    Excellent performance I know each and every one of these fine kenpo practitioners some for many years. For 49 years I've been practicing American Kenpo. I feel a bit silly. I just learned that I could have learned all that in just 6 months. And of course have it mastered . Congratulations to all on a fine job.

    The style is NOT a problem. The practicioner is the the one who dictates effectiveness not the art itself. I know AKK men who are dangerous. There are many Effective forms of Kempo jitsu but they still need you. Ever heard of Dan inosanto Benny the Jet Urquidez The Iceman Chuck Liddell Steve Muhammad Michael Jai White is kyokushin Kai kempo GSP Even Bruce freaking Lee studied kempo the Bubishi of Karate do is Kempo and the Empty hand portion of Ninjutsu is Kempo jitsu so piss on the uniformed.👿👹😈💀

      If he's been doing bjj it happens all the time. Personally an instructor for Senshido was talking shit about mma fighters, so I said I'll fight your toughest student no rules. He came to my club to fight me. My coach knew the story, so even though I was still a white belt and he out weighed me by 20 pounds, I tapped him out in the first thirty seconds. By the fourth tap out he was humbled. He's a narcissistic arrogant know it all, but shut up around me from there on. He went to gauge my eyes so I used that to get double unders and and inside reaped him, then arm barred him. It's a bad ambassador for the Senshido. He should have been more humble as a teacher.

    • @ladyrohan
      @ladyrohan Před 7 lety +5

      Yes, I've seen that. One instructor told us, believe it or not, that if you want to get good at kenpo, do kenpo. If you want to get good at push-ups, do push-ups. The idea of cross training wasn't even considered. Yes, he was very good at kenpo, and he could kick your ass if he followed through when he demonstrated on you. And yes, he was fat.

    • @russelladams9147
      @russelladams9147 Před 6 lety +3

      If in my prime I had a dollar for every time a "fat" judo instructor, or otherwise martial artist, kicked my ass with seemingly endless cardio...Ever see Big Country Roy Nelson? Don't underestimate someone with that kind of power and raw strength...low body fat does NOT and has NEVER constituted superior martial skills. What you see in Hollywood/Hongkong movies is based on the value of selling a physicially appealing product.
      Granted, should these guys be watching their weight through due diligence in the kitchen, along with strength and conditioning? Certainly that would be of benefit to their health. I believe Master Ed Parker had a fondness for barbeque, and died of a heart attack based on dietary issues. But the man could rip another man's face off four or five times in the time it might take a guy like me to blink. Nuts.
      Finally, one of the masters you see above, Mr. Paul Dye, carries himself with the humility and air of a friendly office computer coder. He probably isn't going to ever whip up 50 pushups. But here's the magic of the fluid motion of Master Parker's Kenpo: the art teaches such a succinct and efficient form of body movement, that massive power (certainly pounds per square inch) from various point of origin strikes (not just a heavyweight boxer lining up a hook or straight to optimize power), but from seemingly awkward as well as various rotational movements - imagine a man-sized windmill with fists and about a thousand CC engine driving it...
      Feeling, in this art, truly is believing. Don't let a 60-yer old man's gut fool you into a concussion :)

    • @davidh4807
      @davidh4807 Před 6 lety +3

      Ed Parker was a large man himself. If you think their size would inhibit their ability to defend themselves-that would be a mistake. Some of the hardest hitting and accurate martial artists I have cross trained with are Kenpoists. This isn’t a cardio demo or mma display .... this group is legit.

    I've been teaching Kenpo for forty years and I was so embarrassed to watch this. I'm 73 and I move as fast and strong as someone in their early fifties, or younger. Watching those two dough boys struggle to perform Kenpo was shocking to see. To cover up the inadequacies, they would scream. All that screaming everyone did was not necessary. To yell at certain points, would have been enough. i met GrandMaster Parker years ago and i can not imagine him allowing something like this to take place. I love Kenpo and one should keep their bodies in shape to work Kenpo properly. Shame, shame.
    That's correct, the belt only means that you've learned the knowledge, not that you have the skill to perform it. To have and maintain the skill, one has to practice their whole life time.

