Gujarati family Freeze to Death at US-Canada Border

- Jagdish Patel, 35, his wife, Vaishali, 33, their daughter Vihanga, 12, and son Dharmik, 3 had all left Dingucha, a small village of 3,000 people in the state of Gujarat. They left the village in the second week of January and flew to Canada. Their aim was to enter the USA illegally as they were not getting visas. However, in a shocking incident, the entire family froze to death at the USA-Canada border. The news shocked the world. Let me tell you what happened. The family landed in Emmerson, Manitoba in Cannada.
They paid money to smugglers to help them cross the border to Cannada. On 19th January 2022, the smugglers dropped them and another group of Gujarati people some distance away from the border. Not a single person knew to speak English. The smugglers gave everyone new winter coats with fur-trimmed hoods, gloves, ski masks and insulated rubber boots, all of it black. They told the group of Gujarati people to start walking towards the border and once they reached the border another smuggler would pick them up and help them enter the USA.
The temperature was around -35C. There was a strong wind and heavy snow. They had started walking at around 9:30 pm. It was fully dark. Somewhere along the route, the family of 4 got separated from the group. The remaining group of people continued walking for 11 hours and had entered the USA border but they were caught by the U.S. Border Patrol officers. However, the family of 4 were then found by the Canadian authorities. They were all frozen to death. The Canadian authorities then informed the Indian government who informed their family in their village. You all may think the family was poor and wanted to go to the USA for a better life. They were from a large and supportive family with some assets. The father Jagdish Patel worked as a teacher and owned farmland. An online prayer service for the Patel family was held by about 250 people from Gujarat who are living in Canada. It was organised by Hemant Shah in Winnipeg. He said, “What has happened is shocking. We could not believe it. With the weather now in Winnipeg, we don’t dare go out. Even thinking about the pain they might have experienced in freezing cold temperatures gives us goosebumps.” The USA & Canadian authorities are now investigating the matter and suspect that there could be a huge smuggling racket to help people enter the USA illegally.

I feel sorry for the kids .. innocent kids lost their lives 😔😭 no words for the parents 🤬
As a Canadian I'm a little biased, but why would you leave Canada for the US? I feel like Canada would have been the better life. Since you were allowed to be there legally why would you try to sneak into another country you weren't allowed to be in? Especially since if you got caught not only would you be deported from the US, but likely wouldn't be allowed to even return to Canada. Really poor decision on the parents part. Even if you were going to try to enter illegally why the hell would you do it in the middle of the night during a blizzard?
Y keave your country?
If you don’t appreciate what you get ,this is what happens
My guess is either they may have had family connections in the U.S., or else the parents believed all the crap about how great life in America is from media images.
I think even in Canada they were illegal. I mean they must be on a tourist or visiting visa, which was a temporary for them as their target destination was definitely US.
.greed and social status aspirations to show off amongst fellow Indians back home ...false belief based on media and social upbringing that usa offers better life....it's just a perception.
I feel very sorry to those innocent kids who were scapegoated to the stupid act of parents.
True and any patel community ruin the mentality of their own people
Agree
I agree
Tottaly agree
Stupid parents got their kids killed, I'm so pissed.
Hate to say but you're right
This ripped out my heart! This is the first time I have seen what this family looked like. What an unfortunate tragedy. The only comfort we all have, is that they all went to heaven together.
They should have settled in Canada. I can imagine how the kids have struggled and shivering and frozen to death! So heartbreaking!
Not sure why people think that USA will give a better life. There are many Indians in the USA who do odd jobs and living there for the sake of. Please do remember that not everyone in the USA are rich and happy like any other country. Please love yourself and the country where you live. Don't be so desperate to move to the USA !!!
Exactly.

