Thank you for this information. These situations can change at any moment and it's good to have someone in the area that can report on it. My husband and I visited Ajijic in September this year. I had asked our driver about going to Mazamitla because I had heard about it. Our driver said, unfortunately, he could not recommend it because of the violence that was happening there at this time.

The US is averaging more than 1 mass killing per day. All innocent people directly targeted. Sorry to say, but I have no problem with gangs killing each other, it's just a shame when innocent people get caught in the crossfire. The violence in that town won't keep me from visiting.

Trying to figure out what the two gangs are fighting over other then territory. In a small village like that do they want to sell drugs, and then are their really that many druggies that live there or is it for extortion to get money from the businesses. I know extortion is rampant In Mexico. My wife and I would love to open a small business but are very concerned about this subject. We know from a very recent experience we had taking our cat to the vet in Ajijic that they were threatened to pay an extortion fee (protection). I have read several businesses closed on account of this because they got tired of dealing with it. I believe this was in Puerto Vallarta. We know of a business in Chapala who doesn’t keep a sign in front of his business and operates discreetly. I think this topic needs to be brought up more, especially if one is thinking of starting a brick and mortar business in Mexico. This may not be in all cases but something to be aware of.

Years ago in the US, city businesses would be coerced to pay protection to the mafia of the territory. Complaints caused the government to grow which increased the need for government funding. So the government seized the opportunity to replace the mafia by providing protection and collecting money for providing it in the form of permits, licensing, fees, and of course taxes on any money changing hands. Bolstered by fines, penalties, interest, and forfeitures for those perceived to fall out of compliance.
It's easy to make the argument that it's fairer because the rules and regulations are documented and apply equally to everyone. But because of discretion, bias and favoritism are inevitable. Life was never fair, and never will be.
Like the venerable Bob Dylan once crooned, "ya gotta serve somebody"!