    I know I am commenting on an old video, but I have to say I have been involved in Kenpo for over thirty years and many other arts, and although not shocked and keeping in mind it's a demo some of these people have some serious technical issues. The one person here kicking with the top of his foot kills me. Another note I saw a comment below about a bunch of old fat guys, I got news for you, you could square off with 50 yo guy that smokes two packs a day and drinks a twelve pack everyday and get your ass handed to you.
    Kenpo is about the science of combat and filling you bag with as many tools as possible to defend yourself and the ones you care about. Most street fighters have a few things they know works for them and Martial Artist doesn't run out of options.

    People commenting negatively on this really don't understand what they are seeing here. The movement presented is done by practitioners that obviously do their moves in their sleep. The attitude of the demos has to be casual to prevent them from killing each other. The older men are definitely higher level martial artists.

    People who say they can't take it seriously just know that it is meant as self defense primarily in a streetfight where your opponent(s) probably don't know how to fight very well. Most sets won't be used fully or in order, you may take a couple moves from different things to fit what you need to do to stop someone from attacking you.

    Always wondered whether or not the 'chit chat' among the great Chinese, Okinawan, Korean and Japanese masters was chock full of the same kind of 'trash talk' that seem to pepper so many martial arts forums. That one comment of Ed Parker's regarding Bruce Lee also gives one pause. There is much of what one sees in archival footage of interviews with Lee which is punctuated with sneer and attitude. Reviewing the evolution of so many of these styles across the past 100 years, I have come to the conclusion that the concept of replacing ego and arrogance, with humility has not yet been achieved. In reading Shoshin Nagamine Sensei's book about his life in Matsubayashi Shorin-ryu, and some of the issues he encountered, I was left with that impression. His philosophy expressed in Chapter III is very detailed, thoughtful and profound. But I don't see it reflected in much of what I read amongst 'the faithful'. There is more octagon- than dojo-mindset in these arts.

The martial arts world is full of so many frauds these days, it's nice to see there are still a few legit martial artists left. And thankfully no professional fighter would dare use these lethal techniques because the death rate among them would be so high we would not have any left to watch. And pay no mind to the you tube keyboard warriors that write in the comments section.

    p.s. : Read some other comments. It's no sin to get fat, and in schools with kickboxing sparring there are even good fighters.
    It's just that the kenpo-curriculum is very academic and typical for SD arts that don't short spar their sets.
    But it is nice to watch and fun to move this way. There is no sin in fun either.

    i did karate for a few years learning kata thinking that this is a way to practice these moves in a manner that would simulate some real life experience. a lot of those moves seem silly and ineffective. im sure my comments will spark outrage but i have had enough of instructors telling me they can block any punch i throw because they can see my aura. i think a semi pro boxer would destroy any of these conmen

      Boxers can't kick.
      It's ok to have your own opinion. These guys above have a 'similar' formula. I know the form they did in the beginning is called 'short 3.' It's a blue belt form. The first form to use strictly techniques.
      Each form has a theme behind it. Each technique has extensions. It has different situations packed in as well. These techniques are no joke.
      Sure, these guys are fat and many in this comment section find it funny or humorous, as do I.
      Ed Parker on the other hand, was HUGE. Very humble and didn't strike people as a 'I can beat you up'. His intuitive ideas caught on and obviously was a body guard for Elvis Presley.

      You're not wrong. It's American Kenpo 'karate'; the entire organization is like a cult. Don't take me wrong, there are most likely many Kenpo practitioners with the right mindset and have so become very good martial artists. But Ed Parker was, from my perspective, just a scam; and hence, the kata they perform have often very little practical meaning.
      That said, i'm not dissing kata. I believe it's an excellent way to improve your entire martial arts game (through practising the basics), but if the kata is flawed it loses all value.

It’s all BS a bunch of guys all slapping themselves for sound effects, everyone running around with a 10th degree black belt (Reserved for the original grandmaster) every schools syllabus is different some with 24 techniques some with 16 and some with 12. The most political art you’ll ever join. All static training as you stand still while the guy multiple strikes you and makes it look like he’s totally badass. They have long techniques that ina real fight you won’t have time to do. One school wanted me to take home a bunch of manuals to study. I was like I want to learn to fight not get a degree. I’d say join a good Asian art if you want stand up karate.

