- HEEEEELLLLLOOOOO #TheatreThursdayFam đđđ! Welcome to a very, very extra special Theatre Thursday (with your host, Katherine Steele....that's me. Hi!)
Today, we're sitting down with the very talented Ryan Rosenheim. In fact, this is part 1 of an incredible interview we did a while back...it's taken so long to edit because it ended up being around 2 hours long! Which is crazy, so today's video is a little bit longer than usual (but a lot of you guys like the longer vids, so yay!)
Anyway, in today's vid, we're going to talk all about Ryan's school: University of Michigan (see, I told you he was talented!).
We're going to talk about his experience as an actor at University of Michigan, his audition process for the school, tips for aspiring actors, and what he's up to now.
He even shares audition advice for anyone dreaming of U Mich!
So, I'm filing this under my 'School Spotlight' series. SCHOOL SPOTLIGHT is series of videos that I do where I interview arts students from the best Acting, Musical Theatre, Theatre, and Theatre Tech universities in the country!
If you're looking for recommendations on schools to look into, this series is a great place to start!
If you want to check out my SCHOOL SPOTLIGHT series, I'll leave a link below!

Yay! The University of Michigan! The home of Team Starkid. â€ïžâ€ïžâ€ïžâ€ïžâ€ïž
Yes! Starkid!
ugh my dream school
+K Corona đđđ
I wanted to go to this school SO BADLY ever since my sophomore year of high school. There was no way my grades in high school were going to get me in. I was INCREDIBLY average. I was invited to audition for U of M after my second year of community college and had the worst audition of my life. I know there is no benefit in regret, but I still find myself wondering what WOULD have happened if I got my BFA from Michigan instead of the plan, like, W school I went to. Pro tip from someone one year out of college: donât get invested or obsessed. If itâs your dream school, awesome. But there are a million schools. Pick many dream schools. Not âbackupsâ but other dream schools.
Out of curiosity, where did you end up going?
I've been wanting this since 4th grade
Jonie Gregger me since 5th and now Iâm attending in fall :)
"People actually come see the shows"
"No Way!"
lmao. This is the world that actors live in. lmaoooooo
GO BLUE!! Ann Arbor is an incredible town. Even if you can't get into the university, it is definitely worth visiting for the music, theatre, and any sports event, specifically football and hockey! I actually have seen Ryan in a show at my alma mater! I hope he has a huge career; he's incredibly talented
UM, WE DON'T EXCEPT SPORTS HERE IN THE THEATRE THURSDAY FAM

I'm so glad you did this! U of M is twenty minutes away from me and I was planning on studying Musical Theatre, but didn't know where to go! Also my mom works for them, so it's even better!
Love the "pop ups" from All My Sons and Crucible....looks like you two had fun!
+Devon Rosenheim absolutely!! Such a great conversation! Hope you're doing well! đ
This is so weird for me because I'm one of your viewers (for around a year now) and met Ryan in Poland this summer
Thank you so much for this series, Kathrine! I know I'm only a freshman, but I go to a high school of the Arts where I major in musical theatre, so they want us to start researching BFA programs as soon as possible and this series has helped me learn so much about all of these options open to me!
+Sabrina Mangonexo yay!! Glad you like it đŠđ
This was the video that made me realize that I wanted to be a Michigan musical theatre major... and this fall I will be!! Thank you!!
OH MY GOODNESS I'm so glad I found this channel this is exactly what I needed yay
+allison.bway omg yay!! đŠ welcome to the #TheatreThursdayFam đđđ
I completely love this section!!â€ïž Can you do one episode with an AMDA student?
I was wondering...is knowing how to dance critical for musical theatre...I mean I have rhythm and I can learn dances but I have never taken tons of dance classes.
So I once was lucky enough to get to do a little Q and A with a broadway actor, ( in a group setting not just one on one ) and a person asked a similar question. His answer was acting should be first priority, voice second, and dancing last. Not to say dancing isn't important, but a lot of big roles usually ( in my personal experience ) have a ton of dancing. but, if you end up doing broadway, they expect you to pick up dance SUPER quickly, so if you know dance is not your forte, then I would suggest working on it a little bit. I am the exact same way! Hope that helps đ
Oops i said have a ton of dancing and meant don't have a ton of dancing đ
Hey thanks
Bethanie Dodd would u recommend a type of dance class to start with
Tap or an actual musical theatre dance class
Godspellâ€ïžâ€ïžWe are hopefully doing that this year for my high school musical theatre class. I'm so excited!