Life is beautifull, when you keep it simple
Very true....all these imaginations of being rich are all lie
👌👍
I am sorry to say most of the Gujaratis specially Patels they feel that their life gets settled if they go there. Very Sad. I hope it is an eye opener for everybody.
Yes agree
Not only that but many Punjabis and Gujuz Marry siblings to become Legal if one person is here legally then it goes on and on :(
I feel sorry for the children who had these people for parents. Even if they would have reached the US, illegal immigrants cannot live a peaceful life because they are on the police blacklist. Also, why do Indians in India think US is paradise?? If you have a good life in India, there is no sense in leaving your country, family, friends, customs, traditions etc. etc. In two generations your children and grandchildren will have absolutely no connection to India. The family ties, language, traditions ....all links to the motherland are lost. Many children in Canada / US etc. only know their grandparents migrated from India. They look at India as a far away country that is a foreign land.
Each year thousands of people risk their life and limbs to get to a foreign land to escape poverty back home. One can find decent work in our own country.Dollars and euros come at a price!!
I used to think it's a paradise but long back I came to know that every country is like that. US is practically India but with a difference in looks and disguised appearances of atrocities.
My sister left canada to come back to India ,she says I love india as we have so many festivals people everything is so happening in india ,she felt bored there she just was there as her husband worked in canada and now both of them are back as they love india so much

This is such a senseless tragedy. I feel so awful for this family, their unrealized dreams and what they must have experienced. I imagine it was a situation where they felt this was their fleeting chance to cross, but were hesitant, and ultimately came to regret their choice. Canada has more to offer than the USA also, everything about this is sad... Canada wishes you had stayed!
YOu guys are right!! They should be able to have a good life in Canada!!
Canada doesn’t have more to offer. Deers, snow, small towns, and strict laws aren’t more to offer
@@sweetzs100 Strict laws? Ok, you must be one of these people that are being manipulated by the propaganda coming out of the US conservative echo chamber. I mean, our happiness index is higher, we have free healthcare, less crime, less gun deaths, longer lifespan, and no seditionist political parties (yet, although as stated above, your propogandists are doing their best). Does America not have deer and small towns anymore? If I were an “average” or “poor” person, I would be much better off in Canada. Wealthier people can make a good living in most places.
@@marblegarden8456 Dude you guys also have like 2 people there. Of course when the sample size is smaller and less diverse those statistics are going to seem better. You’re comparing Canada’s tiny population to the US which is huge and accepts immigrants from all over. You guys also have a different culture where in the US we have a unique and complicated situation with gangs amongst certain minority groups that tend to inflate crime statistics. On the grand scheme of things it looks like the US has a lot of gun violence but when you actually sit down to look at the information you’re being presented with you realize gun violence really isn’t likely unless you live in a particular area or are part of a gang. Im sure this couple wasn’t coming to the US to live in the projects of Detroit. The great thing about the US is that we essentially have it all. If you want super cold, depressing weather with deer all around you then we have that. If you want sunshine, beaches and heat we have that as well. If you want all four seasons we have that. Canada just lacks a lot overall. I will admit that I do see a lot of concerning things about Canada in the media and I of course have no idea how it actually translates to real life so I admit that there is always gonna be a disconnect and misunderstanding if you don’t live it. I get frustrated at all of the divisive media that inflates issues in the US and then people who don’t live here get this idea about who we are which couldn’t be farther from the truth.
@@marblegarden8456 Also people don’t realize how much welfare this country has. I never realized until I met my friend who works for the government. The US government literally houses immigrants, provides healthcare, an income etc. if you are poor in the US there are so many services and programs that essentially take care of you. Like it’s actually wild how much welfare we have. I was shocked to learn about some of it from my friend who works for the government. The poor are taken care of by the government in the US more than to know. The government will pay for healthcare, food, rent, etc. if you’re a poor person in America so you’re wrong
I feel like they made the wrong choice to cross the US border from Canada. If these people can't get their visas, they should still be able to have a good life in Canada. A Bhatia, you are absolutely right. Why should they rely on the US for a better future?

This is very very heartbreaking . Life is very valuable .
There's a malayalam film " Comrade in America " which in detail explains the extent of human trafficking and illegal border crossing to US via Mexico ( Not via Canada) .
With Canada being risky most people take the Mexican route but often get caught by Border Security Agency. This case was quite unfortunate because they had hopes of building a better life and it all went in vain.

