As a Canadian, I miss the days when we could simply drive down, no passport needed, usually getting waved through and the only major issues were wether we declared all our purchases from America for duty taxes. It seems like those days are long gone.

My grandparents took us to Canada as children. We answered some questions, drove across, and spent the day shopping and eating at restaurants. Loved it. We did get far enough NORTH that we ran off the englsh speaking part into french. As none of us spoke french; we had to turn around and head back. Loved it, and told myself to learn a bit of French to visit in the future. I miss that. In So Cal I used to go to Mexico regularly, for the same reasons, but it has become quite contentious there, and it is nearly impossible just to run over there for shopping. (mexican border is 30 min from my home) Come on, people, we are neighbors. We should be able to visit without being prison-processed to cross the border.

People had much to say about the incident - the family had travelled far and fell into hands of criminals multiple times during the process but they had come too far and had to try with nothing left to lose. I cannot imagine being in the same position in life. Those people died horrifically - no one on this earth deserves that. Still - we wait for our governments to stop what is happening in both countries. Isn't the New York City mayor using tax dollars to bus migrants to Roxham so they can cross into Canada. I could be wrong but I feel that more are crossing into Canada currently than the opposite. I'd also suspect that many that were sent from Texas to NYC that are now entering Quebec are Haitian since both speak French. Being Canadian I don't have a huge issue with people seeking asylum (I mean Haiti is a nightmare right now so I really can't blame people for fleeing), but I also don't think another country should be busing them here as it overwhelms the services in Quebec just as NYC didn't appreciate their southern states doing that to them. If their intentions are to seek asylum in Canada then NYC can support them through the proper channels, not buying them a bus ticket and dropping them off at the border. At the end of the day these are people too and we have to work together to support them, and remember not everyone is as fortunate to be born in a great stable country as many Canadians and Americans are..

As it is the US side has a guard ( just 1) after hours. As to border and custom patrol they are on the roads patrolling at night but there aren't enough. I had a Border patrol agent stop and talk to a group of people waiting at 5am for a commuter bus in a small rural town in northern Franklin county in -22 below temps. He wanted to know who we were, where we were from and are we citizens. He went on to say a group of illegal crossers was seen crossing a field outside of town. The border is less than a mile from where we get on the commuter bus.
