  • Thank you for joining us on this trip report!

Yes. United absolutely knows how to do service well, especially on international flights- though I’ve encountered some of best crew members thus far in my life - on United domestic routes. Also, These days, even in United domestic first class, passengers are offered hot towel service, and of course real silverware and real glasses and dishes during the flight. Pre-departure drink service is offered in plastic, understandably so. Great video!

I've heard the 787 can alter its flap profile slightly during flight to optimise the wing for different speeds/altitudes. In that case the spoilers would also have to realign themselves slightly to maintain the wing's shape. The 787-9 & 10 also have boundary layer control on the fin (not currently active that I know of) and tailplane. Air is let into a duct and allowed to blow across the surface which improves the aerodynamics.
The A380 spoilers also reposition themselves so they maintain a constant surface with the lowered flaps.

I LOVE aviation and commercial planes in particular. I've never flew on the 787 yet. I can't wait to experience it one day! I fly domestic in America. I think that most of the times; the airlines reserve the wide-body craft for international flights? I say this because it always seems I'm assigned a 737 or an A320. I love them both. But I wanna fly on a wide-body! Even if it's an older 767. I don't care!!
I love the video. Thanks for the post.

The reason to unplug your devices from the in seat power supply system during take-off and landing are due to the most risky flight phases. There is a bigger chance when using the in seat power supply for damage, overheating or smoke development. So airlines just don’t want to take that risk during high workload phases as take-off and landing. These are the most crucial parts of a flight. Kind regards from a Dutch cabin crew member, who is flying on aircrafts with in seat power supply systems as well :)
    Btw, lovely footage!

I think the risk each airline assesses as many don’t have removing it as a SOP. Some topics are standard, such as closing tables, seats upright, etc, but cables and opening/shutting blinds depends on the airline.
Bedankt and have a nice one! Hope to fly with you soon!

Yeah, no need to be nasty to generate views. It unfortunatly does make a more popular video.
I’ll do the opposite. Those nasty comments they make or mistakes they show can have consequences to companies or staff & their families.
Aviation is beautiful and I just want to show the nice of it, even in the not-so-popular airlines. It’s really whatever attitude you have. I’m always enthusiastic and respectful to crew so I get the same back.
Regarding your job, how interesting! I’m sure you have a lot of anecdotes.
I’ve never seen the w&b being done with pen and paper by a loadmaster, I still managed to see some pilots re-calculating the CG with pen and paper.
I guess the DC-10 was tail heavy and the B747 nose heavy?

I am no 787 engineer but i believe they do not sit flush before start up is because of the lack of hydraulic pressure in the system, once they get pressure they become flush.

  • @collinparsons3363
    @collinparsons3363 Před rokem

The US carriers don't have the best reputation, but UA seems to have a competitive long-haul product in all classes. The seat looks pretty typical for long haul economy, the IFE is top notch, and it seemed like you got two full meals, plus snacks and drinks. The food quality also looked good for economy. Overall, much better than their domestic product, which I've flown many times. Note that they are improving that as well. The next time I go to Europe, I'll definitely fly with United.
I like how you showed the various quirks of the 787. It was interesting to see how the flaperon works during different phases of the flight, including to keep the plane steady during turbulence. I didn't know it could do that, but I guess it works a lot like stabilizers on a ship.
As for the foggy window, apparently that's a problem with the 787s, if the windows are set to their darkest setting for long periods of time. I wonder if it would have gotten better after takeoff. I always pick the window seat for the views, so being able to see out is very important to me. I like how with the 787, it's possible to partially dim the window so one can still see out, but not disturb seatmates who might be trying to sleep. I could see how it would be annoying if the crew locked out the windows on the darkest setting. They're not supposed to do that on United, but from what I've heard, sometimes it still happens. I'm fine with dimming all the windows after meal service, but not locking them, so those who want to undim can do so.
Lastly, from my experience, US carriers only make you unplug your devices for takeoff and landing if you're in an exit row. This is so in the unlikely event of an evacuation, no one is tripping over cords. In all other rows, you can keep them plugged in from gate to gate. It might be different with foreign carriers though.

5:18 I remember that UNITED safety demonstration video. They came up with a great concept showing the airplane safety features from different parts of the world, all to the music by great American composer George Gershwin in the background
However iI was surprised to see the final scene of the safety video set in China
United is a US carrier. Their hubs are in NewYork, Washington, Chicago and SanFrancisco
It would make more sense to finish the safety video from one of these cities instead since all of these cities have iconic landmarks which could’ve been shown in the video
    Just saying...

Great video, you do a great job with them. I would have done the same and switched seats. I flew business class from TPA via ATL to Venice, and same on way back. If I could know if coach is reasonably not too full, I wouldn't need to fly business. I just don't like being crowded on a full flight. Tampa airpirt has added non stop to Frankfurt on Eurowings. What do you know about that airline? Are they any good? I think it is a subsidiary of Lufthansa. Once again, thanks for the videos

    • @TheLayoverAviation
      @TheLayoverAviation  Před 2 lety

I agree. Economy is fine when it’s empty, unless someone pays you the ticket😄. I also don’t like crowds, specially not the ones on certain famous routes (let’s say rough Europeans to certain destinations).
I’ve flown Eurowings from Punta Cana to Cologne some years ago, Discover is a refreshed brand. I guess the concept is the same: nothing free unless you pay. Long haul low cost. It was allright, I knew what I paid for so no surprises. Have to fly that one again!

Love it another trip report by you - I am so glad the United did not lock the window blinds I am really glad .Some cabin crews airlines darken the cabin and expect you to sleep on a daytime flight while they take a nap .One of my main problems with Boeing 787 passenger are electronic window design shades all control with the cabin crew .

I know right? I came fresh from a night sleep and would feel annoyed to be put back to bed. But this time it was not the case!
I have another video of a United B767-400 but the cabin was pitch black dark for almost 7 hours so I barely have any footage, won’t be able to publish anything.
Too bad those electric shades are coming to Airbus too..

It’s mostly United in my experience.
I flew with United 3 days ago and boy, never heard so many announcements in my entire life. And in 3 languages! And automatic mixed with voice🤪
Turkish uses it a lot too, right, but I guess it’s easier for others to understand. The Turkish accent is quite strong (no insults intended)

Charging devices allowed or not depend on company safety procedures. If not allowed to use USB charging devices is to avoid blockage or obstruction of the passenger evacuation during an emergency. aisle and exit area must be clear during takeoff and landing, tray tables , cables should be collected… prior to prepare for quick evaluation. Thanks nice video 👍.

Hey imni, thanks for your comment.
I of course suspect it’s due to safety, I just don’t understand why it only applies to some airlines and not others.
Last month I was woken up from my sleep as we were landing and my phone was charging. Countless other airlines don’t care. Wish there were more consistent rules, just like with seat belts, tables, exit areas etc

I would tend to agree with you, but I fly out of a United hub. Of course delta is great, but there’s just something about United , overall- from the planes, all the improvements they’ve made, the FF program, all of it comes together to make what I think is the “best”. American isn’t in the running. Of course we all know Delta is quite solid in general.