I have seen this urge of being AMERICAN in Gujarat. Being from most prosperous state in india, I do not understand why is this NRI status is so cool? Believe me I stayed in other countries for job. But I Truely believe india is most suited place for us.

@@RickyKG That is so true. I live in Canada and I do see Indians crave for validation and acceptance here to fit in their society . I agree with each and every point that you just said
Well said man, but the present communal situation, economic performance of India, lack of jobs has made into something closer to Afghanistan, Syria and all. No one in todays India can have a conversation without religion, region, majority, minority.. So it is better to leave..
I totally disagree with you. There will always be communal tension in all part of world till there is multiple ideologies.

I belong to Manitoba and I know how cold this province is! When I heard this sad news it was a really big thunderstorm that arrived at that duration. It is very difficult to stay for 5 minutes outside. And they walked 11 hours. OMG ! 😲
I wonder how did they reach Canada ? The family wanted better life so wasn’t Canada a good country for better life ? I mean Jagdish was a teacher still he took such a crazy senseless decision in his life and even his wife supported his decision ! What kind of family it was ??? ? But I feel sorry for kids !
They had a visitor viza.
Sad for the family. Just wondering why USA? Why they didn't settle in Canada?
They were middle-class in their country. Relatively comfortable. They were not used to this sort of life. Especially the kids.
Looking at their faces I feel so heartbroken. They look like a happy and healthy family. What made them take such a risky step when they could have taken legal and safer routes? It is known that visas to us and Canada can take upto 10 years. If not for themselves they should have thought about their children. They just dragged their kids into this tragedy. If they were not sure they should have left their kids with relatives and reached there and then made arrangements for kids. Why do people have to go through such lengths and put themselves and their little ones in danger. To meet such a tragic fate 😔
So sad to hear this. My sympathies
I am really really sorry to say this. But this Gujrati people have to stop this stupidity. I dont know why they feel its cool to have NRI status. This is far beyond stupidity. I am sorry for those kids who have parents like this. If you are earning good in India you can give better quality of life. I am 100% sure this guy went to US just for NRI status. Because if you go to any country illegally you will not be able to work legally so by working like a labor how he thinks he can give better quality of life to his kids. RIP those kids.
I know what was he thinking of doing there. How was he going to support his family there? Instead just use the money spent on all this to provide good education to kids. Simple. Move to a bigger city in India. Good school and after a few yrs they themselves can go abroad. Sheer lack of ignorance.
Canada would’ve welcomed them to stay permanently because they have small children. After living in Canada for 3 years they all will become Canadian citizens. After becoming Canadian citizens they could’ve entered the USA legally as Canadian citizens.
Yes dear they made wrong choice.
I read that they arrived in Canada on tourist visas. They could've simply overstayed with no penalty?
@@Raja1938 you can overstay without penalty. All you have to do is apply for permanent residency within Canada. There is a law that nobody can be removed from the country once they are inside. Canada does not physically remove illegal immigrants.
They could settle in canada very easily as USA will never give them legal status
I don't know why people want to go to the US from Canada. I was born and raised in cold northern Canada but there's no way I would ever move to the US with all its problems
The only recent reason I know was truckers who didn’t want to get the vaccine mandates. Many of our trucking companies here don’t require vaccines. Transporting drugs and or invading the country after committing crimes are reasons that happened in the past.
The US is much better but Canada is comfortable. Some people want more and have bigger dreams. When you think beyond your own perspective of being happy with a simple life then it shouldn’t be hard to understand. Also, Canada has the same problems as the US.
The world isn't awash with media fantasy images from Canada. It is with American media, and it's what fuels the idiotic fantasies of many migrants.
@@sweetzs100 You think living in 40 below winters is comfortable?

From there they had to make an 8 hour trek across the border but the temperature was -35 and it took them 11 hours before they all collapsed and lost their life.
