It made multiple attacks at the nest. Human size equivalent would be a T-Rex trying to get in your house! Hope you'd defend it like the blue tit did ;)
I blame humans for this. The idiot who built the box. He/she should have known they have woodpeckers in their town. So simple fix is nailing a thin sheet of metal around the box so they can't pick it and get inside.
