    Super mature and wise beyond your years man. Being able to tell ATC "unable" is one of the hardest things for young pilots to do. You're killing it already

    Hey man, great video! Nice editing and nice panel, btw! Just, wanted to share something with you; Don't under estimate the value of the "heads up" taxi. Loading GPS data, playing with CDIs, etc, are all good ways to get your first prop strike. God forbid of course, but people have hit other people, pets, cars, aircraft, hangars, cones, poles, etc, because they were taxing while doing everything but looking out the window. It's never a good habit, I promise. Not reprimanding you - I've been in this biz for two decades and have totally made my fair share of mistakes. Just looking out for you!

    It doesn't matter how good a pilot you think you are. Even if you have a photographic memory, you should always back everything up with the checklist. It only takes 1 time to skip or miss something, especially as fast as you breeze through your flows. It only takes 1 time and you definitely don't want it to cost a life, including your own.

      He conceded he had an "out" if things "got bad" which means he entertained the idea that they could. Given there was a chance he might have to execute his escape route the decision to go was problematic. I get it, though: he's 17, on fire with the passion of flight, and this is what 17-year olds do. The thing that really scares me are the people who expressed they are learning to fly or want to and thought this was a masterclass in flying.

    Hey man I am a pretty well versed ASEL/IFR pilot and a student of commercial aviation up at University of North Dakota. I have experience with thunderstorms, both in Florida and many places elsewhere. Flying underneath thunderstorms is a very ill advised idea, the FAA recommends at least 20NM from cells the size you were right next to. Hail, Microbursts, Wind-shear, and lightning are just a few deadlier hazards that can get you in that scenario, it’s just a matter of when. If I were you, don’t file IFR or fly even VFR anywhere near a thunderstorm like that; being below it doesn’t mean anything. It’s not worth your airframe and it’s not worth your life. Just remember airliners don’t even go that close to extreme precipitation and thunderstorms which means you definitely shouldn’t be.
    Tailwinds

    • @henrymullin1836
      @henrymullin1836  Před 8 měsíci +3

      I appreciate the comment and your advice. I’m aware the FAA recommends 20mm from a cell and 99% of the time I follow that recommendation. This time was a little different due to active military airspace but I felt confident becuse multiple other aircraft went through the same route. Regardless of that after looking back on the video multiple times if I had to do it again I probably wouldn’t have, but I did and I’m taking it as a learning experience.

    Nice flight. Thanks for taking me along. Your procedures are good across the board. The video doesn't address this, and I didn't hear you say anything, but does selecting VFR approach on the Garmin provide you with any vertical guidance? Always good to have some backup vertical guidance like a glide slope or LVN GPS approach if there's something available on your landing runway. You most certainly had a PAPI or VASI on your VFR approach, and I'm not critical of you. It was a good flight. Perhaps RNWY 26 doesn't have any IFR approaches. Those kinds of runways still exist. But if there is an approach to back yourself up with, it's not a bad practice.
    Keep safe.

      @@henrymullin1836 Thanks for responding. I'm really glad to know that! The only Garmin experience that I have is on the Garmin 3000. Garmin must keep reinventing itself! LOL!
