflerdoug
      @crufflerdoug Před 6 dny

      @@aviatortrucker6285usually it’s no problem, but I’ve had to wait over 10 minutes before. Definitely not something to do if you’re taking off into WX that’s barely VMC.

    • @aviatortrucker6285
      @aviatortrucker6285 Před 5 dny +1

      @@crufflerdoug I understand that. I’m not saying you takeoff VMC into IMC right away. This is in case you’re flying and you can takeoff VMC and remain VMC for at least 20 minutes before having to hit any kind of real bad weather. Usually I do this is the clouds are at my cruise altitude, and I can fly the next cruising altitude below the clouds. I filed IFR on every cross country whether it’s VMC or IMC.

  • @crufflerdoug
    @crufflerdoug Před 6 dny +1

    A flight in these conditions single pilot without a working autopilot = below my personal minimums. Before departure, I’d also brief & plan how to get back to the departure airport if something went weird. Not criticisms, obviously, just data points.

      @PilotFun101 I don't mind flying through the layers to get on top but when imc for too long its gets a bit much. maybe I'll get over the anxiety of it once I build more hrs. I had zero imc time while training(just the foggles). 😄

    I don’t have my IR, so don’t know if this would work, but could you have called the FSS number and maybe they could have found you an alternative phone number for clearance? I know they don’t relay clearances anymore.

    Is a GPS the same as an RNAV approach? I noticed he cleared you for the "GPS RWY 03 approach" and you read back "RNAV 03 approach." He _butchered_ your N number with "N466688N" a couple of times! I guess if you know you're being spoken to there's no need to correct a busy approach controller on something minor, correct? I'm getting back in the cockpit after 20 years. Watching your _excellent_ videos for a bit of learning before I start re-training for a biennial flight review and instrument competency check in the distant future! Well, hopefully not _too_ distant!