hey katherine! i just found your channel and have gained a lot of great advice from your videos! i'm performing in Pippin starting this thursday and yesterday at our tech rehearsal i started to feel a little under the weather. i was wondering if you have any tips on performing with a cold/allergy symptoms. thank you!
+Anna Schmied hey love! Welcome to the #TheatreThursdayFam đđđ I'm going to make a full vid on this soon, but the basics: water, rest, medication (if application), vocal rest, steaming, vitamin supplements, tea, vitamin c, wash your hands, keep your throat warm.
Feel better!!
Katherine Steele thank you so much!!!
Could you maybe do a video on college audition monologues?
Can you please please please do a video on summer programs before college for musical theater or theater in general or just the arts? Have you done any summer arts programs? Has Ryan done any summer programs that he would recommend?
+Abigail Levy Ryan did Mpulse, we talked a bit about it in the vid đđ and here's the summer program/pre-college program vid: czcams.com/video/KgCxZMGC8kg/video.html
I know you've done videos on auditioning and everything for a normal college but would you ever do that for performing arts schools (AMDA, etc)?
+Sam Volpe Hey there!! đŠđ I just looked up the audition requirements for AMDA and they're the same as most colleges--so all of the advice is the same đ here's a full playlist on my college/conservatory/educational audition process: czcams.com/play/PLQT9aHBtN_y-XuDqpU1Y81EJQYleRHvmw.html
Could you make a video or two about some southern schools?
Can someone tell me the name of the playwright who wrote War? I tried to look it up I cannot find it!
+Lilly B Lars Norén
Okay. I have a question. I'm in the show Oliver!, (playing The Artful Dodger) and I have to laugh onstage. I can't figure out how to do it realistically. Any advice?
+Ryan Boos this is gonna sounds weird, but this is what I always do--make an inside joke with yourself about the thing you're supposed to laugh at, that way you actually laugh at it!!
Does anyone know what a good audition song would be for Susan in Big? I'm auditioning in June. Was thinking of maybe 'god help the outcasts', 'she used to be mine', or 'for Good from wicked' any other suggestions
+SparkleyBroadway hey love! đ check this out czcams.com/video/Xx2kefqKZxM/video.html break a leg!!
Where does she get those broadway posters that are hanging on the wall?
I was wondering if Ryan knows any information on whether or not transfer students are common in the acting and mt schools?
+Madison Davis you can usually find transfer info/statistics online or via email đ
Okay red alert. I lost my voice almost completely and my production of Annie goes on in 3 days..... Tmrw is dress. Any magical tips to save my voice?đŹđŹ I also have a bunch of solos, and I'm only mic'ed for 1
+Daisy Girls Sleep, rest, water, tea, don't talk loudly (or at all, if you can). If it's medically induced, see a doctor. Feel better! â€
Could you do a university of Oklahoma video?
Hey Katherine (or anyone in the comments section)! My high school theater department isn't very good (show get cancelled, rehearsals are a mess, people don't show up to watch, etc.) and I was wondering what advice you would have in dealing with a department with such issues. I love theatre and I still want to do it but I don't know how to handle the situation or what I could even do. Help!
+annabethbookfan hey love!! I'm really sorry to hear that đ first off, I'd recommend finding other theatre companies in your area and perform with them đ if the shows are getting shut down due to poor management, I'd recommend talking to a principal or superintendent. If it's due to the kids not taking it seriously, there's not much you can do. So def look for other places to perform!! â€đ
i know this vid came out three years ago and im just watching it now but hi ryan rosenheim i just got passed down an ahs drama club senior will and you're in the lineage
Hi Catherine! I also live in Michigan and Iâm looking for an acting class, do you know any good acting classes around detroit?
I also think the idea of MTers looking down on Actors is strange! Don't they watch movies? Do they think Sutton Foster looks down on Viola Davis? Of course not, they're just different types of entertainers, both with the same goal in mind!
