This video is spot on. My fiancé is in this field and boy is it difficult. I haven’t seen him in two months but we talk everyday. Luckily I have my kids to keep me going and my own career which keeps me busy. But this life is not easy at all. I felt you when you said about leaving your wife because he’s gotten calls at 1,2,3, am and he would have to go. But this is a huge sacrifice and the men and also women in this field deserve their flowers 🌸

I work turnarounds/ shutdowns 8 months out of the year and manage to clear over $100k after tax and still enjoy 4 months out of the year off. I hate it but I love it. I have definitely been able to set myself and my family up for success financially

Been working at an oil refinery for 8 months now on a process unit. I'm 22 so I don't have a family or anything yet just tryin to start putting my life together but I love it. I work 4-4 2 weeks days 2 week nights 14 days a month (no including overtime days) and the schedule does suck at times but I genuinely do enjoy the job. It really depends on the person I feel like honestly. Don't wanna wake up early af or work weird hours and be at work while everybody else you know is out doing whatever, then its not the job for you. But it is a solid living and I would definitely recommend it to anyone who can get in.

@@thatguyray5753 Definitely not too bad. I have an hour drive there and back at the refinery I’m working at so I leave even earlier for traffic and what not so it winds up being 15 hour days. Still have time to do what I need to do on days off and what not though obviously. And I just worked a similar schedule recently for a turnaround we had for 2 months. It was 13 and 1s so I definitely see where you're coming from there.

Ill be honest, maybe its because I have been out of consistent work... but I miss the money from the oil industry. But at my age, I can't do 12 hour shifts, on call near chemicals, wearing steel toes and in the sun all day anymore. The money was worth it though. The savings alone funded my 5 years of unemployment from 2 years of working.

Sometimes I want to go work at the Martinez refineries because I work at a smaller one near it but I don’t make gas or plastic. It’s a food factory refinery. Currently at 27.96 and in 8 years I’ll be at 37 an hour at the age of 35 which ain’t bad because I’ll still get raises and at the age of 45 I’ll be at 47-48 an hour but the Martinez refinery starts at 47 an hour. I’m trying to switch fields to Vulcan material’s because they pay at 36-41 an hour and a closer drive. Idk if no other company hires me then I might just go to the bigger refineries but I hate the schedules. It’s either a moving schedule or rotating schedule. It would be better if they had 4 days on and 3 days off 12 hour shifts.

Too bad it sounds like the industry has got real bad. Looks like Teamsters need to fight back. We need Jimmy Hoffa back from the dead. 🤣 Jokes aside if they hired more workers on the ground they could cut hours and increase fringe benefits. They cut labor and say "but you get to work longer hours and more money", but money isn't everything. Same thing happening to my trucking and railroad friends. Not an easy life. Used to treat workers a lot better and hire more help. Used to be a solid middle class life. I hear more and more recently retired tell me, if they had to start over in the industry today they wouldn't. It's changed a lot and not all of it for the better. I have mad respect for the workers still sticking it out.

Look, these are serious, great paying career jobs and there are real protections for employee health and safety. A good fraction of your paid time is in safety and job training. Is much expected? Of course! The safety of others depends in large part on your diligence and same goes for your safety; It's a team. Really, the safety record in US Refineries and chemical plants is very good. But screw offs are not tolerated, and for good reason

@@thatguyray5753 which location at covestro? I had not previously heard of Covestro but I see they make PC among other things. We licence BPA technology - BPA is used to make PC. Bottom line is there is an OSHA reporting requirement and mandatory inveatigations, root cause analysis and training required to prevent accidents. When I worked at an operating facility we also had something called Responsible Care which obligated us to report and disclose to the community when we had any release no matter how small and as well had regular meetings open to the community to hear their concerns.
At any rate bud I hope you stay safe. Do not hesitate to voice safety concerns to the management team; it is supposed to be an open, non-hostile atmosphere for the safety of all employees and for the protection of the community. If it is truly not safe, and the safety culture is disfunctional.and corrupted, then I would say a similar paying job with your skills can be found at a company that takes safety seriously and I would encourage you to look around. It's a workers market out there! Best to you bud.