      Those were just techniques, they're the basics put together in a practical arrangement, and they are usually practiced with a "motionless" attacker, but in American Kenpo we do multiple drills in which the attacker comes at us as if they were actually attacking us. When we have the techniques memorized from a still standpoint before you actually put it into action, it comes more naturally, and it's easier to learn.

    • @tsan3796
      @tsan3796 Před 10 lety +2

      How did you learn to speak and spell? You learned the alphabet over time to construct words and sentences to convey meaning or understanding. American Kenpo is the study of motion which Parker broke down to teach concepts.
      Basics: punch stance etc were the alphabets of motion.
      self defense/forms are concepts taught in a sequential arrangement like words in a sentence to give it meaning.

    • @Jissenkempo
      @Jissenkempo Před 10 lety +5

      Its a learning process. Just like you learn set techniques/entries in Brazilian Jujutsu or wrestling. They're not techniques carved in stone that you MUST do EXACTLY, they're teaching/learning tools as much as they are self defense moves. Also pay attention to what the attacker is doing, its pretty obvious its an every day attacker, not a trained fighter. You don't see self defense techniques in sparring because...they're self defense techniques not sparring techniques. Not every situation starts with two guys with their guard up bouncing around like boxers. Most real violence starts verbally, with a dirty look, pushing, shoving, threats, posturing, etc. The situation itself is not as dynamic as if you were already "fighting" with the guy (which can also happen obviously), the idea is to AVOID a fight (brawl)..so this is what usually happens during that gray area after the "oh shit" button goes off (you realize it's about to get physical), and an all out 'fight' explodes. Again the idea is to explode on the guy while you have the chance, take him out fast, and go home, not giving him a chance to turn it into a contest, because he almost certainly has some kind of advantage, be it a weapon, intoxication, buddies, or at least size and strength.

    Kind of sad really. When I was a kid I took Judo, then later Tae Kwon do, and boxing. I wasn't confident and still had a fear of fighting. Especially guys that were bigger than me. I ended up going to an Ed Parker Do jo - American Kenpo. Got up to a green belt, I was more confident but still had some fear issues. I took some time off, and returned to a different EP A/Kenpo Do jo in a different city. That is where I got my brown belt. I honestly have to say though. You can not incorporate the system into real live fight scenarios. The movements are based on the assumption that your opponent will react a certain way after each strike. In the real world it doesn't work like that. You have to take in to account weight, size, speed of your opponent. Also environment, and how many attackers and so on. What I found was I incorporated all of my different skills in Judo, TKD, Boxing, and Kenpo. I would spar and fight with a flow, as if not to think about my next move but to feel it. It is really hard to explain but when you let go and just let it happen you realize it isn't the art that makes the man, but the man that makes the art. I didn't get my black belt because in reality it was useless. I overcame my main objective - fear

      Any one of the MANY Kenpo techniques will follow a specific pattern of various types of strikes and checks that are designed as a defense to a particular type of attack that is initiated by an opponent. It is a WELL KNOWN FACT within any ' reputable ' Kenpo school that an opponent MAY NOT react in a ' predictable ' manner to a strike that is delivered against them. *** Therefore, if the execution of ANY self defense technique is ' hindered ' by the opponent in such a manner as to make the Kenpo system of self defense INEFFECTIVE, the ' hindrance ' lies within the competence of the Kenpo practitioner rather than the attacker's ability TO hinder a SUCCESSFUL counter attack ! A proficient Kenpo practitioner has a whole ARSENAL of knowledge to draw from, and ANY interruption in the sequence of a particular technique would only lead to an IMMEDIATE adaptation of whatever is NEEDED to ' neutralize ' the opponent. This ABILITY to adapt is nothing more than the ability to PERCEIVE what is needed for a particular situation, and then ' accessing ' those tools that are relevant for the ' constantly evolving ' situation at hand ! Ed Parker ALWAYS conveyed this concept to his students. That is WHY you can hear Larry Tatum, Jeff Speakman, and other Kenpo instructors continually passing this concept on to anyone that THEY teach.