+Wynnie M right? I loved that Ryan brought this up!!
Is there a part 2?
Why does this make me feel that much more closer to Katherin just because I live in Michigan đđđ
will you see anastasia musical? if so, when? im excited to hear your thoughts! :D
+Ervin Casiguran I want to!! Next time I'm in New York!!
I heard you must play piano when you audition for university of michigan? Is that true?
Was there ever a part 2 for this? đ„
Great interview! I was wondering if anyone knew of a summer camp or workshop for musical theatre this year. I've been trying to find but couldn't find any :)
+Michaela Alcordo depends if you want a pre-college program, or a 'summer camp'. Also, depends if you want to stay local or travel đđ
Ohh okay! I think a summer camp will be fun and I'd like to stay in cali for it haha!
+Michaela Alcordo then I'd recommend asking around locally!! Also, try asking for a local recommendation on facebook!
Katherine Steele okay! Thank you Kat! :D
as someone who lives in Ann Arbor my whole life I can state that every one who lives there whoâs not a student can tell who is/hates every out of town student
(im really late to comment but starkid tho)
Wait. Is this the guy from the bedtime stories videos?
+Korey Grecek yes!!! đđ
Hey, pleaaaase find someone whoÂŽs attending to AMDA iÂŽd love you forever.
What happened to the video you did about Syracuse?
Lexie Smychynsky yeah Iâm trying to find that one too...
What do you mean Michigan has no beachs? The Great Lakes?
+SarahSmiles912 haha, I think he meant like the beaches back home đ we grew up 10 minutes from Malibu, Ca
I'm just teasing. Sorry I'm a Michigander born and raised and when we go to the beach we mean the lakes
I just realized that I probably look like a creep cus I I comment on like half your videosđ đ
+Gee wiz It's me not at all!! I love it!! đ
Aww thanks
I'm new but are you looking into theatre as a career.
I'm a television and film student in college, but I do theatre professionally!
Katherine Steele ohhh okay wow, how do you manage that!
what school do you go to?
+Dharma jewel hey there! đŠđ you can hear more about where I go to school here: czcams.com/video/cM5-BTnRM2E/video.html
'It's new to us and there's seasons' lmao yeah in California there are legit no seasons it stays from 60-80 degrees all year round with no snow
+Charlotte Connelly haha, yep! Our area is closer to 70-90 degrees đđđ
Actually, California gets tons of snow in the Sierra Mountains and, I believe, those areas would have 4 seasons.
I live iN MICHIGAN
+Midnight Emma đđđ»â€
Need help.need to find an audition song for Kurt in heathers
+Christian Mattes ooh, fun! Here ya go: czcams.com/video/Xx2kefqKZxM/video.html break a leg!

I've literally wanted to go to this University since 7th grade. I apply later this year and I'm nervous.
+Crystal Suministrado break a leg!! â€â€
Did you get in???
Crystal Suministrado ahh! iâm in seventh grade and the other day i saw the 2019 and 2020 class of seniors perform and i loved it.
Anyone knows musical theatre or performing arts movies or tv shows???
There's a fun documentary about the broadway revival of Annie called "ANNIE: it's a hard knock life from script to stage"! The kids are so cute. The full documentary is on CZcams, if you search it!
+Leonor Arriaga tons of great ballet documentaries on Netflix!! I'd also really recommend Submissions Only (which was a webseries)
thanks lv u!!!!
thanks!!!
Interlochen Arts Camp. Look into it via youtube.
He made a Californians joke omg hahaha
+Patrice Sibilleau YES!!! We love that sketch đđ
Question: WHY ARE ALL THE GOOD PERFORMERS OUT OF UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN!!!
Yeah itâs probably one of the most competitive programs in the country.
To even be considered for the program you need to be academically accepted, which is extremely difficult. They have an acceptance rate of 26% which basically means you need to have killer sat/act scores and a near perfect GPA.
Then if you pass that you get to audition and out of the auditions they accept about 1-2% of applicants
So basically you need to be incredibly talented and a geniusđ
really surprised that he did a monologue from goodbye Charles? I was told never do that show because itâs not well known and itâs overdone?
when you want to go to u of m but ur family has a legacy at state *sigh*
GO BLUE!
+Jessica Borin đđđ
