  • Jagdish Patel, 35, his wife, Vaishali, 33, their daughter Vihanga, 12, and son Dharmik, 3 had all left Dingucha, a small village of 3,000 people in the state of Gujarat. They left the village in the second week of January and flew to Canada. Their aim was to enter the USA illegally as they were not getting visas. However, in a shocking incident, the entire family froze to death at the USA-Canada border. The news shocked the world. Let me tell you what happened. The family landed in Emmerson, Manitoba in Cannada.
They paid money to smugglers to help them cross the border to Cannada. On 19th January 2022, the smugglers dropped them and another group of Gujarati people some distance away from the border. Not a single person knew to speak English. The smugglers gave everyone new winter coats with fur-trimmed hoods, gloves, ski masks and insulated rubber boots, all of it black. They told the group of Gujarati people to start walking towards the border and once they reached the border another smuggler would pick them up and help them enter the USA.
The temperature was around -35C. There was a strong wind and heavy snow. They had started walking at around 9:30 pm. It was fully dark. Somewhere along the route, the family of 4 got separated from the group. The remaining group of people continued walking for 11 hours and had entered the USA border but they were caught by the U.S. Border Patrol officers. However, the family of 4 were then found by the Canadian authorities. They were all frozen to death. The Canadian authorities then informed the Indian government who informed their family in their village. You all may think the family was poor and wanted to go to the USA for a better life. They were from a large and supportive family with some assets. The father Jagdish Patel worked as a teacher and owned farmland. An online prayer service for the Patel family was held by about 250 people from Gujarat who are living in Canada. It was organised by Hemant Shah in Winnipeg. He said, “What has happened is shocking. We could not believe it. With the weather now in Winnipeg, we don’t dare go out. Even thinking about the pain they might have experienced in freezing cold temperatures gives us goosebumps.” The USA & Canadian authorities are now investigating the matter and suspect that there could be a huge smuggling racket to help people enter the USA illegally.

As a Canadian I'm a little biased, but why would you leave Canada for the US? I feel like Canada would have been the better life. Since you were allowed to be there legally why would you try to sneak into another country you weren't allowed to be in? Especially since if you got caught not only would you be deported from the US, but likely wouldn't be allowed to even return to Canada. Really poor decision on the parents part. Even if you were going to try to enter illegally why the hell would you do it in the middle of the night during a blizzard?

I feel sorry for the children who had these people for parents. Even if they would have reached the US, illegal immigrants cannot live a peaceful life because they are on the police blacklist. Also, why do Indians in India think US is paradise?? If you have a good life in India, there is no sense in leaving your country, family, friends, customs, traditions etc. etc. In two generations your children and grandchildren will have absolutely no connection to India. The family ties, language, traditions ....all links to the motherland are lost. Many children in Canada / US etc. only know their grandparents migrated from India. They look at India as a far away country that is a foreign land.

I mean, our happiness index is higher, we have free healthcare, less crime, less gun deaths, longer lifespan, and no seditionist political parties (yet, although as stated above, your propogandists are doing their best). @@marblegarden8456 Dude you guys also have like 2 people there. Of course when the sample size is smaller and less diverse those statistics are going to seem better. You’re comparing Canada’s tiny population to the US which is huge and accepts immigrants from all over. You guys also have a different culture where in the US we have a unique and complicated situation with gangs amongst certain minority groups that tend to inflate crime statistics. On the grand scheme of things it looks like the US has a lot of gun violence but when you actually sit down to look at the information you’re being presented with you realize gun violence really isn’t likely unless you live in a particular area or are part of a gang. Im sure this couple wasn’t coming to the US to live in the projects of Detroit. The great thing about the US is that we essentially have it all. If you want super cold, depressing weather with deer all around you then we have that. If you want sunshine, beaches and heat we have that as well. If you want all four seasons we have that. Canada just lacks a lot overall. I will admit that I do see a lot of concerning things about Canada in the media and I of course have no idea how it actually translates to real life so I admit that there is always gonna be a disconnect and misunderstanding if you don’t live it. I get frustrated at all of the divisive media that inflates issues in the US and then people who don’t live here get this idea about who we are which couldn’t be farther from the truth.

Like it’s actually wild how much welfare we have. I was shocked to learn about some of it from my friend who works for the government. The poor are taken care of by the government in the US more than to know. The government will pay for healthcare, food, rent, etc. if you’re a poor person in America so you’re wrong

Looking at their faces I feel so heartbroken. They look like a happy and healthy family. What made them take such a risky step when they could have taken legal and safer routes? It is known that visas to us and Canada can take upto 10 years. If not for themselves they should have thought about their children. They just dragged their kids into this tragedy. If they were not sure they should have left their kids with relatives and reached there and then made arrangements for kids. Why do people have to go through such lengths and put themselves and their little ones in danger. To meet such a tragic fate 😔

I am sorry for those kids who have parents like this. If you are earning good in India you can give better quality of life. I am 100% sure this guy went to US just for NRI status. Because if you go to any country illegally you will not be able to work legally so by working like a labor how he thinks he can give better quality of life to his kids. RIP those kids.

Move to a bigger city in India. Good school and after a few yrs they themselves can go abroad. Sheer lack of ignorance.
